Chapter 5: What Michael Left Behind
Nobody spoke.
I couldn't.
The name Michael seemed to hang in the library like smoke.
Twenty-three years.
Twenty-three years of believing one version of a story.
And now a stranger was tearing it apart in front of my son.
I looked at Elliot Vance.
“Explain.””
He walked slowly into the room.
Richard stepped toward him.
“You have no right.””
Vance looked at him.
“I have every right.””
“You signed an agreement.””
“I signed an agreement under threat.””
Richard went still.
Daniel looked between them.
“Someone tell me what is happening.””
I turned to Vance.
“You said Michael was running from Richard.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Vance lowered himself into a chair.
“Because Michael discovered the Holloways were moving money through a series of shell companies.””
My eyes moved to Richard.
“Northstar.””
Vance nodded.
“Northstar was one of them.””
“When?””
“Twenty-four years ago.””
“That was before I started my company.””
“Yes.””
“Then why was my company involved?””
“It wasn't.””
I stared at him.
“Then what is this?””
I held up the forged contract.
Vance looked at it.
“That document was created years later.””
“By whom?””
He looked at Charlotte.
She lowered her eyes.
I turned toward her.
“You?””
She shook her head.
“I didn't create it.””
“Then who?””
Vance answered.
“Someone trying to recreate Michael's original records.””
I felt a chill.
“Why?””
“Because the original records disappeared.””
“Where?””
Vance looked at me.
“With Michael.””
My throat tightened.
“But Michael is dead.””
“Yes.””
“So where are the records?””
Vance didn't answer immediately.
Then he said, “Your husband left them for you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“He left me nothing.””
“He left you something.””
“What?””
“A safety deposit box.””
My heart stopped.
“Where?””
“San Francisco.””
“Why didn't anyone tell me?””
“Because Michael instructed me not to.””
I stared at him.
“You knew he was alive after he left?””
Vance nodded.
“How long?””
“Eleven months.””
The room seemed to tilt.
Daniel whispered, “Mom?””
I held up a hand.
“Let him finish.””
Vance continued.
“Michael discovered Richard Holloway was using Northstar to conceal money from several development projects.””
Richard interrupted.
“This is nonsense.””
Vance ignored him.
“He tried to confront Richard.””
“And?””
“Richard threatened him.””
“With what?””
“Your life.””
My breath stopped.
“What?””
Vance looked directly at me.
“Richard told Michael that if he went to the authorities, you and Daniel would be ruined financially.””
I looked at Richard.
He didn't deny it.
Daniel stepped forward.
“You threatened my family?””
Richard's face was rigid.
“You don't understand.””
“I understand enough.””
Vance continued.
“Michael believed Richard had people watching you.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“He was terrified.””
“He could have told me.””
“He believed telling you would make you a target.””
“He left me alone.””
“He thought he was protecting you.””
My eyes burned.
For years, I had told myself Michael left because he was selfish.
Because he didn't care.
Because I wasn't worth staying for.
And now this man was telling me that perhaps the opposite had been true.
Vance reached into his coat.
He removed a small brass key.
He placed it on the table.
“Box 417.””
I stared at it.
“What is inside?””
“Everything Michael believed you would need if the Holloways ever came after you.””
Richard suddenly moved.
He grabbed the key.
Daniel stopped him.
“Don't.””
Richard glared at his son.
“You don't know what you're doing.””
Daniel took the key from his hand.
Then he looked at me.
“Mom.””
I took it.
It felt heavier than it should have.
Charlotte was crying silently.
I looked at her.
“Did you know about the money?””
She shook her head.
“I knew my father was involved in something.””
“When?””
“After I met Daniel.””
“Then why stay quiet?””
She looked at Daniel.
“Because I loved him.””
Daniel's face hardened.
“That isn't an excuse.””
“I know.””
“You lied to me.””
“I know.””
“You used me.””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“I didn't.””
I looked at her.
“Then tell me the truth.””
She wiped her tears.
“My father told me that if I married Daniel, everything would be secure.””
I frowned.
“Secure?””
“He said Pacific Ember would eventually become part of the family.””
Daniel stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
Charlotte looked down.
“He said your mother wouldn't live forever.””
The room went silent.
My son looked physically sick.
I felt no anger.
Only clarity.
Victoria sat down heavily.
“Richard…”
He didn't look at her.
“You told me there was no plan.””
Richard said nothing.
Charlotte turned to him.
“You told me Daniel's mother would sign eventually.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Sign what?””
Nobody answered.
I stepped toward Richard.
“What were you planning?””
He finally looked at me.
“You're making a mistake.””
“No.””
I held up the brass key.
“You made one.””
He stared at it.
Then something changed in his face.
He knew.
He knew exactly what Michael had left behind.
I turned to Vance.
“When can I access the box?””
“Tomorrow morning.””
“Who else knows?””
“Michael.””
“He's dead.””
Vance gave me a sad smile.
“That's why the box was never opened.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Come with me.””
He nodded.
Charlotte took one step toward him.
“Daniel…”
He didn't turn around.
“Don't.””
Her face crumpled.
I walked toward the door.
Then Vance called after me.
“Isabelle.””
I stopped.
“There is one more thing.””
I turned.
He reached into his coat again.
This time, he removed a sealed envelope.
My name was written across the front.
In handwriting I hadn't seen in twenty-three years.
My husband's handwriting.
*Isabelle.*
I couldn't breathe.
Vance held it out.
“Michael instructed me to give you this only if Richard Holloway ever attempted to take control of Pacific Ember.””
I stared at the envelope.
“Did he know this would happen?””
Vance shook his head.
“No.””
“Then why did he write it?””
“Because he knew Richard.””
I took the envelope.
My fingers trembled as I broke the seal.
Inside was one sheet of paper.
Three lines.
I read them once.
Then again.
My knees nearly gave way.
Daniel caught my arm.
“What does it say?””
I looked at my son.
Then at Richard.
And finally at Charlotte.
The words on the page were simple.
*Isabelle,*
*If you are reading this, Richard has finally found his way to Daniel.*
*Do not trust the Holloway family.*
I looked up.
Richard had gone completely pale.
But beneath Michael's warning was something else.
A final sentence.
May you like
One that changed everything.
*And whatever they tell you about my death, don't believe them.*
