Chapter 9: The Truth My Father Buried
“Dante.””
My father’s voice filled the basement.
For twenty years, I had imagined hearing it again.
Sometimes in dreams.
Sometimes in the quiet moments before sleep.
I imagined he would tell me he was proud.
That he would explain why he left.
That he would give me the answers I spent half my life searching for.
I never imagined he would look into a camera and say my name like he knew I would be watching.
The video was old.
The quality was terrible.
But his eyes were the same.
Strong.
Tired.
Carrying the weight of something he never shared.
“If you are seeing this,” my father said, “then I failed.””
My chest tightened.
Maya stood beside me, silent.
Nico watched the screen with the same disbelief I felt.
My father continued.
“But if you are seeing this, it also means you survived.””
A pause.
“That was always the most important thing.””
I stepped closer to the screen.
“Why?””
My voice came out quietly.
“Why did you hide everything from me?””
The recording continued as if he could hear me.
“Dante, you are going to want answers.””
A sad smile crossed his face.
“I know you.””
For a second, I forgot everything else.
Because that was my father.
He always knew exactly what I would do.
“You will search for the person who betrayed us.””
The screen flickered.
“You will look for someone to blame.””
My father leaned closer.
“But you need to understand something.””
The room went silent.
“The person who destroyed our family was not born evil.””
I looked at Maya.
She looked away.
“He was created by fear.””
The video paused.
Then resumed.
My father placed a folder on the table in front of him.
The same symbol was on the cover.
“The organization behind the docks was never just about money.””
He opened the folder.
“It was about control.””
Names appeared on the screen.
People.
Organizations.
Connections.
“Marcus Vale was only one piece.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Then who was the rest?””
My father answered before I could ask.
“The Moretti family.””
The words felt like a punch.
Not because I didn’t suspect it.
Because hearing him say it made it real.
“My father built an empire.””
His voice lowered.
“He believed power could protect people.””
A pause.
“But power always demands something in return.””
The video changed.
Photos appeared.
My grandfather.
My father.
Old meetings.
Old agreements.
My family’s history.
“I discovered what our family had become.””
My father looked ashamed.
“And I tried to end it.””
Maya whispered:
“Dante…”
I looked at her.
“What?””
Her eyes were wet.
“He wanted out.””
I stared.
“What?””
“He was trying to destroy everything he built.””
The recording continued.
“I knew the people involved would not let me walk away.””
My father looked directly into the camera.
“So I made a plan.””
The video showed a document.
A protection agreement.
My name appeared.
*Dante Moretti.*
“Your father created the plan for you.””
Maya’s voice shook.
“To disappear.””
I looked at her.
“Disappear?””
She nodded.
“He wanted to fake your death.””
The room became still.
“What?””
My father continued.
“Dante, if you are watching this, then you already know the attack happened.””
I felt my hands tighten.
“But what you do not know is that you were never the target.””
The video changed.
A younger version of me appeared.
Security footage.
The same night.
My father’s voice continued.
“You were the reason they came.””
My breathing stopped.
“They believed you knew where I hid the evidence.””
I frowned.
“But I didn’t know anything.””
“Exactly.””
My father looked down.
“That was why you were safe.””
The video showed another person entering the hallway.
The image was blurry.
But I recognized the shape.
The height.
The movement.
Someone familiar.
The footage stopped.
A voice came from the speaker.
Victor.
“Enough.””
The screen froze.
I turned toward the locked door.
“You did this.””
Victor didn’t answer.
Maya walked toward the speaker.
“Victor.””
His voice remained calm.
“You should have stayed hidden.””
Maya laughed bitterly.
“And let you finish what you started?””
My eyes moved between them.
“What started?””
Silence.
Then Victor spoke.
“The truth.””
The door remained locked.
“You want to know who killed your father?””
I stepped closer.
“Yes.””
A pause.
“Then watch the rest.””
The video resumed.
My father appeared again.
But this time he looked different.
Not like a man recording a message.
Like a man preparing to confess.
“Dante.””
His voice softened.
“There is one thing I need you to know.””
He looked directly at the camera.
“Elena did not kill me.””
I looked at Maya.
She closed her eyes.
“I knew it.””
My father continued.
“She was a child.””
A pause.
“She was holding the weapon because I put it in her hands.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Maya whispered:
“Keep watching.””
The video continued.
“I needed everyone to believe Elena was responsible.””
My father looked broken.
“Because the person who attacked us was still inside the house.””
The screen changed.
A shadow appeared.
Someone entering.
My father continued.
“I could not protect Dante if the enemy knew the truth.””
The person moved closer.
The footage became clearer.
My stomach dropped.
Because I knew the person.
Everyone did.
The figure was Maya.
But not the Maya standing beside me.
A younger Maya.
Seventeen years old.
Holding a file.
Talking to my father.
The video ended.
I stared.
“No.””
Maya looked at me.
“Dante…”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“What am I watching?””
She stepped closer.
“I was there.””
“I know.””
“I was trying to help Dad.””
“Then why were you with him?””
She looked devastated.
“Because he trusted me.””
The basement shook slightly.
Somewhere above us, thunder rolled.
I looked at the screen.
Then at Maya.
“You knew.””
She nodded.
“You knew everything.””
“Yes.””
“And you lied.””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more than an excuse.
“Why?””
Maya cried silently.
“Because Dad asked me.””
I laughed.
A broken sound.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I looked at both sisters.
“My whole life has been controlled by promises I never made.””
Maya stepped closer.
“Dante, please.””
“No.””
I backed away.
“Tell me the truth.””
She nodded.
“I will.””
“Who attacked our house?””
Her eyes moved toward the speaker.
Then back to me.
“Victor.””
The name echoed.
Even though I expected it.
Even though every clue pointed there.
Hearing it still felt impossible.
“No.””
Maya nodded.
“Yes.””
“He was Dad’s closest friend.””
“I know.””
“He raised me.””
“I know.””
“He helped me after Dad died.””
“I know.””
My voice became quiet.
“Then why?””
Maya looked at the screen.
“Because Victor believed your father was destroying everything.””
The door suddenly unlocked.
Everyone turned.
Victor stood there.
No anger.
No fear.
Only sadness.
“I believed your father was weak.””
The room froze.
Victor walked inside.
“I believed he was willing to destroy an empire because he became emotional.””
My hands curled.
“You killed him.””
He looked at me.
“Yes.””
No denial.
No excuse.
Just the truth.
Maya moved forward.
“You never had to hurt him.””
Victor looked at her.
“I had to.””
“Why?””
His eyes moved to me.
“Because your father made a choice.””
He looked almost disappointed.
“He chose Dante.””
I stared.
“What does that mean?””
Victor stepped closer.
“Your father planned to erase the Moretti name.””
He pointed toward the files.
“He planned to expose everyone.””
A pause.
“And he planned to send you away.””
I said nothing.
Victor’s voice lowered.
“But I knew something your father didn’t.””
“What?””
He looked at Elena’s empty chair in the room.
“Dante would never leave his family.””
The lights flickered.
Victor smiled sadly.
“That was your father’s mistake.””
He looked at me.
“He loved you.””
A pause.
“And I knew love would always make you weak.””
The words hung in the air.
Then Maya suddenly looked at the doorway.
Her face changed.
“What?””
I turned.
She whispered:
“No…”
“What is it?””
She looked terrified.
“Dante.””
I followed her gaze.
A figure stood outside the basement entrance.
Someone none of us expected.
Someone who should have been nowhere near this place.
Elena.
But she wasn’t crying.
She wasn’t afraid.
She was holding the missing page from the file.
And on that page was the name everyone had been hiding.
She looked at me.
And said:
“I’m sorry, Dante.””
A pause.
“Dad never wanted you to know the truth about me.””
She lifted the page.
“Because I wasn’t the victim.””
May you like
The room went silent.
“I was the reason he died.””
