Chapter 4: The Woman From His Past
Two days later, I left the hospital with a brace around my ribs and a truth I could no longer ignore.
Julian wasn’t just a man who made one terrible choice.
He was a man who had spent years hiding choices.
My father took Ethan and me to his house.
The same house where I grew up.
The same place where I had once felt safe.
That first night, I couldn’t sleep.
Every sound made my body react.
A door closing.
A car passing.
A floorboard creaking.
Trauma remembered what the mind tried to forget.
At midnight, my father found me sitting in the kitchen.
“You should be resting.””
I looked at him.
“I’m sorry.””
He frowned.
“For what?””
“For not telling you.””
He sat across from me.
“Evelyn.””
“I thought I could fix him.””
My father’s face softened.
“You were never supposed to fix someone who was hurting you.””
Tears filled my eyes.
“I was embarrassed.””
“Why?””
“Because I thought it meant I failed.””
My father reached across the table.
“You survived.””
The next morning, Detective Harris called.
“There is someone who wants to speak with you.””
“Who?””
A pause.
“Her name is Claire Morgan.””
The name meant nothing.
Until she walked into my father’s house.
She was younger than me.
Maybe early thirties.
She looked nervous.
“I’m sorry.””
Those were her first words.
I stared at her.
“Why are you sorry?””
She looked down.
“Because I should have found you sooner.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
She took a breath.
“Julian did this to me too.””
The room went silent.
Claire told me everything.
The apologies.
The promises.
The isolation.
The moment she realized she wasn’t the problem.
She had saved messages.
Photos.
Records.
Proof.
“I tried to warn people,” she said.
“But no one listened.””
I looked at her.
“I would have listened.””
She gave me a sad smile.
“I know.””
My father stood behind me.
“Why now?””
Claire looked at me.
“Because when I saw the news about your husband…”
Her voice broke.
“I knew I couldn’t stay quiet anymore.””
That afternoon, we met with the detective.
Claire handed over everything.
Julian’s lies.
His threats.
His pattern.
But there was one thing nobody expected.
A missing piece.
A recording.
Claire looked at me.
“I saved this because I knew one day he would do it again.””
Detective Harris pressed play.
Julian’s voice filled the room.
“If you ever tell anyone, I’ll make sure nobody believes you.””
My blood turned cold.
Because I knew that voice.
I had heard those words.
Not exactly.
But enough.
Then another voice appeared.
Mine.
From years ago.
A memory I didn’t even know existed.
And behind my own frightened voice was Julian saying something that made everyone in the room go silent.
Something about me.
May you like
Something about Ethan.
Something I had never known.
