Chapter 20

Five years after the meeting, I received notice that Lauren had completed prison time and begun supervised release.

Alicia asked if I wanted updates.

I said only legal ones.

No personal letters.

No apologies.

No memories.

That chapter was closed.

That same week, Claire emailed me.

She was engaged.

Not to Mark.

Obviously.

She wrote:

I wanted you to know I’m happy. I also wanted to say again that the worst day of my life led me to the truth, even though I hate how I found it. I hope yours did too.

I sat with that for a long time.

Then replied:

It did. I hate how we found it. But I’m glad we did.

On the fifth anniversary of the conference room incident, Maya brought cupcakes to my office.

“Happy Not-a-Homewrecker Day,” she said.

I laughed so hard I nearly dropped one.

Daniel passed by and said, “That is not HR-approved.”

Maya said, “Then don’t write it down.”

We ate cupcakes anyway.

Later, alone in the conference room, I looked at the long table.

I remembered the slap.

The papers.

My own face printed beside words I never wrote.

Lauren’s cheerful voice on speaker.

Don’t overreact.

But I had overreacted.

Thank God.

I caught a raised hand.

I slapped back.

I called the liar in front of witnesses.

I followed the receipt.

I found the truth.

Lauren had used my face to fool men, steal money, and hide behind friendship.

She thought my name would protect her.

May you like

Instead, it exposed her.

And the woman she sent to destroy me became the first person to help clear my name.
