Chapter 7: The Man Emily Was Looking For

Nobody moved.

The stranger stood halfway down the stairs, one hand gripping the railing, while Daniel stared at him like his entire understanding of the world had just been ripped apart.

I couldn’t blame him.

A few hours earlier, we thought we were dealing with one terrible secret.

Then another.

Then another.

Now there was a stranger in Margaret’s house claiming he knew why Emily’s first child had died.

The worst part was that Margaret looked afraid.

Not annoyed.

Not angry.

Afraid.

And I had never seen Margaret afraid of anything.

“Who are you?”” Daniel asked again.

The man slowly walked down the remaining steps.

“I’m Thomas Whitmore.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But Daniel reacted.

His eyes narrowed.

“Whitmore?””

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.””

He looked at the photograph on the table.

Then at Margaret.

“You kept it.””

Margaret’s face hardened.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Thomas gave a humorless laugh.

“Neither should you.””

Daniel stepped between them.

“Someone explain what is happening.””

Thomas stopped.

Then he looked at Daniel carefully.

“You’re Daniel Carter.””

“Yes.””

“I knew your wife.””

The words hit differently than everything else.

Because Daniel had already heard enough about men from Emily’s past.

Ryan.

The baby.

The secrets.

His expression became guarded.

“How?””

Thomas looked toward the photograph.

“Because I was the doctor who treated Emily two years ago.””

My stomach dropped.

“You were her doctor?””

Thomas nodded.

“I was working at St. Mary’s Hospital when Emily was admitted.””

Daniel stared.

“Why have I never heard your name?””

“Because I wasn’t supposed to be involved.””

Margaret immediately interrupted.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Everyone turned.

She stepped forward.

“This man is unstable.””

Thomas looked at her.

“Still using the same words?””

Her face changed.

Daniel noticed.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas ignored Margaret.

He looked at Daniel.

“Your wife came to see me three weeks before she died.””

Daniel went still.

“What?””

“She found my name in old hospital records.””

My fingers tightened.

The journal.

Claire Whitmore.

The name.

It wasn’t a person.

It was connected to him.

“Why did she come to you?”” I asked.

Thomas looked at me.

“You’re her sister.””

I nodded.

“She told me about you.””

That surprised me.

“What did she say?””

He gave a sad smile.

“She said you were the only person who believed her.””

My chest tightened.

Emily.

Even when she was scared, she still thought about other people.

Thomas continued.

“She came because she wanted answers.””

Daniel looked toward the photograph.

“About our first child.””

“Yes.””

“Was the baby born alive?””

Thomas became quiet.

Then he nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel looked like he had been punched.

“No.””

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“My wife was told she lost the baby.””

“She was.””

“Then how?””

Thomas looked at Margaret.

“Because the person who gave that information wasn’t honest.””

The room became silent.

Margaret crossed her arms.

“This is ridiculous.””

Thomas ignored her.

“Emily arrived at the hospital after complications.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What complications?””

“She was bleeding.””

I remembered Emily telling me about that day.

She said everything happened too fast.

She said doctors rushed her away.

“She thought she had lost the baby,” Thomas continued.

“But she hadn’t.””

Daniel’s voice was barely a whisper.

“What happened?””

Thomas looked down.

“The baby was delivered early.””

I felt tears forming.

“Then why did everyone say miscarriage?””

Thomas looked at Margaret.

“Because someone requested the records be changed.””

Daniel turned.

“Who?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Thomas answered.

“Margaret.””

The accusation landed like a bomb.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“No.””

Margaret’s face remained cold.

“She was confused.””

Thomas shook his head.

“She wasn’t.””

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“I was there.””

“You were a junior doctor.””

“I was the only person who saw the original records before they disappeared.””

Daniel looked between them.

“Disappeared?””

Thomas nodded.

“After the baby was born, the paperwork changed.””

My heart sank.

“Why?””

Thomas looked at Daniel.

“Because Margaret told the hospital there was a family emergency and the baby’s parents did not want further intervention.””

Daniel stared.

“That’s impossible.””

“I know.””

“You’re saying my mother made medical decisions?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Daniel looked sick.

“My wife was alive.””

“Yes.””

“She was the mother.””

“Yes.””

“And my mother decided?””

“Yes.””

Margaret finally exploded.

“Enough.””

Her voice shook the room.

“You don’t understand what you’re saying.””

Thomas turned toward her.

“I understand perfectly.””

“No, you don’t.””

Margaret stepped closer.

“I was protecting my son.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

She looked at him.

“I was protecting you.””

Daniel laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because he couldn’t believe it.

“Protecting me?””

“Yes.””

“From what?””

Margaret looked at him.

“From a child who would have destroyed your life.””

The silence afterward was terrifying.

Daniel’s face changed.

“What did you say?””

Margaret realized too late.

She had finally said the truth.

Thomas closed his eyes.

“I knew she would eventually admit it.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You thought my child would destroy my life?””

Margaret shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

His voice was louder.

“I don’t.””

“You were about to lose everything.””

“I had a baby.””

“You had a wife who lied to you.””

Daniel flinched.

Margaret continued.

“She was carrying another man’s child.””

The room froze.

Again.

The same wound.

The same accusation.

But this time, it felt different.

Because now it wasn’t about Ryan.

It was about a baby who never got a chance.

Thomas spoke quietly.

“You’re mixing two different things.””

Margaret looked at him.

“What?””

“The first baby was Daniel’s.””

Daniel stopped.

The words seemed impossible.

“What?””

Thomas looked at him.

“Your first child was yours.””

I looked at Margaret.

Her face had gone pale.

Daniel whispered:

“No.””

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.””

“But Emily…”

“Emily didn’t know.””

Daniel looked broken.

“She thought…”

“She thought the pregnancy was complicated because of her past.””

Thomas paused.

“She thought she was being punished.””

I covered my mouth.

Because that sounded exactly like Emily.

She carried guilt even when she didn’t deserve it.

Thomas continued.

“Ryan had nothing to do with the first pregnancy.””

Daniel looked at the photograph.

“Then why did my mother do this?””

Nobody answered.

Until Margaret did.

Quietly.

“Because I knew the truth.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What truth?””

Margaret’s eyes moved to Ethan.

Then back to Daniel.

“That Emily would leave you.””

The words made no sense.

“What?””

“She was going to tell you everything.””

“About what?””

Margaret looked at me.

Then at Thomas.

“She found out what happened.””

Daniel’s breathing changed.

“What happened?””

Margaret looked away.

For the first time, she looked almost human.

Almost.

“She found out I changed the records.””

Daniel stared.

“You admitted it.””

“I changed the records because I knew she would destroy your family.””

“You destroyed my family!””

“No!””

Margaret’s voice cracked.

“She was going to tell you that your first child survived.””

Daniel froze.

Thomas spoke.

“She survived for six hours.””

My heart broke.

Daniel covered his mouth.

Six hours.

A whole life reduced to six hours.

“She held her?”” Daniel asked.

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.””

“Emily?””

“Yes.””

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“And she never told me?””

Thomas looked at Margaret.

“Because Margaret threatened her.””

The room went cold.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“What did you threaten her with?””

Margaret said nothing.

Daniel’s voice shook.

“What did you threaten my wife with?””

Finally, Margaret whispered:

“I told her if she ever exposed me…”

She looked at Ethan.

“I would make sure she never kept another child.””

Nobody breathed.

Daniel stepped back.

Because now we all understood.

The washing machine.

The obsession.

The control.

Margaret wasn’t trying to help.

She was repeating something she had already done.

Thomas reached into his bag.

“I brought something Emily wanted Daniel to have.””

He pulled out a small envelope.

Daniel stared.

“What is that?””

Thomas handed it to him.

“She wrote it after she discovered the truth.””

Daniel took it slowly.

His hands shook as he opened it.

Inside was a single page.

Only a few sentences.

He read silently.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

He handed it to me.

The handwriting was Emily’s.

And the first sentence made my blood run cold.

Daniel, if you are reading this, then Margaret knows I found the other child.

I looked at the next line.

And my heart stopped.

But there is something I never told you.

The baby didn’t die alone.

Someone took her.

I looked up.

Daniel was staring at me.

Thomas was silent.

May you like

And Margaret whispered:

“You were never supposed to find that letter.””
