Chapter 11

Mom moved in with James during the legal process.

His house was noisy.

Three kids.

A dog.

A television always too loud.

Mom loved it.

At first, she asked permission for everything.

“Can I sit here?”

“Can I use this mug?”

“Is it okay if I nap?”

James’s wife, Laura, cried in the pantry after hearing that last one.

Then she made a rule.

“No one asks permission to rest in this house.”

Mom smiled politely.

But it took weeks before she believed it.

Her blood pressure improved.

Her hands healed.

She started wearing the scarf I had bought that day.

The one meant as a surprise.

The one I gave her at the hospital with an apology folded inside.

She kept both.
