Chapter 6: The Truth About That Night
“The night Lily was born… Maria was the reason Vanessa almost died.””
Patricia’s words echoed through the phone.
For a moment, everything around me disappeared.
The living room.
The camera.
The arguments.
Even the sound of Lily breathing softly against my chest.
All I heard was that sentence.
Maria.
The woman I trusted.
The woman who had cared for my daughter.
The woman who had just revealed my wife’s darkest moments.
Was the reason my wife almost died?
I slowly lowered the phone.
Maria was staring at me.
Her face had gone completely pale.
“Ethan,” she whispered.
I held up my hand.
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
“No one says another word until I understand what is happening.””
Vanessa looked at Maria.
Not with anger.
Not with hatred.
With confusion.
“You…”
She swallowed.
“You were there?””
Maria closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The answer landed like a punch.
Vanessa took a step back.
“I thought you were just a nurse.””
Maria looked at her.
“I was.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
Maria looked at me.
“I wasn’t always your housekeeper.””
The room became silent.
I gently placed Lily in her crib.
Every movement felt careful.
Protective.
Like if I moved too quickly, another piece of my life would break.
I returned to the living room.
“Start from the beginning.””
Maria nodded.
“I was a maternity nurse at Lenox Hill Hospital.””
The name hit me.
The hospital where Lily was born.
“You worked there?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
She looked down.
“Because Patricia asked me not to.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
Again.
Patricia.
Always Patricia.
“She knew you?””
Maria nodded.
“She hired me privately after Lily was born.””
Vanessa looked shocked.
“My mother hired you?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Maria hesitated.
“To watch over you.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“So my mother put a stranger in my house?””
Maria’s eyes filled with guilt.
“She was worried.””
“She was controlling.””
Maria didn’t argue.
That told me more than words could.
I looked at Maria.
“What happened at the hospital?””
Maria took a deep breath.
“It was a difficult delivery.””
I remembered.
The fear.
The emergency alarms.
The doctors rushing around.
The helplessness.
“Yes,” I said.
“Vanessa lost a lot of blood.””
My stomach tightened.
“I know.””
“No,” Maria said softly.
“You know what the doctors told you.””
She looked at me.
“You don’t know what happened after.””
I felt a chill.
“What happened?””
Maria looked at Vanessa.
“After Lily was born, Mrs. Carter had a severe emotional crash.””
Vanessa’s eyes lowered.
“I remember.””
Maria nodded.
“She was scared.””
“Scared of what?””
Maria answered quietly.
“Everything.””
The room went still.
“She was convinced something bad would happen to Lily.””
I remembered those first weeks.
Vanessa checking the locks repeatedly.
Waking up every hour.
Calling the pediatrician over tiny things.
I thought she was just being a new mother.
“She wasn’t sleeping,” Maria continued.
“She wasn’t eating.””
Vanessa whispered,
“I was trying.””
Maria nodded.
“I know.””
Then Maria looked at me.
“But there was one night.””
My chest tightened.
“What night?””
“The night before we left the hospital.””
Vanessa looked confused.
“What are you talking about?””
Maria’s expression changed.
“That was the night you don’t remember.””
Vanessa froze.
“I don’t remember?””
“No.””
I looked between them.
“Why?””
Maria swallowed.
“Because you were sedated.””
I frowned.
“Sedated?””
Maria nodded.
“After your panic attack.””
Vanessa touched her forehead.
“I had a panic attack?””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
Maria looked at her.
“You tried to leave the hospital with Lily.””
The words shocked everyone.
Vanessa stared.
“No.””
“You were confused.””
“No.””
“You kept saying you needed to take her somewhere safe.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don’t remember that.””
“I know.””
I looked at Maria.
“And what did you do?””
Maria hesitated.
“I stopped you.””
“How?””
Maria looked away.
“I grabbed Lily.””
The room went silent.
Vanessa’s face changed.
“That’s what she meant.””
“What?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“The reason my mother said Maria almost killed me.””
I turned.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“My mother told me Maria took Lily away from me.””
Maria looked devastated.
“That’s not what happened.””
“Then what happened?””
Maria took a shaky breath.
“You were standing near the hospital stairwell.””
I felt my heart race.
“You were holding Lily.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“I…”
“You were crying.””
Maria’s voice softened.
“You said you couldn’t do it anymore.””
The words hurt.
Because I knew what they meant.
Vanessa wasn’t talking about Lily.
She was talking about herself.
“You stepped forward,” Maria continued.
“And I grabbed the baby.””
Silence.
“I saved Lily.””
Vanessa looked down.
“And I thought you were taking her away from me.””
Maria shook her head.
“No.””
“But my mother told me you were trying to prove I was unstable.””
Maria looked at me.
“That’s when Patricia started building her story.””
I felt anger rising.
“Why?””
Nobody answered.
“Why would she do that?””
Maria looked at Vanessa.
“Because she was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“That Vanessa would tell the truth.””
I frowned.
“What truth?””
Maria’s expression hardened.
“The truth that Patricia had been pressuring her daughter for years.””
Vanessa looked up.
“What?””
Maria continued.
“Your mother never believed you were strong enough.””
“That’s not true.””
“It is.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“She loved me.””
Maria looked sad.
“She loved the version of you she could control.””
The words cut.
Vanessa didn’t respond.
Because maybe a part of her knew they were true.
My phone rang.
I looked down.
Patricia.
Again.
I answered.
“What do you want?””
Her voice was calm.
“Ethan, I know Maria is telling you things.””
I looked at Maria.
“She’s telling me the truth.””
“No.””
Patricia’s voice sharpened.
“She is manipulating you.””
“Why?””
“Because she knows she made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
Silence.
Then Patricia said,
“Ask her why she left the hospital the same night Lily was born.””
I looked at Maria.
Maria’s expression changed.
“You left?””
Maria closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She didn’t answer.
I turned back to the phone.
“Patricia, what are you implying?””
“I’m saying you don’t know Maria.””
My grip tightened.
“Then tell me.””
Patricia lowered her voice.
“She had a reason for staying close to your family.””
My heart pounded.
“What reason?””
“She wasn’t just watching Vanessa.””
Another pause.
“She was looking for someone.””
I stared at Maria.
“Who?””
Patricia’s answer came slowly.
“Her daughter.””
The room froze.
Maria’s face turned white.
Vanessa whispered,
“What?””
Patricia continued.
“Ethan, ask Maria why she became obsessed with Lily.””
I looked at Maria.
“Is it true?””
Maria didn’t speak.
“Maria.””
Finally, she whispered:
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“Why?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because Lily…”
She stopped.
The front door suddenly slammed open.
Everyone turned.
A man stood in the doorway.
I didn’t recognize him.
But Maria did.
She stepped backward.
“No.””
The man looked at her.
“Maria.””
Her face drained of color.
“Please don’t.””
The man’s eyes moved to Lily’s crib.
Then back to Maria.
And he said the words that changed everything.
“I know you found her.””
I froze.
“Found who?””
The man looked directly at me.
“My daughter.””
Silence.
May you like
Then he said:
“Your daughter’s biological mother isn’t who you think she is.””
