Chapter 7: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

The stranger’s words didn’t make sense.

Not at first.

They floated through the room like a sentence spoken in another language.

“My daughter.””

I looked at Lily’s crib.

Then at Vanessa.

Then at Maria.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

“What did you just say?”” I asked.

The man stepped inside and slowly closed the door behind him.

“I said your daughter’s biological mother isn’t who you think she is.””

My body went cold.

“Get out.””

The words came from Vanessa.

Not me.

She stepped forward, her face twisted with fear.

“You have no right to come here.””

The man looked at her.

“Actually, Vanessa, I have every right.””

My eyes snapped toward him.

“You know my wife?””

He looked at me.

“Yes.””

“How?””

Before he could answer, Maria moved between us.

“Ethan, please.””

I stared at her.

“Please what?””

Her eyes were full of panic.

“Let me explain.””

I laughed quietly.

“Explain?””

I looked around the room.

“That word has lost all meaning tonight.””

The man lowered his head.

“My name is Daniel Brooks.””

I didn’t care who he was.

I cared about one thing.

My daughter.

“What does any of this have to do with Lily?””

Daniel looked toward the crib.

“Everything.””

I immediately stepped closer.

“No.””

My voice became sharp.

“You don’t go near her.””

He stopped.

“I’m not here to hurt her.””

“Then why are you here?””

Daniel looked at Maria.

“Because she finally ran out of time.””

Maria closed her eyes.

“Daniel.””

His expression softened slightly.

“You should have told him years ago.””

Years.

That word caught my attention.

“Years?””

I looked at Maria.

“What does he mean?””

Maria didn’t answer.

Vanessa spoke.

“Ethan, don’t listen to him.””

I turned.

“You knew about him?””

Her silence was immediate.

My stomach dropped.

“Vanessa.””

She shook her head.

“Not like this.””

“What does that mean?””

She looked at Daniel.

Then at Maria.

“I knew there were things I didn’t understand.””

I stared.

“How long have you known?””

She whispered,

“Since before Lily was born.””

The room tilted.

I took a step back.

“No.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t know everything.””

“But you knew something.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

The betrayal felt different this time.

Not explosive.

Not angry.

Just empty.

Like a room after someone leaves.

“Everyone knew.””

My voice cracked.

“Everyone except me.””

Maria stepped closer.

“Ethan—”

“No.””

I looked at her.

“Don’t.””

She stopped.

Daniel watched silently.

Almost sadly.

“Now you understand.””

I looked at him.

“Understand what?””

“That you were the only person in this family who didn’t know the truth.””

I hated that he was right.

I hated that every secret led to another.

“Start talking.””

Daniel nodded.

“Seven months ago, Lily was born.””

I interrupted.

“I know when my daughter was born.””

He ignored the anger in my voice.

“But you don’t know what happened before that.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What happened?””

Daniel looked at Maria.

“She was pregnant.””

The room froze.

I looked at Maria.

“What?””

Maria’s face crumpled.

“Ethan…”

“No.””

I stepped away.

“No, don’t say my name.””

Daniel continued.

“Maria had a daughter.””

I stared.

“What does that have to do with Lily?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“She was told her baby didn’t survive.””

Vanessa went pale.

“What?””

Maria covered her mouth.

“I didn’t want you to know this way.””

I looked at Maria.

“Know what?””

Her tears fell.

“That I had a daughter before.””

Daniel nodded.

“And she was taken from her.””

My heart pounded.

“Taken?””

Maria looked at Daniel.

“Stop.””

But he continued.

“Twenty-seven years ago, Maria’s baby was declared dead shortly after birth.””

I looked at him.

“And?””

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“And she was wrong.””

The room became silent.

Maria whispered,

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“She was alive.””

Maria shook her head.

“No.””

“She was adopted through a private arrangement.””

My eyes moved between them.

“What are you saying?””

Daniel looked toward Lily’s crib.

“I’m saying Maria spent years searching for the child she lost.””

I felt a chill.

“And she found her?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Vanessa.

Then Maria.

Then Lily.

The pieces started forming.

Slowly.

Terrifyingly.

“No.””

Maria started crying.

“I never wanted this.””

“What?””

She looked at me.

“I never wanted to become part of your family.””

“Then why did you?””

“Because of Patricia.””

My jaw tightened.

Again.

Patricia.

“She knew?””

Maria nodded.

“She found out the truth.””

“What truth?””

Maria looked at Vanessa.

Then whispered:

“Lily was connected to my daughter.””

The room stopped.

I couldn’t speak.

Vanessa looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel answered.

“It means your mother knew something was wrong with Lily’s birth records.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“What records?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Daniel pulled a folder from his coat.

My heart sank.

Not another document.

Not another hidden file.

He handed it to me.

I didn’t take it.

“What is that?””

“Proof.””

“Of what?””

“That the hospital records were changed.””

The words hit harder than anything else.

“Changed how?””

Daniel looked at Maria.

“She wasn’t supposed to be given up.””

Maria’s voice broke.

“My daughter…”

She couldn’t finish.

I finally took the folder.

My hands felt numb.

Inside were copies.

Hospital forms.

Birth records.

Adoption documents.

I scanned the pages.

Then I saw a name.

A name that made my entire body freeze.

Because it wasn’t Maria’s.

It wasn’t Vanessa’s.

It was someone I knew.

Someone who had been standing in my home.

Someone who had been holding Lily.

I looked up.

“Vanessa.””

She looked terrified.

“What?””

I held up the paper.

“Why is your name on this adoption document?””

Her face went completely blank.

“No.””

I stared.

“Why does it say you were listed as the emergency contact for Maria’s daughter?””

Vanessa backed away.

“I don’t know.””

“You were there?””

“No.””

“Then explain it.””

“I can’t.””

Maria looked at Vanessa.

“You knew.””

Vanessa shook her head rapidly.

“I didn’t.””

“You knew my daughter existed.””

“No!””

“You knew where she was.””

“I didn’t!””

Her scream filled the room.

Lily woke up crying.

The sound broke everyone.

I immediately went to the crib.

I picked her up.

My daughter.

My little girl.

The only innocent person in the room.

I turned away from the chaos.

But then Daniel said something that stopped me.

“Ethan.””

I looked at him.

“There’s one more thing.””

I didn’t want to hear it.

But I knew I had to.

“What?””

Daniel looked at Lily.

“The reason Patricia hired Maria wasn’t to watch Vanessa.””

I frowned.

“Then why?””

His answer came quietly.

“She wanted Maria close because she knew the truth would eventually come out.””

I stared.

“What truth?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

Then at Maria.

Then at me.

“That Lily wasn’t born seven months ago.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

Daniel stepped closer.

“The baby you brought home from the hospital…”

May you like

He paused.

“Wasn’t the baby Vanessa gave birth to.””
