Chapter 3: The Secret Someone Else Knew

The hospital lights were too bright.

That was the first thing I noticed.

Everything in the emergency room felt sharp.

The voices.

The machines.

The footsteps.

The questions.

A nurse wrapped a blanket around me.

“Try to relax.””

I wanted to laugh.

Relax.

That word belonged to people whose lives were still normal.

Mine had changed on a kitchen floor.

My father sat beside my bed.

He hadn’t moved for hours.

Not once.

Ethan was asleep in his arms.

Watching them together broke my heart.

Because I realized my son had spent his entire childhood learning how to survive.

Not how to play.

Not how to dream.

Survive.

A detective entered the room.

“Mrs. Carter?””

I nodded.

“I’m Detective Harris.””

He opened his notebook.

“I need to ask you some questions.””

My father immediately stood.

“I’ll leave.””

“No.””

I grabbed his hand.

“Stay.””

Detective Harris looked at me.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

Because I was done being alone.

The detective looked at his notes.

“Your husband claims this was an accident.””

I stared at him.

“Of course he does.””

“He says you became upset during an argument and fell.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“He pushed me.””

Detective Harris nodded slowly.

“We found evidence supporting your statement.””

My chest tightened.

“What evidence?””

“Your son’s phone call.””

I looked at Ethan.

“He heard everything?””

The detective hesitated.

“He heard enough.””

My father closed his eyes.

That hurt him.

More than anger.

More than revenge.

Because he knew what I knew.

A child should never hear his mother begging for help.

Then the detective placed a small plastic bag on the table.

Inside was my phone.

“Mrs. Carter, before we arrived, your phone received a message.””

My stomach dropped.

“The message was from this number.””

He showed me.

I recognized the last four digits.

My sister’s number.

But that made no sense.

My sister Leah had moved to California three years ago.

She couldn’t have known.

I opened the message.

I read it again.

Evelyn,

I know about Julian.

I know what he did before.

I know what he will do next.

Call me.

My hands started shaking.

“Who sent this?””

Detective Harris looked at me.

“That’s what we’re trying to determine.””

My father took the phone.

“Before?””

The room became colder.

I swallowed.

“What do you mean before?””

Detective Harris looked uncomfortable.

“Your husband may have a history.””

A terrible feeling moved through me.

“What history?””

He opened his notebook.

“Three years ago, Julian was questioned in connection with an incident involving a previous girlfriend.””

My heart stopped.

“Previous girlfriend?””

My father looked at me.

“You never told me about anyone before you.””

Because Julian had always told me the same story.

That he had been unlucky in love.

That women before me were “too dramatic.””

That I was the only person who ever understood him.

Detective Harris continued.

“She refused to file charges.””

My fingers tightened around the blanket.

“Why?””

The detective looked at me.

“She said she was afraid no one would believe her.””

The words hit me like another blow.

Because suddenly I remembered.

All those moments when Julian told me I was too sensitive.

Too emotional.

Too difficult.

He wasn’t changing.

He was repeating himself.

The next morning, Julian came to the hospital.

He walked in carrying flowers.

Of course he did.

A performance.

A picture.

A story.

“Evelyn.””

I looked at him.

He looked exhausted.

Regretful.

Almost human.

But I had finally learned something.

A monster didn’t always look like one.

“I made a mistake,” he whispered.

My father stepped forward.

“Leave.””

Julian ignored him.

“I love you.””

I stared at the flowers.

“Do you?””

His face fell.

“Yes.””

“Then why did you tell me to clean myself up?””

Silence.

His eyes moved away.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

The truth.

“You don’t remember everything you said,” I whispered.

“I was angry.””

“No.””

My voice became stronger.

“You were comfortable.””

That hurt him.

Good.

Julian stepped closer.

“Evelyn, think about our family.””

I looked at Ethan.

Sleeping in the chair.

“Our family?””

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“You almost destroyed it.””

His expression changed.

And then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

For one second, panic crossed his face.

Then he answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

I couldn’t hear the words.

But I saw Julian’s expression.

Fear.

Real fear.

When he hung up, I asked:

“Who was that?””

May you like

He didn’t answer.

And that told me everything.
