Chapter 5

The police seized both phones.
Lauren called it theft.
The officer called it evidence.
I preferred evidence.
Mark called his attorney.
Claire called her sister.
I called no one at first.
Then I called my mother.
She answered with her usual brightness.
“Hi, honey. How was the presentation?”
I stood in the hotel hallway, looking at Lauren’s robe belt hanging crooked over the officer’s arm.
“Mom,” I said. “Something happened.”
By the time I finished, she was already getting her keys.
“I’m coming.”
“You’re four hours away.”
“Then I should start now.”
That was my mother.
Simple.
Certain.
Real.
Claire sat in a chair near the lobby window, staring at nothing.
I sat beside her.
For a long time, we did not speak.
Then she said, “I thought you were ruining my marriage.”
I looked at Mark across the lobby.
He was speaking into his phone, pacing.
“No. He did that part.”
She nodded slowly.
“Lauren helped.”
“Yes.”
“I helped her hurt you.”
I touched my cheek.
“Yes.”
She flinched.
I said, “But you came with proof. You didn’t just whisper behind my back.”
She looked at me.
“I slapped you in front of your coworkers.”
“Yes.”
“I am sorry.”
“I know.”
That did not fix it.
But it mattered.
The first news article published that night.
No names, but enough details.
My company issued a statement saying an incident occurred during a private business meeting and was under investigation.
My boss, Daniel, called me.
“You are on paid leave until this is sorted out.”
My stomach dropped.
“Paid leave?”
“Protective, not disciplinary.”
“That’s what they always say.”
“Hannah,” he said gently, “I saw the evidence. I believe you. But this is now a workplace incident, a legal issue, and possibly identity fraud. You need space from the office circus.”
I closed my eyes.
“Do people think I did it?”
He was silent for one second too long.
“Some people are confused.”
Confused.
A word that can ruin a woman’s life before truth catches up.
Alicia took the phone from me.
“Daniel, send confirmation in writing that Ms. Miller is not under investigation for misconduct and that leave is protective due to being a victim and witness.”
Daniel paused.
Then said, “I’ll send it within ten minutes.”
Alicia handed the phone back.
