Chapter 5: The Sister Who Remembered Everything

The screen went black.

But Maya’s voice stayed.

*Elena is not the person you think she is.*

The words repeated in my head.

Not because I believed them.

Because I didn’t.

That was the problem.

For twenty years, I had protected Elena from everything.

From the violence surrounding our family.

From the enemies who wanted revenge.

From the truth about the world we lived in.

She was my little sister.

The last piece of innocence our family had left.

The idea that she could be connected to the destruction of everything we loved felt impossible.

But impossible had become a word I no longer trusted.

I looked at Victor.

He was watching me carefully.

Waiting for my reaction.

Waiting for anger.

Waiting for me to break.

He didn’t know me as well as he thought.

“Where is the recording?””

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

Victor frowned.

“You’re not going to ask about Elena?””

“I already know what you want me to do.””

His expression hardened.

“And what is that?””

“Turn against my family.””

The basement went silent.

Victor looked away.

“Dante…”

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You appeared after twenty years.””

I pointed toward the empty screen.

“You show me a video from Maya.””

Then I looked directly into his eyes.

“And suddenly you’re the only person telling me the truth?””

His jaw tightened.

“I’m trying to save you.””

“Everyone says that.””

I walked toward the exit.

“Everyone says they’re saving me right before they hurt me.””

Victor followed.

“You’re making a mistake.””

I stopped.

“Maybe.””

I turned back.

“But I’ve survived this long because I learned one thing.””

“What?””

“Never trust the person who needs you to trust them.””

For the first time, Victor looked afraid.

Not angry.

Afraid.

And that told me more than his words ever could.

I left the basement.

The rain had stopped.

But the city felt colder than before.

When I reached my car, Nico was already standing outside.

He looked at my face.

He didn’t ask what happened.

He knew better.

“What did you find?””

I opened the door.

“Nothing.””

Nico raised an eyebrow.

“You’re a terrible liar.””

The words almost made me smile.

Almost.

Because those were Maya’s words.

I got into the car.

“Nico.””

“Yes?””

“Find everything you can about Victor Moretti.””

His expression changed.

“Victor?””

I nodded.

“Quietly.””

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because if Victor is involved, everyone will notice.””

I looked out the window.

“Then make sure nobody notices.””

Nico studied me.

Then nodded.

“Understood.””

The drive back was silent.

But my mind was louder than ever.

Maya.

Elena.

My father.

Victor.

Marcus Vale.

Every person I trusted was connected to a secret.

And every secret led back to the same night.

The night my father died.

When I arrived home, the first thing I saw was Elena.

She was sitting in the living room.

Waiting.

She looked exhausted.

Like she hadn’t moved since I left.

The moment she saw me, she stood.

“Dante.””

I closed the door behind me.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then she walked closer.

“You saw it.””

I froze.

“How did you know?””

Her eyes dropped.

“Because Maya wanted you to.””

My chest tightened.

“You knew?””

Elena nodded.

“She told me everything.””

I felt something crack inside.

“Everything?””

She wiped away tears.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Her voice broke.

“Because she made me promise.””

I stared at her.

“Maya made you promise to lie to me?””

“No.””

Elena shook her head.

“She made me promise to keep you alive.””

The answer caught me off guard.

I said nothing.

She continued.

“Dante, you don’t understand what happened.””

“Then explain.””

She sat down slowly.

“I was nine years old when Dad died.””

I remained standing.

“I know.””

“No.””

She looked up.

“You know what everyone told you.””

Her voice became softer.

“You don’t know what I saw.””

The room felt smaller.

“Tell me.””

Elena looked toward the window.

“I woke up because I heard shouting.””

A pause.

“Dad was arguing with someone.””

“Who?””

She shook her head.

“I couldn’t see his face.””

“Then how do you know?””

“Because Dad said his name.””

My heart slowed.

“What name?””

Elena looked at me.

“Marcus.””

The room went quiet.

I expected to feel anger.

Instead, I felt something worse.

Confirmation.

“Marcus Vale was there?””

She nodded.

“He was fighting with Dad.””

“What about Victor?””

Her face changed.

I noticed.

“Elena.””

She looked down.

“He was there too.””

My hands tightened.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying they were all there.””

The words felt impossible.

“My father.””

“Marcus.””

“Victor.””

“And…”

She stopped.

“Who?””

Her eyes filled with fear.

“Me.””

I stared at her.

“You?””

She nodded.

“I saw everything.””

I walked closer.

“Elena, what happened that night?””

She closed her eyes.

“Dad found out about the docks.””

The same thing.

Again.

“The same thing Maya found?””

“Yes.””

“What was in the files?””

“I don’t know.””

“You said Maya told you everything.””

“She told me what I needed to know.””

I looked at her.

“And what was that?””

“That Dad wasn’t killed because of business.””

She swallowed.

“He was killed because he wanted to expose them.””

I sat across from her.

For the first time in years, I felt sixteen again.

A kid searching for answers.

A son trying to understand why his father was gone.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Elena’s face collapsed.

“Because Maya showed me something.””

“What?””

“She showed me a video.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Of what?””

“Of you.””

I frowned.

“Me?””

She nodded.

“You don’t remember.””

“Remember what?””

Elena looked terrified.

“The night Dad died, you weren’t supposed to be home.””

I froze.

“What?””

“You came back early.””

I remembered.

I had forgotten.

That night, I was supposed to sleep at a friend’s house.

But I came home because I felt something was wrong.

Something had pulled me back.

Something I never understood.

“What does that have to do with anything?””

Elena whispered:

“Because someone tried to kill you too.””

The room went silent.

I stared at her.

“What?””

She nodded.

“Maya found you outside.””

My breathing changed.

“I was outside?””

“Yes.””

“She carried you.””

The memory came back in pieces.

Rain.

Cold pavement.

Maya crying.

My father’s voice somewhere far away.

“I thought…”

Elena wiped her tears.

“You thought you just woke up after the attack.””

I looked at her.

“But?””

“But Maya told me the truth.””

She reached for my hand.

“You were the target.””

I couldn’t speak.

For twenty years, I believed my father was the victim.

But maybe he wasn’t.

Maybe he was only the person standing between them and me.

My phone suddenly vibrated.

Both of us looked.

Unknown number.

A video.

I opened it.

The footage showed an empty room.

Then a person walked into frame.

Maya.

Alive.

She looked directly at the camera.

“Dante.””

My heart stopped.

“I know you’re angry.””

She took a breath.

“But if Elena told you the truth…”

She looked behind her.

Terrified.

“…then you know why I disappeared.””

A sound came from somewhere near her.

Someone approaching.

Maya turned.

“Wait—”

The video shook.

A man’s voice shouted.

“Maya!””

Then the screen went black.

One final message appeared.

Not from Maya.

From Marcus Vale.

*Now ask yourself the real question, Dante.*

A second message followed.

*Who saved you that night?*

I stared at the screen.

Because suddenly the answer I had believed my entire life no longer existed.

And the most terrifying possibility entered my mind.

May you like

Maybe Maya wasn’t hiding the truth from me.

Maybe she was hiding me from it.
