Chapter 12

The trial took eight months.
During that time, I rebuilt my relationship with my mother from a place of honesty.
Not comfort.
Honesty.
She told me things I did not want to hear.
How Vanessa mocked her accent when I was gone.
How Vanessa made her eat alone.
How she took Mom’s phone and deleted missed calls from me.
How Mom had tried to tell me once, but I interrupted because I was late for a call.
I remembered that day.
I had said, “Mom, I’ll call you back.”
I never did.
That memory will sit with me forever.
Not to destroy me.
To teach me.
