Chapter 9: The Truth My Father Hid From Everyone
The gun was pointed at me.
But Marcus wasn’t looking at me.
That was the first thing I noticed.
A man holding a weapon usually watches the person he plans to hurt.
Marcus wasn’t watching me.
He was watching everyone else.
Richard.
Victoria.
Claire.
Daniel.
Like he was waiting for one of them to make the first move.
“Marcus,” Claire whispered.
His expression didn’t change.
“Don’t.””
Her face tightened.
“You came here to finish what you started?””
“No.””
His answer was immediate.
“I came here because someone has to stop what your husband began.””
My father.
Even now, every time someone said his name without saying it, I felt the wound open again.
I slowly turned my head.
“Are you going to shoot me?””
Marcus looked at me.
For a second, I saw the man I remembered.
The man who taught me how to stand.
The man who corrected my mistakes.
The man who used to tell me:
“Never throw a punch because you’re angry. Throw it because you have no other choice.””
Then I remembered the photograph.
The threats.
The secrets.
The years of lies.
“I don’t know anymore,” Marcus said.
That answer bothered me more than a threat.
“You don’t know?””
His jaw tightened.
“No.””
The hallway went silent.
Richard laughed softly.
“How touching.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Stay out of this.””
“You always were sentimental.””
Richard took a step forward.
“Your weakness was always the same.””
Marcus’s eyes narrowed.
“And yours was thinking you were untouchable.””
The tension between them was immediate.
Two powerful men.
Two enemies.
And somehow, I was standing in the middle.
I raised my voice.
“Enough.””
Everyone looked at me.
I stared at Marcus.
“You have answers.””
He lowered the gun slightly.
“Ethan—”
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“Everybody in this room has used me.””
Silence.
“You used my brother.””
I looked at Richard.
“You used my family.””
I looked at Victoria.
“You used my father’s name.””
I looked at Daniel.
“You protected secrets instead of protecting us.””
Then I looked at Claire.
“And you left me to grow up believing you were dead.””
My mother looked like I had physically hurt her.
But I didn’t look away.
Because for the first time in eleven years, I needed everyone to hear me.
“I spent my whole life thinking I lost my family.””
My voice cracked.
“But the truth is…”
I looked around.
“I was surrounded by people who knew the truth and chose not to tell me.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Marcus lowered the gun completely.
“You’re right.””
Everyone looked surprised.
He continued:
“You deserve the truth.””
Richard scoffed.
“You think honesty fixes everything?””
“No.””
Marcus looked at him.
“But maybe it stops more people from dying.””
That caught my attention.
“More people?””
Marcus looked at me.
“Your father wasn’t the only person who disappeared.””
My stomach tightened.
“What are you talking about?””
Marcus looked at Claire.
“She never told you about the others.””
Claire shook her head.
“Because they were children.””
The words came out quietly.
I froze.
“What children?””
Marcus looked at me.
“Children connected to Black Crown.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus took a breath.
“Black Crown started as fights.””
He looked at Victoria.
“Then it became business.””
Then Richard.
“Then it became influence.””
Finally, me.
“And eventually, it became selection.””
I frowned.
“Selection?””
Marcus nodded.
“They searched for people with certain traits.””
“What traits?””
“Pain tolerance.””
“Anger control.””
“Survival instinct.””
The room felt colder.
“You mean fighters.””
“No.””
Marcus looked at me.
“They wanted people who could survive impossible situations.””
My mind went back to my childhood.
The training.
The fights.
The way my father pushed me.
The way Marcus pushed me harder.
“You trained me.””
Marcus looked away.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His answer was quiet.
“Because your father asked me to.””
I froze.
“What?””
Claire looked at me.
“Ethan…”
“No.””
I looked at Marcus.
“My father wanted you to train me?””
Marcus nodded.
“He knew what was coming.””
“Then why?””
“Because he wanted you ready.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Ready for what?””
Marcus looked at the floor.
“For the day you found out who he really was.””
Nobody moved.
Then Marcus continued.
“Your father was not trying to create a fighter.””
I waited.
“He was trying to create someone who could expose everything after he was gone.””
My eyes narrowed.
“And the fights?””
“Were a cover.””
I stared.
“The underground rings?””
“A way to hide your training.””
The room went silent.
Ten years.
Ten years of fighting.
Ten years of believing I had wasted my life.
And now I was hearing it had all been part of something bigger.
I hated that.
Because some part of me wanted to believe him.
But another part wanted to scream.
“You let me become that person.””
Marcus looked at me.
“I watched you become stronger.””
“No.””
My voice sharpened.
“You watched me become angry.””
He didn’t answer.
Because he knew.
I stepped closer.
“You knew exactly what would happen.””
“Yes.””
“You knew I would lose control.””
“Yes.””
“And you still pushed me.””
Marcus’s eyes filled with regret.
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“You’re no different from them.””
The words hurt him.
Good.
Then Daniel spoke.
“Ethan.””
I looked at him.
“There’s something you need to know.””
“What?””
Daniel looked at Marcus.
Then Claire.
“The ledger was never hidden.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“It was never a physical book.””
Richard’s expression changed.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel opened the old file.
“The Black Ledger was a person.””
Nobody moved.
I stared.
“That makes no sense.””
Daniel nodded.
“Your father discovered that keeping information in one place was dangerous.””
“Because someone could steal it.””
“Exactly.””
He looked at me.
“So he created something nobody could steal.””
My heartbeat increased.
“What?””
Daniel looked at Claire.
She whispered:
“Ethan.””
I turned.
My mother’s eyes filled with tears.
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I wanted you to have a normal life.””
My stomach dropped.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel answered.
“The ledger wasn’t stored somewhere.””
A pause.
“It was stored in someone.””
The room became completely silent.
Then Richard whispered:
“Oh no.””
Everyone looked at him.
For the first time, he looked genuinely afraid.
I stared at Daniel.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
I looked at Claire.
“Who?””
My mother stepped closer.
“I’m sorry.””
The words scared me.
Because I had heard those words too many times.
“I’m sorry” meant someone was about to tell you something that would change everything.
Claire reached into her coat.
Pulled out a small device.
A medical scan.
She handed it to me.
I looked down.
I didn’t understand it at first.
Then I saw the name.
My name.
Ethan Walker.
My hands started shaking.
“What is this?””
Claire cried silently.
“Your father found a way to protect the information.””
I looked up.
“How?””
She whispered:
“He put it somewhere nobody would ever think to look.””
My breathing slowed.
The room felt unreal.
“Where?””
Claire looked directly into my eyes.
And said the words I never expected.
“Inside you.””
I stared at her.
“No.””
She nodded through tears.
“Yes.””
Richard stepped back.
“That’s impossible.””
Marcus looked devastated.
“He actually did it.””
I looked between them.
“You’re telling me my father put the ledger inside me?””
“Not the ledger.””
Daniel corrected softly.
“The key to the ledger.””
I couldn’t speak.
The memories came rushing back.
The surgeries.
The hospital visits.
The strange procedures as a child.
Things I had forgotten.
Things I thought were normal.
My father standing beside my hospital bed.
Holding my hand.
Telling me:
“Everything will be okay.””
I looked at Claire.
“You knew.””
She nodded.
“I knew.””
“And you let me live my entire life without telling me?””
“I wanted you safe.””
“Safe?””
My voice broke.
“Everyone who knew the truth came after me.””
Nobody answered.
Then the building shook again.
A loud explosion from outside.
The windows rattled.
Marcus immediately looked toward the sound.
“They found us.””
Richard cursed.
Victoria moved toward the exit.
“We need to leave.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
“They’re not here for the ledger.””
He looked at me.
“They’re here for Ethan.””
A second explosion.
Closer.
The lights went out.
In the darkness, I heard footsteps.
Many footsteps.
Then a voice came through the broken doorway.
A voice I recognized.
Calm.
Confident.
Familiar.
“Ethan Walker.””
The same voice from the phone.
My father.
But this time…
It wasn’t a recording.
The lights flickered back on.
And standing in the doorway was the man I had buried eleven years ago.
Richard Kane looked terrified.
Victoria whispered:
“No…”
Jake couldn’t breathe.
“Dad…”
My father looked at me.
Older.
Tired.
Alive.
And the first words out of his mouth were:
“Ethan…”
He looked at the people around me.
Then at the medical scan in my hand.
His expression changed.
“You found out.””
I couldn’t move.
Couldn’t speak.
The man I spent eleven years mourning stared back at me.
Then he said:
“I’m sorry you had to learn the truth this way.””
A pause.
Then his eyes moved to Marcus.
“And I’m sorry you trusted the wrong person.””
Marcus went still.
My father looked at him.
“Because he’s not the one who betrayed me.””
Everyone froze.
My father took one step forward.
And pointed at Richard Kane.
“The man who destroyed our family…”
May you like
He looked at me.
“…is standing right there.””
