Chapter 9

The protective order hearing happened three days later.

Vanessa appeared in court wearing a soft beige dress and no makeup.

She looked like the wronged wife.

The exhausted caregiver.

The victim of a meddling mother-in-law.

Then Alicia played Mrs. Alvarez’s videos.

The courtroom changed.

Vanessa’s face tightened as her own voice filled the room.

You can come in when you remember whose house this is.

Please. I need my medicine.

She’ll be gone soon. Michael won’t fight me once the house is mine.

The judge’s expression hardened.

Vanessa’s lawyer tried to argue context.

Alicia replied, “The context is a seventy-year-old woman locked in a closet asking for heart medication.”

The protective order was granted.

Vanessa could not contact my mother.

Could not come near James’s house.

Could not enter our home without court permission.

Could not remove property.

Could not access Mom’s medical information.

Then the judge looked at me.

“Mr. Carter, your mother’s safety requires more than your regret.”

I nodded.

“Yes, Your Honor.”

Because she was right.
