Chapter 5: The Guardian’s Secret
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The silence in that apartment was heavier than any fight I had ever been in.
I stared at Daniel Mercer.
The man who had opened his home to us.
The man who had protected my mother.
The man who claimed my father trusted him.
The man whose name now sat inside my father’s final warning.
Jake looked confused.
Then angry.
Then scared.
“Daniel?””
The old man looked at the floor.
That was the first thing that told me something was wrong.
A guilty person doesn’t always run.
Sometimes they just stop pretending.
“Answer me,” I said.
Daniel slowly lifted his eyes.
“Ethan…”
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
Almost too quiet.
“You don’t get to say my name like everything is normal.””
Claire stepped forward.
“Ethan, wait.””
I turned toward her.
“Did you know?””
She froze.
“Did you know my father wrote this about him?””
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
“I swear, I didn’t.””
I looked back at Daniel.
“Then explain.””
Daniel sat down.
For the first time since I met him, he looked old.
Not wise.
Not calm.
Just tired.
“I was hoping this day would never come.””
My jaw tightened.
“That’s not an answer.””
He looked at the document in my hand.
“Your father was right about one thing.””
“What?””
“I was close to the truth.””
The room went silent again.
Jake stepped forward.
“Close to the truth?””
Daniel nodded.
“Your father didn’t trust many people.””
“Apparently not you.””
A painful expression crossed his face.
“He had reasons.””
I laughed once.
“You’re standing in front of us after hiding for eleven years, and you’re talking about reasons?””
Daniel accepted the anger.
Maybe because he deserved it.
“Your father and I met before Black Crown became what it became.””
“How?””
“We were soldiers together.””
That surprised me.
I stared at him.
“My father was in the military?””
Daniel nodded.
“He was one of the best men I ever knew.””
“Then why would he build something like Black Crown?””
Daniel looked down.
“Because he thought he could control it.””
Victoria gave a cold laugh.
“He always thought he was smarter than everyone else.””
Daniel ignored her.
“He believed fighters were being exploited. He wanted to create a place where people could compete without being owned.””
“And then?””
“Then money arrived.””
Daniel looked at the window.
“People with power started investing.””
“People like Victoria?””
“Yes.””
Victoria smiled.
“Your father was brilliant. He understood people wanted violence. I simply understood how to profit from it.””
I looked at her.
“You make that sound normal.””
“It is normal.””
“No.””
My voice hardened.
“It’s just something people like you tell yourselves.””
For a moment, Victoria looked annoyed.
Good.
I wanted her annoyed.
I wanted her to know I wasn’t the scared teenager she remembered.
I had spent ten years learning how to survive people like her.
I turned back to Daniel.
“What did my father discover?””
Daniel hesitated.
Claire answered.
“The ledger.””
I looked at her.
“Tell me.””
She took a breath.
“The Black Ledger wasn’t just financial records.””
“What else?””
“It contained names.””
“Whose names?””
“Everyone who helped Black Crown grow.””
Daniel added quietly:
“Politicians. Business owners. Judges. Police officials.””
Jake stared.
“So that’s why they’re still looking for it.””
“Yes.””
I looked at Daniel.
“And my father thought you betrayed him.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“He thought I was working with them.””
“Were you?””
The question hung in the room.
Daniel didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“Were you?””
“No.””
The response was immediate.
Strong.
But I had learned something during my years fighting.
The strongest punches were not always the ones thrown hardest.
They were the ones you never saw coming.
I watched his face.
Trying to find the lie.
“I wanted to help him.””
“Then why did he accuse you?””
Daniel looked at Claire.
She looked away.
That bothered me.
“Because I made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
Daniel stood slowly.
“I trusted the wrong person.””
He walked toward the cabinet and removed a small metal key.
Then he placed it on the table.
“I was supposed to deliver something to your father.””
“What?””
“The ledger.””
Everyone went still.
“You had it?””
“No.””
“Then what did you deliver?””
Daniel looked at me.
“A message.””
My stomach tightened.
“From who?””
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“Black Crown.””
Daniel nodded.
“I thought I was helping your father escape.””
“And?””
“They intercepted him.””
The room went silent.
I stared at him.
“You led them to him.””
Daniel looked destroyed.
“Yes.””
Jake stepped back.
“So you did betray him.””
Daniel didn’t defend himself.
“I made a choice that got him hurt.””
The anger inside me rose.
“You let my father die.””
“I thought he was dead.””
“But you didn’t know.””
“No.””
The honesty made it worse.
Daniel looked at me.
“I spent eleven years trying to find out what happened.””
“Convenient.””
“I never stopped looking.””
“Then why hide?””
“Because Claire made me promise.””
I looked at my mother.
She looked broken.
“Why?””
Claire’s voice was barely above a whisper.
“Because after your father disappeared, Black Crown came for us.””
She looked at Jake.
“They knew we were his weakness.””
Her eyes moved to me.
“They wanted to use you.””
A memory flashed.
Me at seventeen.
Angry.
Lost.
Ready to fight anyone who looked at me wrong.
I had thought it was teenage anger.
Maybe it was something else.
Maybe I had been carrying the same rage my father carried.
Claire continued.
“Daniel helped us escape.””
I looked at him.
“He protected us?””
“Yes.””
Daniel nodded.
“But your father didn’t know.””
“Because he thought you betrayed him.””
“Yes.””
The room became quiet.
Too many truths.
Too many lies.
I didn’t know who deserved my anger anymore.
Then Victoria spoke.
“Beautiful story.””
Everyone turned.
She stood near the door.
Arms crossed.
“Unfortunately, stories are easy to create.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying Daniel is still hiding something.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Victoria smiled.
“I know exactly what I’m talking about.””
She reached into her coat.
Pulled out a small device.
And placed it on the table.
A recording device.
My heart sank.
“What is that?””
“Your father’s last recording.””
Nobody moved.
Claire whispered:
“No.””
Victoria pressed the button.
Static filled the room.
Then a voice.
A voice I hadn’t heard in eleven years.
My father.
“If you’re hearing this, then I’m already gone.””
My knees almost weakened.
Jake covered his mouth.
The recording continued.
“I don’t know who will find this. I don’t know who I can trust.””
A pause.
Then my father said something that made my blood freeze.
“Ethan, if you are listening…”
I stepped closer.
The voice continued.
“You need to understand something.””
Static.
A breath.
Then:
“The person who betrayed me wasn’t trying to kill me.””
Everyone stared at the speaker.
“They were trying to protect me.””
I looked at Daniel.
Confusion replaced anger.
My father’s voice continued.
“And that person was forced to choose between saving my life…”
The recording crackled.
“…and saving my family.””
The device clicked.
The room went silent.
Victoria looked satisfied.
“That changes things.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
She smiled.
“Because your father never said Daniel betrayed him.””
My eyes moved to the paper.
The accusation.
The guardian.
The warning.
Then Victoria pointed at the document.
“You assumed the guardian was Daniel.””
My blood ran cold.
Jake looked at the page.
“Wait…”
Claire slowly stepped back.
“No.””
Victoria’s smile disappeared.
“The guardian your father was talking about…”
She looked directly at Claire.
“…was someone else.””
Nobody breathed.
Then she reached into her folder.
Pulled out another photograph.
And placed it beside the first.
A picture of my father.
Claire.
Me.
Jake.
And one more person.
Someone I recognized immediately.
Someone who had been in our house every day when we were children.
Someone who had raised us when our parents were gone.
Victoria whispered:
“Your father’s warning wasn’t about the person protecting you.””
She tapped the photograph.
“It was about the person pretending to.””
I looked at the face in the picture.
And my entire body went cold.
Because the person standing behind my family…
Was the one person I never thought to question.
My father’s closest friend.
The man who taught me how to fight.
The man who taught me how to survive.
May you like
My mentor.
And the last person I ever expected to be my enemy.
