Chapter 5: The Woman Behind the Camera

For several seconds, I couldn’t process what I had just heard.

Maria wasn’t just our housekeeper.

Patricia hired her.

To watch Vanessa.

I looked at Maria.

She didn’t deny it.

That hurt more than the accusation itself.

Because after everything that happened tonight, after she had stood there holding Lily, after she had begged me to check the camera, I thought she was the one person who had been completely honest with me.

But now there was another secret.

Another person who had been living inside my home while I knew nothing.

“Maria,” I said slowly.

She looked up.

Her eyes were already filled with regret.

“Mr. Carter…”

“No.””

I raised my hand.

“Don’t call me that.””

Her expression fell.

“Ethan.””

I stared at her.

“Is it true?””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

Vanessa let out a bitter laugh.

“So now you know.””

I turned toward her.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa wiped her tears.

“You finally see that everyone has been lying to you.””

Her words cut deeper because they were true.

Everyone had been hiding something.

My wife.

My mother-in-law.

Maria.

Maybe even Dr. Reed.

I felt like I was standing in the middle of a room where every wall had a hidden door.

And I was the only person who didn’t know where they led.

I looked back at Maria.

“Why?””

She took a breath.

“Because your mother-in-law asked me to.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“It’s the truth.””

“No.””

My voice sharpened.

“That’s a reason. Not an explanation.””

Maria nodded slowly.

“You’re right.””

She looked toward Lily.

“I should have told you.””

“Why didn’t you?””

Her eyes became glassy.

“Because I was afraid.””

I almost laughed.

Another person.

Another secret.

Another excuse.

“Everyone is afraid.””

I shook my head.

“But somehow I’m always the last person to know.””

Nobody responded.

Maria stepped closer.

“I never wanted to spy on your family.””

“But you did.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“Because Patricia believed her daughter was getting worse.””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“My mother always thought I was weak.””

Maria didn’t answer.

That silence told me everything.

“Maria,” I said, “what exactly did Patricia ask you to do?””

Maria hesitated.

“Watch.””

“Watch what?””

“Watch Vanessa.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Explain.””

“She was worried after Lily was born.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“She thought Vanessa was not herself.””

Vanessa looked away.

Maria continued.

“She wanted proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That Vanessa needed help.””

I stared.

“Help?””

Maria nodded.

“Patricia believed something was wrong.””

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“She wanted evidence.””

Everyone looked at her.

Her voice was shaking.

“She didn’t want to help me.””

Maria looked down.

“She did both.””

“No.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with anger.

“She wanted something she could use against me.””

The room became quiet.

I looked between them.

“Did Patricia threaten you?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

“What did she say?””

Vanessa hugged herself.

“She told me if I didn’t listen to her, she would make sure Ethan found out everything.””

I frowned.

“Everything?””

She nodded.

“My breakdowns. My therapy appointments. My fears.””

Her voice cracked.

“She said you would never look at me the same way.””

I looked at Vanessa.

For the first time, I understood why she had hidden so much.

Not because she didn’t trust me.

Because someone had convinced her she couldn’t.

But then I remembered Lily crying.

And I remembered the lie.

Understanding someone’s pain didn’t erase what they did.

“What happened tonight?”” I asked.

Vanessa looked down.

“I was exhausted.””

“That’s not enough.””

“I know.””

She swallowed.

“I had been awake almost all night.””

“Why?””

“Lily wouldn’t sleep.””

I glanced at my daughter.

Maria spoke quietly.

“She had a fever earlier.””

I looked at her.

“A fever?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Just a small one.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because you had that presentation.””

I stared at her.

“My daughter had a fever, and you didn’t tell me?””

“I didn’t want to distract you.””

I ran a hand over my face.

The more I learned, the less I knew.

“You don’t protect a family by keeping things from them.””

Vanessa looked like she wanted to answer.

But she couldn’t.

Then Maria spoke.

“There’s something else.””

I closed my eyes briefly.

Of course there was.

“What?””

Maria reached into her pocket.

She pulled out her phone.

“I recorded something.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“Maria.””

The fear in her voice was different.

Not anger.

Fear.

“What did you record?”” I asked.

Maria unlocked her phone.

“A conversation.””

“With who?””

She looked at Vanessa.

“Mrs. Carter.””

Vanessa froze.

“When?””

Maria looked at me.

“Two weeks ago.””

I stared.

“Why?””

“Because I heard something that scared me.””

She pressed a button.

A recording appeared.

The date was visible.

Two weeks earlier.

Maria hesitated.

“I should have shown you then.””

“Play it.””

She pressed the screen.

At first, there was only background noise.

Then Vanessa’s voice.

Quiet.

Tired.

“I can’t do this anymore.””

My chest tightened.

Maria’s voice followed.

“What do you mean?””

Vanessa answered.

“I mean I’m failing.””

“You’re not failing.””

“I look at Lily and I feel like she deserves someone better.””

I closed my eyes.

Those words hurt.

Not because they made me angry.

Because they sounded like a mother who was drowning.

Then Vanessa’s voice changed.

“I’m scared of myself.””

The room went silent.

Maria looked at me.

The recording continued.

“You need to tell Ethan.””

“No.””

“Vanessa—”

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because if Ethan knows, he’ll leave.””

My heart clenched.

Then Maria asked,

“Do you really believe that?””

A long pause.

Then Vanessa whispered,

“I don’t know.””

The recording stopped.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Vanessa.

She was crying silently.

“I didn’t want you to leave.””

I swallowed.

“Vanessa…”

“I know what I did tonight was wrong.””

Her voice broke.

“I know I hurt Lily.””

She wiped her face.

“But I need you to understand something.””

I waited.

“I wasn’t trying to hurt her.””

The sentence hung there.

I wanted to believe it.

I wanted to.

But there was still one thing I couldn’t ignore.

“Then why did you blame Maria?””

Vanessa looked at me.

And for the first time, she answered without hesitation.

“Because my mother told me to.””

The room froze.

Maria’s eyes widened.

“What?””

Vanessa looked down.

“She called me after it happened.””

“When?””

“Right after Lily fell.””

My heart started pounding.

“What did she say?””

Vanessa’s hands trembled.

“She told me I needed to protect myself.””

I stared.

“Protect yourself?””

“She said if Ethan saw the footage, I would lose everything.””

Maria whispered,

“She knew about the camera.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

Patricia had known.

She had known before I even arrived.

She had known enough to call Vanessa.

She had known enough to create a story.

I grabbed my phone.

I needed answers.

I called Patricia.

She answered after one ring.

“Ethan.””

Her voice was calm again.

Too calm.

“Why did you tell Vanessa to blame Maria?””

Silence.

Then:

“Because I was trying to save my daughter.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“From what?””

Patricia didn’t answer.

Instead, she asked,

“Did Maria show you the recording?””

My blood ran cold.

“How did you know about that?””

Another pause.

Then Patricia said something that made my entire body tense.

“Because Maria wasn’t only watching Vanessa.””

I gripped the phone.

“What does that mean?””

Her voice lowered.

“She was watching you too.””

I looked at Maria.

Her face turned pale.

“No,” Maria whispered.

But Patricia continued.

“And Ethan…”

A pause.

“She has been hiding the biggest secret of all.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“What secret?””

Patricia’s final words came softly.

“The night Lily was born…”

Silence.

May you like

Then:

“Maria was the reason Vanessa almost died.””
