Chapter 4: The Marriage He Designed

I walked out of the basement before anyone could stop me.

I needed air.

I needed distance.

I needed five minutes where nobody was lying to me.

But Daniel followed.

“Emma, wait.””

I turned around.

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

The rain poured between us.

For a moment, we stood in the driveway like strangers.

Maybe we had always been strangers.

“How long?””

Daniel looked down.

“How long what?””

“How long did you know about me before we met?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“Years?””

He whispered:

“Two years.””

I felt my chest tighten.

Two years.

He knew my name.

My habits.

My life.

Before I ever knew his.

“Why?””

His face changed.

Regret.

Fear.

Shame.

“My mother thought…”

I interrupted.

“Your mother?””

He closed his eyes.

“She believed you were the only person who could fix what happened.””

I stared at him.

“Fix what?””

Before he could answer, Sarah walked outside.

“She means me.””

Daniel looked angry.

“Sarah, stop.””

“No.””

Sarah looked at me.

“Eight years ago, I was engaged to Daniel.””

I froze.

The rain felt colder.

“He told me he loved me,” she continued.

“Then one day, he disappeared.””

Daniel’s voice broke.

“Sarah.””

“You left me with nothing.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Why?””

He had no answer.

Sarah continued.

“Because Evelyn found out I couldn’t give her the future she wanted.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“What?””

Sarah looked at the house.

“Evelyn wanted grandchildren. A perfect family. A perfect image.””

I swallowed.

“And me?””

Sarah’s eyes filled with sadness.

“You were chosen because you fit the image.””

I felt sick.

Every memory changed.

Our first date.

Our first kiss.

Our wedding.

Was any of it real?

Daniel stepped closer.

“Emma, I did love you.””

I looked at him.

“I don’t know what was real anymore.””

He reached toward me.

I stepped back.

“You studied me.””

His face fell.

“I was trying to…”

“What?””

He had no answer.

Because there was no excuse.

A person who secretly learns everything about you isn’t protecting you.

They’re controlling you.

Sarah handed me a small envelope.

“Your husband’s mother kept everything.””

I stared at it.

“What is this?””

“Proof.””

My fingers trembled as I opened it.

Inside were documents.

The first page had my name.

My full name.

And beneath it:

“Subject approved.””

I stopped breathing.

Subject.

Not wife.

Not partner.

Subject.

I looked at Daniel.

“Was I an experiment?””

“No.””

“Then why does this exist?””

He looked broken.

But I couldn’t feel sorry for him.

Not anymore.

I flipped through the papers.

There were notes.

My personality.

My family background.

My financial situation.

Even details about my childhood.

Someone had turned my life into a file.

Then I saw one sentence that made my blood run cold.

“Final objective: secure ownership transfer after emotional dependency is established.””

I looked up.

“Ownership transfer?””

Nobody spoke.

Then my phone rang.

The same unknown number.

Sarah looked at me.

“Answer it.””

I did.

A man’s voice spoke this time.

“Emma, you need to leave immediately.””

“Who are you?””

“Someone who tried to warn you before.””

“What is happening?””

A pause.

Then:

“Your husband didn’t marry you for love.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Why?””

The man whispered:

“Because he married you for what your father left behind.””

My blood froze.

My father.

A man Daniel barely mentioned.

A man who died before our wedding.

“What did my father leave?””

The line went silent.

Then the man said:

“Ask Daniel why his mother has been trying to get access to your inheritance since the day you met.””

The call ended.

I slowly lowered the phone.

May you like

Daniel’s face had gone pale.

And that told me the stranger was telling the truth.
