Chapter 4: The Voice Beneath Oak Ridge
The message from Maya stayed on my screen.
Five words.
Five words that felt heavier than any weapon I had ever held.
*Dante, don’t trust Elena.*
I stared at them until the letters blurred.
Because there were only two possibilities.
Either someone was using Maya’s name to destroy my family.
Or Maya had truly sent that message.
And if she had…
Then the question I had spent the last hour avoiding became impossible to ignore.
What did Elena know?
The car engine continued running.
Rain slid down the windows.
The abandoned Oak Ridge construction site stood ahead of me like a forgotten city.
Cranes reached into the darkness.
Half-built buildings disappeared into the storm.
A place where people came to build something new.
A place where someone had decided to bury old secrets.
“Boss?””
My driver looked at me through the mirror.
I folded the phone and put it away.
“Stay here.””
His expression changed immediately.
“You’re serious?””
“Yes.””
“Dante, that’s exactly what they want.””
I opened the door.
“I know.””
The rain hit my face instantly.
Cold.
Sharp.
Awake.
I walked toward the entrance alone.
Every step felt deliberate.
Every shadow felt like it was watching.
Because it was.
Marcus Vale wanted me here.
The question was why.
The gate was open.
That bothered me more than a locked gate would have.
A trap always wanted you to believe you had a choice.
Inside the construction site, everything was abandoned.
Broken tools.
Stacks of old materials.
Empty rooms where walls had never been finished.
I followed the coordinates from the message until I reached the center of the property.
A large concrete structure stood in front of me.
The basement entrance.
The place where Elena said Maya had been kept.
I reached for the door.
Then stopped.
A small symbol had been carved into the metal.
The same symbol from the grave marker.
The same symbol from Maya’s notebook.
A circle.
A line through the center.
Three small marks underneath.
I touched it.
And suddenly I remembered.
I was eight years old.
Maya was fifteen.
She was sitting at the kitchen table drawing in a notebook.
I asked her what she was making.
She quickly closed it.
“Nothing.””
“You’re a terrible liar.””
She smiled.
“You’re a terrible detective.””
I laughed.
Then she tapped the notebook.
“Some things are better left hidden, Dante.””
I thought she was joking.
She wasn’t.
The basement door opened before I touched it.
I stepped back.
A voice came from inside.
“You took longer than I expected.””
My hand moved toward my weapon.
A man stepped into the light.
Not Marcus.
Not Adrian.
Someone else.
Older.
Gray hair.
Expensive coat.
A face I hadn’t seen in twenty years.
But remembered instantly.
My body went completely still.
Because I knew him.
Everyone in my family knew him.
“Impossible.””
The man looked at me sadly.
“Hello, Dante.””
My fingers tightened.
“Victor.””
Victor Moretti.
My father’s closest friend.
The man who stood beside my family at the funeral.
The man who told me, at sixteen years old, that I needed to become stronger.
The man who helped me take control after my father died.
The man I trusted more than anyone.
He stepped closer.
“I knew you would come.””
I stared at him.
“You’re alive.””
A strange smile crossed his face.
“I was never dead.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
Because everyone thought Victor died six months after my father.
A car explosion.
No body recovered.
Just a burned vehicle and a missing man.
“How?””
He looked toward the darkness behind him.
“Because people like us don’t always die.””
He paused.
“Sometimes we disappear.””
My anger finally moved.
“You knew.””
Victor looked at me.
“Knew what?””
“You knew about Maya.””
His face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“You found her.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You knew where she was.””
Silence.
That was my answer.
“You let me search for her.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
I laughed.
It wasn’t a happy sound.
“Protect me?””
I pointed around us.
“You let my sister get kidnapped.””
“I saved her life.””
My expression hardened.
“What?””
Victor looked toward the basement.
“She isn’t the victim you think she is.””
My chest tightened.
“Careful.””
“I’m telling you the truth.””
“The truth is becoming a convenient excuse for everyone tonight.””
Victor sighed.
“You sound like your father.””
I froze.
“Don’t.””
“He was stubborn too.””
“Don’t talk about him.””
“He trusted the wrong people.””
The words hit something inside me.
“You mean Marcus?””
Victor didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I walked past him into the basement.
The air below was colder.
The smell was different.
Not abandoned.
Recently used.
Someone had been here.
There were chairs.
Cameras.
Tables.
But no blood.
No signs of a struggle.
That bothered me.
“Where is Maya?””
Victor followed slowly.
“She left.””
My head turned.
“What?””
“She escaped.””
“When?””
“Two days ago.””
I stared at him.
“Then why did everyone think she was dead?””
“Because Maya wanted them to.””
My mind raced.
Everything felt like a puzzle where every piece created a new question.
“Why?””
Victor looked at me.
“Because someone was hunting her.””
“Marcus?””
“No.””
The answer came instantly.
“Someone worse.””
I stepped closer.
“Who?””
Victor hesitated.
Then said:
“The person who killed your father.””
The room became silent.
For twenty years, I had carried my father’s death like a scar.
Now someone was telling me the wound had never closed.
“Who killed him?””
Victor looked away.
“I don’t know.””
I almost laughed.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I know who ordered it.””
My expression changed.
“Who?””
Victor looked at the floor.
“Someone inside the Moretti family.””
Again.
The same accusation.
The same poison.
I wanted to reject it.
I wanted to believe everyone was lying.
But every path kept leading back home.
My phone vibrated.
I looked down.
A message.
From Elena.
My heart stopped.
*Dante, please come back.*
Another message appeared.
*I need to tell you what Maya made me promise.*
Then another.
*But don’t tell anyone I contacted you.*
I stared at the screen.
Victor watched my face.
“What happened?””
I locked the phone.
“Nothing.””
He knew I was lying.
So did I.
Because Elena wasn’t just hiding something.
She was afraid.
And fear had a reason.
I turned toward the exit.
“I’m done listening.””
Victor stepped forward.
“Dante.””
I stopped.
“When you see Maya again…”
I looked back.
“What?””
His voice lowered.
“Ask her why she kept the original file.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What file?””
“The one your father died protecting.””
I walked closer.
“What file?””
Victor looked directly at me.
“The file that proves who betrayed your family.””
Before I could answer, every light in the basement shut off.
Complete darkness.
A second later, a projector turned on.
The screen at the end of the room flickered.
A video appeared.
Maya.
Alive.
Sitting in a chair.
Her face bruised.
Her eyes exhausted.
But alive.
My breath caught.
“Dante.””
Her voice came through the speakers.
I stepped closer.
The video continued.
“If you’re seeing this, it means they finally brought you into this.””
She looked directly at the camera.
“I’m sorry.””
My hands curled into fists.
Because I had waited weeks to hear her voice.
And now she sounded like she was saying goodbye.
“Maya…”
On the screen, she took a shaky breath.
“Dante, there’s something you need to know.””
The video glitched.
Then she said the words that froze my blood.
“Elena is not the person you think she is.””
The screen went black.
May you like
And beneath the silence, Victor whispered:
“Now you understand why Maya told you not to trust her.””
