Chapter 12: The Father Who Never Left

For several seconds, nobody reacted.

The name on the page sat there like a threat.

*Ryan Callahan.*

The same name that had haunted every secret.

The same man Emily thought was part of her past.

The same man everyone believed disappeared.

But now his name was written in a letter connected to Emily’s birth.

Not her pregnancy.

Not Ethan.

Her birth.

Daniel stared at the paper.

“No.””

The word came out quietly.

Then again.

“No.””

I understood why.

Because the story we had been chasing kept changing.

Every time we found an answer, it opened another door.

And behind every door was another lie.

Thomas looked at the letter.

“I didn’t know about this.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You expect me to believe that?””

Thomas didn’t defend himself.

“I understand why you don’t.””

“You knew my wife was investigating my mother.””

“Yes.””

“You knew Lily existed.””

“Yes.””

“You knew there were records.””

“Yes.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“And now you’re telling me you didn’t know Ryan was connected?””

Thomas shook his head.

“I didn’t.””

The honesty in his voice stopped Daniel for a moment.

Not because he trusted him.

Because he was exhausted.

Everyone had lied.

Everyone had hidden something.

Even the people trying to help.

I looked back at the letter.

“Why would Emily’s birth mother mention Ryan?””

Nobody answered.

Then Margaret whispered:

“Because he knew.””

Everyone turned.

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“You know him.””

Margaret looked away.

“Mom.””

Her shoulders dropped.

“Yes.””

The room became silent.

“You knew Ryan?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Margaret looked at the floor.

“He was part of the family.””

Daniel stared.

“What?””

“He wasn’t always a stranger.””

I felt a chill.

“What are you saying?””

Margaret looked at me.

“Ryan was there before Emily was.””

That sentence made no sense.

Until it did.

The pieces started moving.

Ryan.

Emily’s past.

The hospital.

The adoption.

The secrets.

Daniel looked confused.

“Explain.””

Margaret sat down.

“I met Ryan when he was young.””

“When?””

“When he was a teenager.””

Nobody spoke.

“He worked at the hospital.””

Thomas looked shocked.

“That’s impossible.””

Margaret looked at him.

“No.””

“You’re saying Ryan knew about the adoption program?””

“Yes.””

Thomas stepped back.

“Why?””

Margaret looked at the letter.

“Because his father was involved.””

Daniel frowned.

“Who was his father?””

Margaret didn’t answer.

Thomas did.

And his face had gone pale.

“Dr. Callahan.””

I looked at him.

“Who is that?””

Thomas swallowed.

“The head of the department where I worked.””

Daniel looked between them.

“What department?””

Thomas answered:

“Maternal records.””

My stomach dropped.

The place where Emily’s records were changed.

The place where Lily’s documents disappeared.

The place where everything started.

Daniel looked at Margaret.

“So Ryan knew.””

Margaret nodded.

“He knew Emily was adopted.””

“And?””

“And he knew where she came from.””

Daniel looked disgusted.

“You kept this from her?””

Margaret’s eyes hardened.

“I was protecting her.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You were controlling her.””

Margaret stood.

“You don’t know what would have happened if she found out.””

“What happened?””

Margaret looked at the letter.

“Her mother was looking for her.””

Nobody spoke.

I felt my heart sink.

“Emily’s birth mother was alive?””

Margaret nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t she find Emily?””

Margaret said nothing.

Thomas looked at her.

“Because you stopped her.””

The accusation was quiet.

But devastating.

Margaret looked away.

Daniel’s face changed.

“Did you?””

No answer.

“Did you stop Emily’s mother from finding her?””

Margaret finally whispered:

“Yes.””

The room broke apart.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Daniel turned away.

Lily covered her mouth.

I felt tears burning my eyes.

Because Emily spent her whole life wondering where she came from.

And someone had known.

Someone had always known.

“Why?”” Daniel asked.

Margaret’s voice cracked.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That she would take Emily away.””

Daniel stared.

“You stole a child because you were scared someone would steal her from you?””

Margaret closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The simplicity of the answer was horrifying.

Thomas picked up the letter.

“There’s more.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What?””

He pointed to the bottom.

“This letter was not finished.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

Thomas turned the page.

“There’s another page.””

A folded sheet fell out.

Nobody moved.

Daniel picked it up.

The handwriting was different.

Messier.

Recent.

Emily’s.

My breath caught.

“She added to it.””

Daniel read.

Then his face changed.

“She knew.””

“What?””

He handed me the page.

I read Emily’s handwriting.

I finally found the woman who gave me life.

My heart hurt.

Her name is Sarah Callahan.

I looked up.

Ryan.

Thomas whispered:

“His sister.””

I continued reading.

She told me everything.

The next sentence made my hands shake.

Margaret didn’t choose me randomly.

I looked at Daniel.

“She knew.””

He took the page.

The next line said:

She chose me because she knew exactly who my father was.

Daniel frowned.

“Dr. Callahan?””

I nodded.

But there was more.

The final paragraph was underlined.

My birth father wasn’t just involved in my adoption.

He was involved in the disappearance of children from that hospital.

Nobody spoke.

Lily looked terrified.

Daniel stared at the page.

“Children?””

Thomas took the paper.

His eyes moved quickly.

Then he whispered:

“No.””

“What?””

He looked at us.

“Emily found the connection.””

“What connection?””

Thomas looked at Margaret.

Then at Lily.

“Lily wasn’t the first child.””

The room went silent.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Again?””

Another child.

Another secret.

Another life.

“How many?”” I asked.

Thomas looked at the records.

“I don’t know.””

Margaret whispered:

“Three.””

Everyone turned.

“What?””

Her eyes filled.

“Three children.””

Daniel stared.

“You know?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Margaret looked at Lily.

Then at him.

Then she said:

“Emily.””

A cold silence.

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“She was never taken.””

Margaret looked down.

“Yes, she was.””

My stomach dropped.

“What do you mean?””

Margaret looked at the documents.

“Emily wasn’t adopted because she was abandoned.””

Daniel stopped breathing.

“Then why?””

Margaret whispered:

“Because someone was trying to hide her.””

The room went still.

Thomas looked at the old records.

“Who?””

Margaret looked toward the window.

And for the first time, she looked like someone remembering something she wished she could forget.

“Her father.””

Daniel’s voice was barely there.

“Who is Emily’s father?””

Margaret looked at him.

And said:

“Ryan Callahan.””

Nobody moved.

Because the man we thought was connected to Emily’s betrayal…

was connected to her beginning.

And then Daniel’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

He answered slowly.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice came through.

Older.

Calm.

Certain.

“Daniel Carter?””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Yes.””

A pause.

Then the man said:

“My name is Ryan Callahan.””

Everyone froze.

“I heard you found my daughter.””

Daniel gripped the phone.

“Where are you?””

The man was silent for a moment.

Then he said:

“Closer than you think.””

May you like

The call ended.

And immediately, the lights in Margaret’s house went out.
