Chapter 5: My Sister's Tears Hid Another Betrayal

I had imagined a hundred different explanations for Blake's behavior.

Maybe he had fallen in love with Harper.

Maybe he was planning to leave me.

Maybe he had convinced himself that the affair was something he could keep separate from our marriage.

But as I watched Harper standing in the middle of our backyard, trembling beneath the weight of a secret she clearly didn't want exposed, I realized I had been asking the wrong question.

I kept asking why they had betrayed me.

I should have been asking what they had been planning.

“Everybody needs to leave,” Blake announced suddenly.

His voice was sharp enough to silence the remaining whispers.

My father stepped forward.

“You don't get to order people out of your wife's yard after what you've done.””

Blake's face darkened.

“This is my house too.””

“And she's your wife,” my father replied.

“You seem to have forgotten what that means.””

Blake looked at me as if he expected me to intervene.

Once, I would have.

I would have tried to calm my father down, apologized for the tension, and found some way to make everyone feel comfortable again.

I would have worried about Blake's reputation.

I would have worried about Harper's feelings.

I would have worried about how the family would recover.

But standing there, surrounded by evidence of their betrayal, I realized I had spent too much of my life making myself responsible for other people's behavior.

“Anyone who wants to leave can leave,” I said.

“But nobody is going to silence me in my own home.””

My voice trembled slightly.

I didn't care.

Blake looked stunned.

Harper stared at me with red, swollen eyes.

Then my mother approached and wrapped an arm around my shoulders.

“I'm staying,” she said.

My father nodded.

“So am I.””

Blake's parents exchanged a painful glance.

His mother walked toward me slowly.

“I don't know what to say,” she whispered.

I looked at her.

“I don't expect you to fix it.””

She began crying.

“I raised him to know better.””

I had no answer for that.

Because I knew what it felt like to look at someone you loved and wonder how they could have become capable of hurting another person so deeply.

Blake turned away and ran a hand through his hair.

“Fine. I'll explain everything.””

He pointed toward the patio.

“Can we at least sit down?””

“No,” I said.

“You can explain it right here.””

He stared at me.

I held his gaze.

“If it's important enough to change my life, it's important enough to say out loud.””

Harper began shaking her head.

“Please don't do this.””

I turned toward her.

“You keep asking me not to do things. You asked me not to tell anyone. You asked me not to ask questions. You asked me to trust you.””

My voice cracked.

“And all that time, you were sleeping with my husband.””

Harper covered her face.

I felt the familiar instinct to comfort her rise inside me.

I fought it.

“I need you to stop crying long enough to tell me the truth.””

She lowered her hands.

For a moment, she looked like the little girl who used to follow me around the house, asking if she could play with my toys.

Then she looked toward Blake.

He gave her a small, almost imperceptible nod.

My stomach twisted.

Even now, they were deciding together what I was allowed to know.

“What are you two still hiding?”” I asked.

Blake exhaled.

“Harper and I have been talking about the future.””

I stared at him.

“What future?””

“Our future.””

The words seemed absurd.

He was standing in our backyard, surrounded by photographs proving that he had betrayed his pregnant wife, and he was talking about a future as though I were a minor inconvenience.

“You mean your future with my sister?””

He hesitated.

“Yes.””

My mother made a strangled sound.

My father looked as if he might lunge toward Blake, but my mother caught his arm.

I couldn't move.

I had known there was an affair.

I had known there were lies.

But hearing my husband admit that he had imagined a future with Harper made everything feel horribly real.

“How long have you been planning this?”” I asked.

Blake looked at Harper.

“Several months.””

I closed my eyes briefly.

Several months.

The same months in which he had helped me prepare for our baby.

The same months in which Harper had offered to organize the gender reveal.

The same months in which I had believed both of them were helping me build a family.

“What exactly were you planning?”” I asked.

Blake hesitated again.

Harper wiped her cheeks.

“We didn't have everything figured out.””

“Then start with what you did figure out.””

She looked at the grass.

Blake answered for her.

“We talked about separating.””

“Separating?””

He nodded.

“I was going to leave eventually.””

I felt a strange stillness settle over me.

“Eventually,” I repeated.

“Yes.””

“After the baby was born?””

He didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

I stared at him.

“You were going to let me go through pregnancy believing we were happily married, then leave me with a newborn?””

“I wasn't trying to hurt you.””

The words escaped him so quickly that even he seemed to realize how ridiculous they sounded.

I shook my head.

“Then what were you trying to do?””

He rubbed his face.

“I didn't know how to handle everything.””

“You handled it by lying.””

“I know.””

“You handled it by sleeping with my sister.””

“I know.””

“You handled it by letting me plan a gender reveal for a family you were already planning to abandon.””

His shoulders slumped.

“I said I know.””

I looked at Harper.

“And you were going to let me find out when?””

She whispered, “I don't know.””

I laughed once, without humor.

“You don't know anything except how to hide.””

Her face crumpled.

“That's not fair.””

The words startled me.

Not because they were cruel.

Because they were so familiar.

Harper had always been good at making herself the injured party when a conversation became uncomfortable.

As children, she would break something and cry harder than I did when our parents discovered it.

As teenagers, she would borrow my clothes without asking and accuse me of being selfish when I wanted them returned.

I had always forgiven her.

I had convinced myself that she was simply younger, more emotional, and still learning.

But she was no longer a child.

She had made adult decisions with my husband.

She had participated in a year of deception.

And now she was standing in front of me, demanding fairness.

“What part isn't fair, Harper?”” I asked.

“The part where I found out? Or the part where everyone else did?””

She stared at me.

Then she looked at Blake.

“Tell her the rest.””

He stiffened.

“Harper.””

“No,” she said, suddenly angry.

“You said you would tell her.””

My heart began pounding.

“Tell me what?””

Blake stepped toward her.

“Not here.””

“You don't get to decide that anymore,” Harper snapped.

For the first time, I saw something other than fear in her expression.

Resentment.

She was angry with Blake.

Not because he had betrayed me.

Because he had failed to keep something from coming out.

I looked between them.

“What are you talking about?””

Harper's lips trembled.

Blake shook his head.

Then Harper spoke.

“He told me you would never find out until everything was settled.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Until what was settled?””

She glanced at my belly.

Then she looked away.

The movement was so quick that I might have missed it if I hadn't been watching her closely.

I touched my stomach instinctively.

“What does my pregnancy have to do with this?””

Blake immediately stepped forward.

“Nothing. She's upset. She doesn't know what she's saying.””

Harper turned on him.

“Stop telling me what to say!””

The sudden outburst silenced everyone.

My mother stared at her.

My father moved closer to me.

Blake's face turned red.

I looked at Harper.

“Explain.””

She pressed both hands against her mouth, then lowered them.

“We talked about what would happen after the baby arrived.””

“I already know that. You planned to be together.””

“No,” she whispered.

“It was more than that.””

A chill ran through me.

“What does that mean?””

She glanced at Blake again.

He looked furious now.

“Harper, don't.””

I took a step toward her.

“Tell me.””

Her eyes filled with fresh tears.

“We talked about whether you would be able to manage everything alone.””

For a moment, I couldn't understand the sentence.

“Manage what?””

“The baby. The house. Everything.””

I stared at her.

“You were planning my life for me?””

She shook her head.

“We were just talking.””

“About whether I could raise my own child?””

“No! That's not what I meant.””

“Then what did you mean?””

Harper looked desperately at Blake.

He refused to meet her eyes.

And in that moment, I realized something terrible.

Whatever secret they had been keeping, they no longer trusted each other enough to protect it.

Their relationship was cracking beneath the pressure.

And I was standing in the middle of the wreckage, waiting to discover what else they had decided about my life without asking me.

“Harper,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

“What exactly did you and Blake plan to do after my baby was born?””

She opened her mouth.

No sound came out.

Then Blake stepped forward and said, “You need to hear the whole story before you make any decisions.””

I looked at him.

“I'm listening.””

May you like

He swallowed.

And for the first time since the photographs fell from the box, he looked genuinely afraid of what might happen next.
