Chapter 6

Tiffany’s father arrived at noon.
Garrett Vale filled the private office like a storm in an expensive suit.
He did not look at me first.
Men like him never look at the person they plan to crush until witnesses make it necessary.
He shook Alexander’s hand with a smile that never reached his eyes.
“Alex. This has gotten out of hand.”
Alexander gestured to the chair across from him.
“It got out of hand when your daughter assaulted my employee.”
Garrett’s smile faded.
Then he looked at me.
The change was immediate.
Disgust wrapped in politeness.
“Miss Ellison.”
I nodded.
“Mr. Vale.”
“My daughter is emotional.”
“She hit me.”
“She felt disrespected.”
“She ordered me to kneel.”
Garrett’s eyes hardened.
“Let’s not dramatize.”
Alexander opened his laptop and played the footage.
Kneel and apologize to me.
Garrett watched without blinking.
Then he said, “That video was illegally recorded.”
Alexander leaned back.
“It was recorded by store security on private property.”
“I want it deleted.”
“No.”
“I want her fired.”
“No.”
“I want a settlement.”
“No.”
Garrett’s jaw flexed.
“You’re making a mistake.”
Alexander’s voice stayed calm.
“No. Your daughter made one, and you are trying to purchase her innocence.”
Garrett stood.
“Do you know how many permits I can delay on your downtown project?”
Alexander smiled slightly.
“There it is.”
Garrett froze.
Alexander tapped his phone.
The meeting had been recorded.
Garrett looked at the device.
“You arrogant—”
I stood.
My legs shook, but I stood.
“Mr. Vale.”
Both men looked at me.
I swallowed.
“You think this is about your daughter being embarrassed.”
Garrett’s eyes narrowed.
“It is.”
“No. It is about people like you teaching people like her that workers are furniture.”
His face darkened.
I kept going.
“My mother cleaned offices until her knees gave out. Men like you walked past her without seeing her. I sell dresses to women who call me sweetheart while stepping on my fingers. I know exactly what your daughter learned.”
Garrett stepped closer.
Alexander moved, but I lifted a hand.
Let me.
I looked Garrett in the eye.
May you like
“She learned it from you.”
For the first time, Garrett Vale had nothing to say.
