Chapter 3: The Mother Behind the Door

For eleven years, I had imagined what it would feel like to hear my mother’s voice again.

In my dreams, it was always the same.

She would call my name from somewhere far away.

I would run toward her.

She would tell me everything was a misunderstanding.

A terrible mistake.

And then I would wake up.

Every single time.

But nothing in those dreams prepared me for that moment.

Standing in a dark apartment.

My brother beside me.

An old man holding a secret file.

And a voice outside the door saying the words I had buried my whole life.

“Your mother needs to talk to you.””

Jake grabbed my arm.

“Ethan…”

I couldn’t move.

My brain was screaming that it was impossible.

My heart was saying something else.

The lock turned.

Daniel stepped between us and the door.

“Wait.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

His face was tense.

“Your mother is not the same woman you remember.””

The words hit me strangely.

“What does that mean?””

Before he could answer, the door opened.

Slowly.

A woman stepped inside.

She wore a dark coat.

Her blonde hair was pulled back.

Her face had aged.

But her eyes…

Those eyes were the same.

The same eyes that looked at me when I was sick.

The same eyes that watched my first fight.

The same eyes that cried when I left home.

Jake made a sound beside me.

Almost a whisper.

“Mom?””

The woman froze.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Jake.””

My brother moved before I could react.

He crossed the room and hugged her.

I stood there.

Frozen.

Watching my younger brother hold the woman we had buried.

The woman who had left us.

The woman who was supposed to be dead.

She held him tightly.

“I’m sorry.””

Jake’s voice broke.

“Why?””

One word.

A simple question.

But it carried eleven years of pain.

She closed her eyes.

“I know.””

“No.””

Jake stepped back.

His face was wet with tears.

“You don’t know.””

The room became painfully quiet.

“You don’t know what it was like.””

His voice shook.

“I waited for you.””

Claire looked down.

“I know.””

“I checked the driveway every morning for months.””

She covered her mouth.

“I know.””

“I thought maybe the police were wrong.””

Jake laughed bitterly.

“I thought maybe you were hurt somewhere.””

His voice got louder.

“Do you know how many birthdays I spent wondering if you were alive?””

Claire couldn’t answer.

I watched her absorb every word.

And the worst part was…

I still wanted to believe her.

Even after everything.

Even after eleven years.

Because she was my mother.

And some parts of childhood never disappear.

They just hide.

Finally, I spoke.

“Why?””

Everyone looked at me.

My voice sounded colder than I expected.

“Why did you let us think you were dead?””

Claire looked at me.

And I saw something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not fear of me.

Fear of the answer.

“Because if Black Crown knew I survived, you would have died.””

I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was impossible to process.

“They killed Dad.””

Her face changed.

“Yes.””

“You disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“And you left two kids alone because you thought that was protecting us?””

A tear ran down her cheek.

“I left because staying would have gotten you killed.””

I stepped closer.

“Then why come back now?””

Silence.

Claire looked at Daniel.

Then at the file on the table.

“They found Ethan.””

Jake looked between us.

“They already knew about him.””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice became urgent.

“They knew he was alive.””

She looked at me.

“But they didn’t know where he was.””

A cold feeling moved through my chest.

“Until tonight.””

She nodded.

“The basement wasn’t about Jake.””

I clenched my jaw.

“They used him.””

“Yes.””

“And you knew this would happen?””

“No.””

Her answer came immediately.

Too quickly.

I studied her face.

“Then how did they find me?””

Nobody spoke.

That silence told me everything.

I looked at Daniel.

Then Claire.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

Daniel sighed.

“Your retirement wasn’t as secret as you believed.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What?””

Claire walked toward the table.

She touched the file.

“When you fought for Black Crown, they recorded every match.””

“I know.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

She opened the file.

Inside were pages and pages of information.

Photos.

Addresses.

Bank records.

Fight schedules.

Then she pulled out one photograph.

It showed me.

Years ago.

Standing inside the ring.

Covered in sweat.

A crowd behind me.

A black crown symbol painted on the wall.

“They didn’t just record your fights.””

She placed another document down.

“They studied you.””

I stared at the pages.

“Studied me?””

“Your reactions.””

“My reactions?””

“The way you think.””

Claire looked at me.

“The way you protect people.””

My stomach tightened.

“They knew exactly what you would do when Jake was threatened.””

I looked away.

Because she was right.

They knew.

They knew I would run into that basement.

They knew I would fight.

They knew I would lose control.

The video.

The recording.

The test.

It all made sense.

Jake looked at the papers.

“So they wanted proof Ethan was still dangerous?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“They wanted proof he could still be controlled.””

The room went silent.

My hands slowly curled into fists.

“I’m not controlled by anyone.””

Claire looked at me sadly.

“That’s what I told your father.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She hesitated.

“Your father believed Black Crown was not just a fight organization.””

Daniel opened another document.

“They were recruiting.””

“Recruiting fighters?””

“No.””

He looked at Jake.

“Recruiting weapons.””

A strange silence followed.

I stared at the file.

“What does that mean?””

Claire sat down.

“When you were younger, your father discovered Black Crown had connections everywhere.””

“Where?””

“Business.””

“Politics.””

“Law enforcement.””

My expression hardened.

“That’s impossible.””

“No,” Daniel said quietly.

“It’s exactly why your father was killed.””

I looked at Claire.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“He found proof.””

“What proof?””

Her eyes moved toward the box.

“The kind of proof that could destroy powerful people.””

Jake stepped forward.

“Then why didn’t you release it?””

Claire looked at him.

“Because they would have killed you.””

The anger on Jake’s face softened.

Only slightly.

I understood why.

Because that was the cruelest part.

Maybe she was telling the truth.

Maybe every terrible decision she made came from trying to protect us.

But that didn’t erase what it cost.

I spent eleven years hating a dead woman.

And she spent eleven years alive without us.

Neither side got those years back.

A sound suddenly came from outside.

A car door shutting.

Everyone stopped.

Daniel moved toward the window.

His face changed.

“They’re here.””

Claire stood.

“Who?””

Daniel looked outside.

“Black Crown.””

Jake went pale.

“How?””

Claire grabbed my arm.

“We need to leave.””

I pulled away.

“No.””

She looked shocked.

“No?””

“I spent eleven years thinking you abandoned us.””

“Ethan—”

“I spent six months trying to forget that world.””

My voice rose.

“And tonight they dragged me back into it.””

I pointed at the door.

“I’m done running.””

Claire stared at me.

For a moment, she looked less like a stranger.

She looked like my mother again.

“You sound like your father.””

I froze.

“What did you say?””

She looked away.

“That’s what scared me most.””

The first hit landed against the apartment door.

Everyone jumped.

Another hit.

The frame cracked.

Jake backed away.

Daniel grabbed the file.

Claire looked at me.

“Listen carefully.””

Another hit.

“The men outside are not here to fight you.””

I looked at the door.

“Then why are they here?””

The third hit broke the lock halfway.

Claire whispered:

“They’re here to see if you will choose your family…”

The door shook again.

“…or become exactly what Black Crown created.””

The door burst open.

Men in black jackets flooded the hallway.

But the first person who stepped inside wasn’t a fighter.

It was a woman.

Elegant.

Calm.

Carrying a thin folder.

She looked directly at me.

And smiled.

“Ethan Walker.””

My body went still.

She opened the folder.

“I’ve been waiting a long time to meet you.””

I stared at her.

“Who are you?””

Her smile widened.

“My name is Victoria Kane.””

She glanced at Claire.

Then back at me.

“And I’m the reason your mother had to disappear.””

She placed a photograph on the table.

A photograph of my father.

Alive.

Standing beside her.

My breath stopped.

May you like

Because written on the back were three words.

*HE CHOSE US.*
