Chapter 3: The Woman in the Photograph

I couldn’t breathe.

The basement felt smaller with every passing second.

The walls seemed to move closer.

My flashlight shook in my hand as I stared at the photograph.

Daniel.

Young.

Smiling.

His arm around a woman I had never seen before.

She looked happy.

Like someone who believed she was loved.

The date beneath the picture made my stomach twist.

Three years before our first meeting.

Three years before Daniel told me I was the first woman he ever truly loved.

I turned slowly.

“Who is she?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel stood halfway down the stairs.

His face had lost all color.

Evelyn remained at the top.

Silent.

I picked up the photograph.

“Who is she, Daniel?””

He looked away.

That hurt more than any confession.

Because guilt looked exactly like that.

“Emma…”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“Don’t say my name like that. Not now.””

I held up the picture.

“You told me you had never been serious before me.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

“Eventually.””

I laughed.

A broken sound.

“Eventually?””

I looked around the basement.

The walls were covered with evidence that this wasn’t a secret.

This was a life.

A hidden life.

“What is this place?””

Evelyn finally spoke.

“Leave.””

I turned toward her.

“Why are there pictures of me?””

Her silence answered.

I walked closer to the wall.

There were photos from our wedding.

Photos from vacations.

Photos from restaurants.

Photos taken from far away.

Photos I never remembered posing for.

Someone had been watching me.

Following me.

Recording my life.

My stomach turned.

“Daniel.””

He looked at the floor.

“Did you know?””

A long pause.

“Yes.””

The word destroyed something inside me.

Not because he admitted it.

Because he admitted it so easily.

I stepped back.

“You knew your mother was collecting pictures of me?””

“She was just trying to understand you.””

“Understand me?””

I pointed at the wall.

“This isn’t understanding.””

Evelyn crossed her arms.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

I stared at her.

“Then explain.””

Nothing.

“Explain why you have pictures of me before I even knew you existed.””

Still nothing.

Then the basement door slammed.

Everyone turned.

The woman from the phone stood at the top of the stairs.

Her face was wet from the rain.

Her eyes were filled with tears.

“Because Evelyn has been lying to you for eight years.””

Daniel froze.

“Sarah.””

The woman looked at him.

“You remember me.””

My heart stopped.

Sarah.

The name from the photograph.

The first wife?

The old girlfriend?

I didn’t know.

But I knew one thing.

Daniel knew exactly who she was.

“You called me,” I whispered.

Sarah nodded.

“I had to.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“You have no right coming here.””

Sarah laughed bitterly.

“No right?””

Her voice shook.

“You destroyed my life.””

Daniel looked between us.

“Sarah, leave.””

“No.””

She walked down the stairs.

“For once, you’re going to tell her the truth.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Stop.””

Sarah looked at me.

“Your husband didn’t meet you by accident.””

The words hit me.

“What?””

“He chose you.””

The basement became silent.

I looked at Daniel.

He didn’t deny it.

And that was the moment my heart truly broke.

“What does that mean?””

Sarah looked at the wall.

Then back at me.

“Your marriage was planned.””

I felt dizzy.

“No.””

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Daniel?””

He finally looked at me.

And the expression on his face told me everything.

The man I loved wasn’t hiding one secret.

He was hiding an entire story.
