Chapter 10

The settlement offer came with six zeros.

I stared at it in Simone’s office.

My mother sat beside me.

Jamie stood behind my chair.

Alexander sat across the room, quiet.

Garrett Vale offered money, a sealed agreement, no admission of wrongdoing, and a promise that Tiffany would attend “empathy training.”

Jamie laughed.

“Empathy training?”

My mother whispered, “That’s a lot of money.”

It was.

Enough to pay her medical debt.

Enough to send Jamie to school.

Enough to move us out of the apartment where the pipes screamed every winter.

Enough to breathe.

Simone looked at me.

“Your choice.”

I looked at Alexander.

He said nothing.

I appreciated that.

Everyone else wanted something.

Garrett wanted silence.

The public wanted drama.

My family wanted safety.

Even I wanted peace so badly my bones ached.

But peace bought with silence is just fear wearing better clothes.

“No,” I said.

My mother closed her eyes.

Jamie put a hand on my shoulder.

Simone nodded once.

“Then we proceed.”

The countersuit expanded.

More employees came forward from other Sterling Row businesses.

A florist fired after refusing Garrett’s daughter service.

A valet threatened after witnessing a drunk assault.

A restaurant hostess accused of stealing after rejecting one of Garrett’s friends.

Patterns emerged.

People like Garrett did not commit one cruelty.

They cultivated systems where cruelty could move without fingerprints.

Alexander held a press conference.

He did not make himself the hero.

He named the workers.

He announced legal protections for every employee in Sterling Row.

He created a fund for staff facing retaliation from wealthy clients.

Then he said, “Luxury cannot be built on humiliation.”

I watched from backstage.

For the first time, I felt the world tilt slightly toward people like us.
