Chapter 19

The clinic’s first anniversary filled the courtyard outside Sterling Row.

Workers came with families.

Food trucks lined the street.

A mariachi band played because Jamie insisted every serious event needed loud music.

Alexander gave a short speech.

Very short.

I had trained him well.

Then I spoke.

I looked out at the crowd and saw uniforms.

Aprons.

Name tags.

Housekeeper shoes.

Security jackets.

Faces tired from work and bright with being seen.

“My whole life,” I said, “people told me beauty was power.”

I paused.

“It wasn’t. Not by itself.”

The crowd grew quiet.

“Power is being believed. Power is having witnesses. Power is knowing the rules cannot be rewritten only by the people who own the room.”

I saw Jamie crying and pretending not to.

I saw Alexander watching me like I was more than the first thing strangers noticed.

I saw my mother in every tired woman standing tall.

“So we built this place,” I said.

“For anyone who was told to kneel.”

The applause rose slowly.

Then fully.

Like rain after drought.

That night, Alexander and I walked through the closed boutique.

The floor had been replaced.

The cameras upgraded.

The staff trained.

The air felt different.

I stood in the exact spot where Tiffany slapped me.

Alexander stood beside me.

“Does it still hurt?” he asked.

“Sometimes.”

He nodded.

“Today?”

May you like

I smiled.

“No.”
