Chapter 7: The Promise That Shattered Everything

“Tell me exactly what you promised my sister.””

My question hung over the backyard.

Blake stared at me, his lips pressed together, while Harper stood beside him with tears streaming down her face.

For the first time since the photographs had fallen from the box, I wasn't interested in watching either of them suffer.

I wanted answers.

Real answers.

Not another excuse about being confused, not another speech about how things had gotten out of control, and certainly not another promise that Blake had intended to tell me the truth someday.

I had spent eight years believing his promises.

I wasn't going to believe another one simply because he looked frightened.

“Blake,” I said, “you told Harper you were going to marry her. Is that true?””

He glanced at his parents.

His mother shook her head slowly, tears shining in her eyes.

“Son, please tell me you didn't.””

Blake dragged a hand across his face.

“We talked about what might happen if things changed.””

His father stepped forward.

“That's not what she asked you.””

Blake's shoulders stiffened.

“Dad, stay out of this.””

“Stay out of it?”” his father repeated.

“You brought this into the middle of a family celebration. You humiliated your pregnant wife in front of everyone she loves. And now you want us to pretend we're not hearing what you're saying?””

Blake looked away.

Harper suddenly spoke.

“He promised me we would have a life together.””

I turned toward her.

She wiped her cheeks with both hands, struggling to catch her breath.

“He told me that he loved me. He said he had never felt understood the way he felt with me. He said his marriage had become something he couldn't escape.””

I stared at her.

“Couldn't escape?””

She flinched.

“I know how that sounds.””

“Do you?””

My voice was quieter than I expected.

“Because from where I was standing, you had every opportunity to stop. You could have walked away from him. You could have told me what was happening. You could have decided that your sister's marriage mattered more than whatever excitement you found in sneaking around with her husband.””

Harper lowered her eyes.

“I thought he was going to leave you.””

“And that made it acceptable?””

“No.””

“Then why?””

She had no answer.

I looked at Blake.

“Did you tell her you loved her?””

He hesitated.

Then he nodded.

“Yes.””

The admission hurt more than I wanted it to.

I had known about the physical affair.

I had seen the messages and photographs.

But hearing him confirm that he had told my sister he loved her made the betrayal feel different.

It wasn't simply that he had given someone else the intimacy that belonged in our marriage.

He had used the same words that had once made me believe I was safe with him.

I remembered our wedding day.

Blake had held my hands and promised that no matter what life brought us, we would face it together.

I remembered his voice when he told me he wanted a child with me.

I remembered the tears on his face when I showed him the pregnancy test.

Had he loved me then?

Had he loved Harper?

Or had he simply loved the feeling of having two women believe they were special to him?

“Did you promise her you would leave me?”” I asked.

“Yes,” Blake said quietly.

Harper looked at him.

“You said you would.””

“I said I was going to figure things out.””

“You said you couldn't keep living a lie.””

“I was trying to tell you how I felt.””

“You told me you wanted us to be together!””

Their voices rose over each other.

I stood motionless, watching my husband and sister argue about the promises they had made behind my back.

They weren't arguing about the damage they had done to me.

They were arguing about what he had promised her.

Somehow, that hurt almost as much as the affair itself.

My mother moved beside me.

“Come inside for a minute, sweetheart,” she whispered.

I shook my head.

“Not yet.””

I needed to hear this.

I needed to know whether there was anything else hiding behind the story I had uncovered.

Harper turned back toward me.

“I never wanted this to happen to you.””

I looked at her for a long moment.

“Then you should have stopped it.””

“I tried.””

“When?””

She opened her mouth.

I waited.

Nothing came.

I shook my head.

“You don't get to rewrite what happened because you're sorry people found out.””

Harper's face crumpled.

“I am sorry!””

“Are you sorry you did it, or are you sorry you can't keep pretending it didn't happen?””

She stared at me.

I could see the answer forming in her expression before she said anything.

And when she looked away, I knew I had touched the truth.

Blake suddenly stepped toward me.

“Listen. Whatever Harper told you, I never intended to abandon my child.””

I instinctively placed my hand over my stomach.

“I never said you did.””

“You're acting like I'm some kind of monster.””

I stared at him.

“You cheated on your pregnant wife with her own sister, lied to both of us, and planned a future behind my back. What would you like me to call that?””

He swallowed.

“I made mistakes.””

“A mistake is forgetting an anniversary. This was a year of decisions.””

He looked at the ground.

I continued before he could interrupt.

“You decided to meet her. You decided to keep meeting her. You decided to tell her you loved her.

You decided to let me believe our marriage was fine. And every morning you woke up beside me, you decided to keep lying.””

My voice broke.

“You didn't make one mistake, Blake. You made the same choice over and over again.””

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then his father spoke.

“Your wife is right.””

Blake looked up sharply.

“Dad—”

“No. You need to listen.””

His father's voice trembled with disappointment.

“You stood in front of your family and promised to love and protect this woman. Now she's carrying your child, and you've treated her like an obstacle to the life you wanted with someone else.””

Blake's mother began crying openly.

“I don't understand,” she whispered.

“We were so happy when you told us about the baby.””

Blake closed his eyes.

I remembered that day, too.

His parents had hugged us for so long that I had laughed.

His mother had immediately started knitting a tiny blanket.

His father had offered to help with nursery furniture.

They had been excited to welcome their first grandchild.

Now they were learning that the happiness they remembered had existed alongside a secret neither of them had known about.

I felt a painful sympathy for them.

They hadn't betrayed me.

They had simply loved their son and believed him when he said he was building a family.

Then Harper spoke again.

“There was something else he promised me.””

I turned toward her.

Blake's head snapped around.

“Harper, stop.””

She shook her head.

“No. I'm tired of protecting you.””

My heart began pounding.

“What else?””

Harper drew a shaky breath.

“He told me that after the baby was born, he would make sure you had somewhere to go.””

The words took a moment to register.

“Somewhere to go?””

“He said you would be taken care of.””

I stared at Blake.

“What does that mean?””

He looked furious.

“She is twisting what I said.””

“Then explain it.””

He didn't.

I stepped closer.

“Were you planning to make me leave our home?””

“No!””

“Were you planning to take the house away from me?””

“No!””

“Then why would you tell my sister I needed somewhere to go?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“I was trying to think about what would happen if we separated.””

“And you discussed it with her instead of your wife?””

He looked away.

I felt the last of my hope drain from me.

I had spent months preparing for our baby, believing we were making decisions together.

Meanwhile, Blake had been discussing my future with the woman he intended to marry.

I wasn't simply being betrayed.

I was being excluded from my own life.

My father stepped beside me.

“That's enough for today,” he said firmly.

“You don't owe these people another minute of your time.””

I almost agreed.

I wanted to go inside, close the bedroom door, and let myself fall apart somewhere nobody could see.

But then Blake spoke.

“There is something you still don't understand.””

I turned toward him.

“I'm listening.””

He glanced at Harper, and she immediately shook her head.

For the first time, she looked more frightened than ashamed.

Blake lowered his voice.

“The plan wasn't just about us getting together.””

My stomach tightened.

“What plan?””

He looked toward the reveal box, now empty except for a few scraps of paper.

Then he looked at me.

“We had discussed what would happen after the baby arrived.””

“I know that.””

“No,” he whispered.

“You don't.””

Harper began crying again.

“Blake, please.””

He ignored her.

“We talked about how complicated things would become if we separated after the birth. We talked about where everyone would live, how we would handle the family, and how we could avoid turning everything into a disaster.””

I stared at him.

“You mean you planned how to manage the consequences of your affair.””

He didn't answer.

“And what did you decide?””

He looked at Harper.

She pressed her hands against her mouth.

Then he said something that made the entire backyard seem to disappear around me.

“We thought it would be better if we waited until after the baby was born to tell you.””

I felt my breath catch.

“Why?””

“Because you were pregnant. We didn't want to put you under unnecessary stress.””

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

He had betrayed me for a year, planned a future with my sister, and discussed separating from me behind my back.

And now he was claiming that hiding the truth had been an act of kindness.

I shook my head slowly.

“You don't get to decide which truth I'm allowed to know.””

He looked at me, and for the first time, I saw the full extent of his fear.

He was finally realizing that the woman who had spent eight years trusting him was no longer going to protect him from the consequences of his choices.

I turned toward Harper.

“And you agreed to this?””

She nodded weakly.

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“Even when you were helping me prepare for the baby?””

She began sobbing.

“Yes.””

I looked at the ground.

For one brief moment, I thought I might collapse.

Then I felt my baby move.

A small, unmistakable flutter beneath my hand.

I closed my eyes and breathed.

I wasn't going to let their betrayal take away my ability to stand.

When I opened them again, I looked directly at Blake.

“You wanted to decide my future without me,” I said.

“You wanted to choose when I found out, where I would live, and what kind of family our child would have.””

He started to speak.

I raised my hand.

“Your decisions are over.””

The words came out quietly, but they changed something in the air between us.

Blake stared at me.

Harper stopped crying long enough to look up.

My mother squeezed my shoulder.

I took one step backward, putting distance between myself and the two people who had spent a year deciding what I deserved to know.

“You will not make another decision about my life without my knowledge or consent.””

Then I turned toward the house.

Behind me, Blake called my name.

I didn't stop.

Because I finally understood something I had been too heartbroken to see before.

They had spent months planning what would happen to me after the baby was born.

Neither of them had considered that I might refuse to follow their plan.

May you like

And for the first time since I discovered the affair, I wasn't thinking about how to make them explain themselves.

I was thinking about how to protect my future.
