Chapter 6: The Plan They Made Behind My Back
Blake looked around the backyard as though he were searching for a way to escape.
Guests were still standing near the tables.
Some had quietly moved toward the gate, uncomfortable with witnessing a family unravel.
Others remained rooted in place, unable to look away.
The photographs lay scattered across the grass, their corners lifting in the afternoon breeze.
I had wanted the evidence to speak for itself.
Now I was beginning to understand that the evidence was only the beginning of a much larger story.
“Tell me what you planned,” I said.
Blake rubbed his palms against his trousers.
“I don't want to discuss this in front of everyone.””
“You should have considered that before you made your choices.””
He glanced toward his parents.
His mother was crying quietly.
His father had folded his arms across his chest, his expression unreadable.
Then Blake looked at my father.
“Can we have a few minutes?””
My father answered before I could.
“You've had a year.””
Blake's face tightened.
I almost thanked my father, but I couldn't take my eyes off my husband.
I needed the truth.
Not because I expected it to repair anything.
Because I refused to leave this conversation with another collection of unanswered questions.
“Start talking,” I told him.
Blake took a breath.
“When Harper and I first got involved, we didn't plan for it to become serious.””
Harper let out a bitter laugh.
“That's a lie.””
He turned toward her.
“What?””
“You told me you loved me.””
The backyard fell silent again.
I looked at my sister.
She was staring at Blake through tears, and for the first time, I realized that whatever she believed their relationship was, she had expected something from him.
Perhaps she thought he would leave me.
Perhaps she believed she was the woman he truly wanted.
Perhaps she had convinced herself that the betrayal was justified because their love was somehow different from mine.
I didn't know.
And I no longer cared enough to guess.
Blake lowered his voice.
“Harper, this isn't helping.””
“You said you were going to be with me.””
“I said I was trying to figure things out.””
“You said your marriage was over.””
My heart pounded.
I turned toward him.
“You told her our marriage was over?””
He looked at me.
“I was unhappy.””
“That wasn't my question.””
He swallowed.
“Yes.””
I felt as though someone had opened a door inside my chest and let all the warmth escape.
For a year, I had believed we were working toward a future together.
We had discussed having a child.
We had planned holidays.
We had made decisions about money, furniture, and the home we wanted to build.
And while I was doing those things, Blake had been telling Harper that our marriage was already finished.
I remembered the night we sat on the couch discussing baby names.
He had laughed when I suggested one.
He had pulled me into his arms and told me that our child would be lucky to have me as a mother.
Had he gone to Harper afterward?
Had he told her he was only pretending?
“Did you ever intend to tell me the truth?”” I asked.
Blake hesitated.
“I was going to.””
“When?””
“I don't know.””
I nodded slowly.
That answer was more honest than anything else he had said.
He hadn't known when he would tell me.
He hadn't known whether he would leave.
He hadn't known what he wanted.
He had simply known that he could keep taking everything I offered while postponing the consequences.
“And the baby?”” I asked.
“Where did our child fit into your plans?””
His face changed.
“I wanted the baby.””
“I didn't ask whether you wanted the baby. I asked what you planned to do.””
He looked down.
Harper wiped her cheeks.
“We thought things might be easier if we waited until after the birth.””
I turned toward her.
“Easier for whom?””
She didn't answer.
“Easier for you to keep sleeping with my husband? Easier for him to pretend to be a devoted father while making plans with you?””
“Please stop.””
“No. You don't get to ask me to stop.””
My voice shook, but I kept going.
“You were at my doctor's appointments. You helped me prepare for this party. You held my hand when I was worried about the pregnancy. How could you do those things while knowing what you were doing?””
Harper covered her face again.
“I thought I could make it right.””
“How?””
She lowered her hands.
“I thought eventually you would understand.””
I stared at her.
“Understand what?””
“That we didn't mean for this to happen.””
I looked at Blake.
Then back at Harper.
“You had hundreds of opportunities to stop it from happening again.””
Neither spoke.
“You could have stopped after the first message. After the first meeting. After the first time you came into my home and looked me in the eyes.””
My voice cracked.
“You could have stopped when I told you I was pregnant.””
Harper began sobbing.
“I know.””
“No, you don't.””
I stepped away from her.
“If you understood, you wouldn't still be asking me to forgive you before you've even told me everything.””
That seemed to silence her.
Blake shifted his weight.
“There was another reason we waited.””
I turned toward him.
“What reason?””
He looked at Harper.
She stared at the ground.
For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
Then Blake said, “We were trying to work out what would happen with the house.””
I blinked.
“The house?””
“Our finances. The mortgage. Everything we share.””
I felt a strange, bitter disbelief settle over me.
“You were planning to leave me, and you were worried about the house?””
“I wasn't trying to take anything from you.””
“Then why were you discussing it behind my back?””
He rubbed his forehead.
“Because I didn't know how you would react.””
I almost laughed.
He had spent a year making decisions that would devastate me, yet he was concerned about how I might react when I discovered them.
“What exactly did you discuss?””
Blake hesitated.
Harper answered instead.
“He said he would need time to sort everything out.””
“That tells me nothing.””
“He said you might want to stay in the house with the baby.””
I stared at her.
“And what did he want?””
She looked at Blake.
He finally spoke.
“I thought we might need to sell it eventually.””
The words made my stomach drop.
Our house wasn't just a building.
It was where we had celebrated our anniversary, where we had planned our baby's nursery, where I had imagined our child taking their first steps.
It was the home I had believed we were building together.
“You planned to sell our home?””
“I said eventually.””
“And you discussed this with Harper?””
“Yes.””
“Before talking to me?””
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
I turned away.
My mother came closer and gently took my hand.
I held on to her, grateful for the support, but I couldn't stop thinking about how much of my life had apparently become a private discussion between two people who had no right to make decisions for me.
Then Harper spoke again.
“There was something else.””
I looked at her.
She seemed almost too frightened to continue.
Blake's head snapped toward her.
“Don't.””
She stared back at him.
“You can't keep making me carry this alone.””
I felt my mother's grip tighten around my hand.
“What else?”” I asked.
Harper swallowed.
“When you found out you were pregnant, Blake told me everything would have to change.””
My heart began beating faster.
“What does that mean?””
“He said the baby would make things complicated.””
I stared at Blake.
He looked furious.
“I never said that.””
“You did,” Harper replied.
“You said you couldn't keep pretending forever, but you couldn't leave while you were expecting a child.””
My throat tightened.
“So you were waiting for the baby to be born before you left?””
Blake shook his head.
“That's not the whole conversation.””
“Then tell me the rest.””
He opened his mouth.
Closed it.
Then finally said, “I didn't want to abandon my child.””
For a moment, I felt a small, painful flicker of relief.
At least he had thought about our baby.
At least he understood that a child wasn't something he could simply walk away from.
But then I remembered how easily he had walked away from his promises to me.
“How noble,” I whispered.
“You wanted to stay long enough to become a father before leaving your wife.””
His expression hardened.
“You're twisting everything.””
“Then explain it properly!””
My shout startled several guests.
I immediately pressed a hand against my stomach and took a slow breath.
I wouldn't let this confrontation take more from me than it already had.
My baby needed me to remain calm.
I needed to remain calm.
Blake seemed to notice my distress.
For a moment, his expression softened.
“Please,” he said.
“I don't want you getting upset.””
I looked at him in disbelief.
“You don't get to pretend you're worried about me now.””
He stepped back.
My father moved closer, placing himself between us without saying a word.
Then Harper spoke in a voice so quiet that I almost missed it.
“He also said you wouldn't be alone.””
I turned toward her.
“What?””
“He said that even if you two separated, the baby would still have a family.””
I stared at her.
“Why are you telling me this?””
She looked toward Blake, then back at me.
“Because he made me believe there was a future for us.””
My chest tightened.
“And you believed him?””
She nodded, tears running down her cheeks.
“Yes.””
I couldn't decide whether I felt anger or pity.
Perhaps both.
Harper had helped betray me, yet she had apparently built her own expectations around a man who had spent a year lying to two women at once.
That didn't make her innocent.
It only meant that the person I had trusted as my sister had also been willing to trust a man who had already proven he could deceive the person he claimed to love.
I looked at Blake.
“Did you promise her that you would marry her?””
He went completely still.
Harper's eyes widened.
Neither answered.
And suddenly, I understood why they had been so desperate to keep the affair hidden.
It wasn't merely about sex.
It wasn't merely about an unhappy marriage or a reckless decision.
They had been building an entire future in secret, using my home, my pregnancy, and my trust as the background to their plans.
“Did you?”” I asked again.
Blake's silence stretched between us.
Then he finally whispered, “We talked about it.””
Harper began crying harder.
My mother closed her eyes.
My father muttered something under his breath.
I stood perfectly still, one hand resting over my stomach, trying to absorb the fact that my husband had apparently discussed marrying my sister while I was preparing to give birth to his child.
I had thought the affair was the worst betrayal.
Now I knew it had been part of a plan.
And as I looked at Blake and Harper standing beside each other, both terrified of what their own words had exposed, I realized there was still one question neither of them had answered.
If they had been planning a future together for months, why had they continued pretending to support my pregnancy?
What had they expected me to do when they finally told me?
And what had Blake promised Harper that made her believe she would someday take my place?
I looked directly at my husband.
“Tell me exactly what you promised my sister.””
Blake stared at me.
For the first time, he seemed to understand that no apology, excuse, or carefully chosen explanation would make this conversation disappear.
May you like
Then he looked toward Harper.
And the expression they exchanged told me that the answer would change everything I thought I knew about the man I had married.
