Chapter 13: The Man Behind Every Door

The darkness lasted only a few seconds.

But those seconds were enough.

Enough for everyone in that room to remember what kind of person we were dealing with.

A person who had spent decades hiding the truth.

A person who had moved children around like pieces on a board.

A person who had already proven that love, in the wrong hands, could become something terrifying.

Daniel immediately moved toward Ethan.

“Stay where you are,” he said.

The command wasn’t directed at us.

It was directed at himself.

A promise.

A father’s instinct.

I heard Lily stand behind me.

Thomas whispered:

“Someone cut the power.””

Margaret didn’t answer.

And that frightened me.

Because Margaret always had an answer.

Always.

The emergency lights flickered on a few seconds later, casting the room in a dull red glow.

Daniel looked around.

“Where’s my mother?””

Nobody spoke.

Then we heard it.

The back door closing.

Thomas moved quickly.

“She’s gone.””

Daniel stared.

“What?””

Thomas walked toward the kitchen.

The back door was open.

Cold air moved through the room.

“She left.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“Of course she did.””

I followed them outside.

The yard was empty.

No car.

No footsteps.

Nothing.

She had disappeared like she always did.

Leaving everyone else to deal with the damage.

Daniel looked at the road.

Then at Ethan.

“She knew he was coming.””

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.””

“She knew Ryan would call.””

“Yes.””

Daniel turned.

“Why?””

Thomas didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“Because Margaret was never afraid of Ryan.””

That sentence stopped me.

“What?””

Thomas looked toward the dark road.

“She was afraid of what he knew.””

Daniel tightened his grip on Ethan’s blanket.

“What does he know?””

Thomas looked at the house.

“The truth about Emily.””

Nobody spoke.

Because we all understood.

Emily had spent her entire life searching for answers.

And the person holding those answers had been alive the entire time.

A few minutes later, Daniel’s phone rang again.

Same number.

This time, he answered immediately.

“Where are you?””

Silence.

Then:

“You sound angry.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“You have no idea.””

A low breath came through the speaker.

“I imagine I don’t.””

“You know my wife.””

“Yes.””

“You knew Emily.””

“Yes.””

“You knew she was your daughter.””

A pause.

Then:

“Yes.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

The confirmation hurt.

Even though we expected it.

“How long?””

Ryan was quiet.

“Since the day she was born.””

My stomach twisted.

Daniel looked away.

“You let her believe she was abandoned.””

“Yes.””

“You let her grow up not knowing who she was.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

The answer came slowly.

“Because I was trying to keep her alive.””

Nobody moved.

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Everyone says that.””

A pause.

“My mother said that.””

“I know.””

“You don’t get to use the same excuse.””

Ryan sighed.

“I’m not asking you to forgive me.””

“Good.””

“I’m asking you to listen.””

Daniel looked at me.

Then at Lily.

Then at Ethan.

Finally, he said:

“Where are you?””

Another pause.

“Your sister’s house.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

Daniel stepped away from us.

“Emily’s house?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because that’s where she left the final evidence.””

Thomas immediately reacted.

“Impossible.””

Ryan heard him.

“Thomas.””

The name made Thomas freeze.

“You’re there?””

“Yes.””

“You knew?””

Ryan’s voice became colder.

“You knew too.””

Thomas looked away.

Daniel noticed.

“What?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

Thomas looked guilty.

And that was enough.

“Thomas.””

The older man sighed.

“Emily contacted Ryan.””

Daniel froze.

“When?””

“Before she died.””

My heart sank.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Thomas looked at him.

“Because Emily asked me not to.””

Daniel looked destroyed.

“Everyone knew.””

Nobody responded.

“Everyone knew except me.””

The sentence was quiet.

But it hurt more than anger.

Because Daniel wasn’t just angry.

He was grieving.

Grieving the wife he lost.

The daughter he missed.

The years stolen from him.

Ryan spoke through the phone.

“Daniel.””

He didn’t answer.

“Your wife was trying to bring everything into the open.””

“Then why didn’t she?””

“Because she found out how dangerous it was.””

Daniel looked at Lily.

“What happened?””

Ryan was silent.

Then:

“She discovered the hospital records were not just altered.””

Thomas stepped closer.

“What do you mean?””

Ryan answered:

“They were part of a larger operation.””

The room went quiet.

“What operation?”” I asked.

Ryan paused.

“Children who disappeared from families that couldn’t fight back.””

My stomach turned.

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“Are you saying…”

“Yes.””

Ryan’s voice was low.

“Emily discovered your mother was not acting alone.””

Thomas whispered:

“Dr. Callahan.””

“Yes.””

Ryan continued.

“My father.””

Nobody spoke.

The pieces finally connected.

The hospital.

The records.

The missing children.

Margaret.

Ryan.

Emily.

Lily.

All of them connected by one secret.

Daniel’s voice was cold.

“Your father helped my mother steal children?””

“Yes.””

“And you?””

A long pause.

“I tried to stop him.””

Daniel laughed softly.

“Did you?””

“No.””

The honesty surprised everyone.

Ryan continued.

“I was a coward.””

The word sat there.

“I was young. I thought I could fix it later.””

“And then?””

“Then Emily was born.””

Daniel’s face changed.

Ryan continued.

“When I realized what my father was doing, I tried to expose him.””

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

“Why?””

The answer was quiet.

“Because he threatened Emily.””

Nobody spoke.

Ryan continued.

“He said if I went public, he would make sure she disappeared.””

I felt sick.

“Margaret knew?””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked furious.

“She worked with him.””

“Yes.””

“And Claire?””

Ryan was silent.

Then:

“Claire was one of the people who tried to help.””

Lily looked up.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

“She knew?””

“She knew enough.””

Ryan continued.

“Your mother helped hide you because she was trying to protect you.””

Lily looked overwhelmed.

“And Emily?””

Ryan’s voice softened.

“Emily spent years trying to undo what we allowed to happen.””

Daniel looked down.

The pain on his face was unbearable.

“She died trying to fix everyone else’s mistakes.””

No one disagreed.

Then Ryan said:

“There’s something you need to know.””

Daniel looked up.

“What?””

“Margaret didn’t leave because she was afraid of being caught.””

A pause.

“She left because she knows where the original records are.””

Thomas immediately understood.

“The original files.””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

Ryan answered:

“Under Emily’s house.””

My heart stopped.

Daniel looked toward the road.

“What?””

“Emily found them before she died.””

“Then why didn’t she show me?””

“Because she was followed.””

The words sent a chill through me.

“By who?””

Ryan didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

We all thought the same thing.

Daniel looked back at Margaret’s house.

Then at his phone.

“Tell me what to do.””

For the first time, Ryan sounded surprised.

“You trust me?””

“No.””

A pause.

“I don’t.””

Daniel looked at Lily.

“I don’t trust anyone anymore.””

Then he looked at Ethan.

“But I need the truth.””

Ryan was quiet.

Then he said:

“Go to Emily’s house.””

Daniel nodded.

“We’re going.””

“And Daniel?””

“What?””

“When you find the files…”

A pause.

“Don’t open the last folder.””

Everyone froze.

Daniel frowned.

“Why?””

Ryan’s voice became almost a whisper.

“Because Emily put it there for you.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It will.””

The call ended.

Nobody moved.

Then Lily looked at me.

“Why would Emily hide something from him?””

I stared at the phone.

Because I knew my sister.

Emily didn’t hide things to hurt people.

She hid things to protect them.

And suddenly, I remembered the last conversation I ever had with her.

The one thing she said that I never understood.

If Daniel ever finds out everything, make sure he reads the last page last.

I had thought it was about the secret.

Now I knew.

It was about something worse.

Something Emily was afraid would destroy him.

And as we drove toward her house, Daniel received one final message.

From Ryan.

May you like

Only four words.

*She knew you’d come.*
