Chapter 7: The Secret Sarah Buried
I stared at the photo until my eyes started to hurt.
Daniel standing at the Carter house.
Linda beside him.
And Sarah.
The three people who had become the reason my entire world collapsed.
My first reaction was anger.
A sharp, burning anger that moved through my body faster than fear.
Daniel wanted me to doubt myself.
He wanted me to wonder if Sarah had betrayed me first.
But I had learned something about him.
Daniel never gave information freely.
He used the truth like a weapon.
He twisted it.
He sharpened it.
Then he handed it to you when he knew it would hurt the most.
I turned the phone toward Officer Reynolds.
“He sent this.””
He studied the image.
“When?””
“Just now.””
He looked at the screen again.
“Did he say anything else?””
I showed him the messages.
*You’re fighting the wrong people.*
*The person who betrayed you first was never me.*
Officer Reynolds was quiet.
“What?””
He looked thoughtful.
“Daniel is trying to redirect your attention.””
“Meaning?””
“Meaning he wants you focused on Sarah instead of himself.””
I nodded.
“That’s what I thought.””
“But…”
I looked at him.
“But what?””
He placed the phone down.
“That doesn’t mean Sarah is innocent.””
The words landed heavily.
Because that was the part I was afraid of.
Not that Daniel was lying.
That he might be telling a piece of the truth.
Sarah had already admitted she was there.
She had already admitted she stayed silent.
She had already admitted she helped them.
But what else was she hiding?
“Bring her here,” I said.
Officer Reynolds looked surprised.
“Emma.””
“I need answers.””
“You’re not required to talk to her.””
“I know.””
I looked at the photo again.
“But I need to hear it from her.””
Two hours later, Sarah arrived.
She looked exhausted.
Different from the confident woman I had known for years.
She stood in the doorway, holding her purse tightly.
“Emma.””
I didn’t invite her to sit.
She noticed.
And she deserved to notice.
“I saw the picture,” I said.
Her face changed.
“What picture?””
I handed her my phone.
She looked at it.
The color drained from her face.
“Daniel sent this?””
“Yes.””
Sarah looked terrified.
Not guilty.
Terrified.
“What is he trying to do?”” she whispered.
I watched her carefully.
“Tell me.””
She looked at me.
“Tell you what?””
“The truth.””
She swallowed.
“I already told you.””
“No.””
My voice was calm.
Almost too calm.
“You told me the part where you looked like the victim.””
Sarah flinched.
“That’s not fair.””
I laughed quietly.
“Fair?””
The word felt strange.
“Was it fair when I was on that floor?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Emma…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Not this time.””
The room went silent.
“Tell me why Daniel says you betrayed me first.””
Sarah looked away.
And that was all the answer I needed.
“Sarah.””
She closed her eyes.
“I didn’t want you to find out like this.””
My chest tightened.
“Find out what?””
She sat down slowly.
“I knew Daniel before you did.””
I frowned.
“What?””
She nodded.
“Before you met him.””
The room seemed to tilt.
“You never told me that.””
“I know.””
“How?””
She looked at her hands.
“We worked together.””
I stared at her.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It was only for a few months.””
“Then why hide it?””
Sarah didn’t answer.
And again, silence became the truth.
“Sarah.””
She finally looked up.
“Because Daniel and I were together.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
Not because of jealousy.
That part was gone.
Because suddenly everything I remembered had changed.
“What?””
“Before you.””
“How long?””
“Six months.””
I stood completely still.
Six months.
The same Daniel who told me I was the first person he had ever loved.
The same Daniel who said he had never felt that way before.
All lies.
“You knew him.””
“Yes.””
“You knew what he was like.””
Her eyes filled.
“Yes.””
“Then why did you introduce us?””
Sarah looked broken.
And for the first time, I saw how much she hated herself.
“Because I thought he changed.””
I stared at her.
“People don’t change because they meet the right person.””
She looked down.
“I know that now.””
“No, Sarah.””
I shook my head.
“You knew him.””
She nodded.
“I did.””
“And you still let me marry him.””
Her tears fell.
“Yes.””
I turned away.
Because that hurt differently.
Daniel hurt me because he was cruel.
Linda hurt me because she wanted control.
But Sarah?
Sarah hurt me because she knew.
She knew the monster behind the mask.
And she watched me fall in love with him anyway.
“Why?””
The question came out quietly.
“Why would you do that?””
Sarah wiped her face.
“Because when I left Daniel, I thought I escaped him.””
I looked back.
“What does that mean?””
“He wasn’t always like this.””
I almost interrupted.
But she continued.
“He was charming. Kind. Everyone loved him.””
I knew that version.
Everyone did.
“That’s how he works,” she whispered.
“He makes people feel special.””
Then he makes them feel small.
I didn’t say it.
She knew.
“I broke up with him because I found out he was controlling things behind my back.””
“What things?””
Sarah hesitated.
“Money. Friendships. Information.””
My stomach tightened.
“Information?””
“He liked knowing things about people.””
I remembered Daniel knowing every detail of my life.
My passwords.
My schedules.
My conversations.
I had called it attention.
Maybe it was surveillance.
Sarah continued.
“When I met you, I saw how happy you were.””
A tear slipped down her cheek.
“And I hated myself because I knew.””
“You knew what?””
“That he was doing it again.””
Silence.
“You saw it happening.””
“Yes.””
“And you did nothing.””
“I tried.””
“When?””
Sarah looked at me.
“The night you got hurt.””
I froze.
“What do you mean?””
She took a deep breath.
“When Linda called me, she said they needed help.””
“Help?””
“She said Daniel was going to confront you about the divorce.””
I looked at her.
“You knew there were divorce papers.””
“Yes.””
“And you still went.””
“Yes.””
My anger returned.
“Why?””
“Because I thought I could get you out.””
“How?””
“I planned to create a distraction.””
I stared at her.
“But you didn’t.””
She looked down.
“No.””
“Why?””
Her voice became barely audible.
“Because Daniel showed me something.””
“What?””
“My brother’s documents.””
I frowned.
“What documents?””
“He had evidence that could send my brother to prison.””
I went quiet.
Sarah looked at me.
“He told me if I didn’t cooperate, my brother would lose everything.””
I believed she was afraid.
But fear didn’t erase what happened.
“What exactly did you do?””
Sarah looked like she wanted to disappear.
“I gave Linda the key.””
My heart stopped.
“What key?””
“The spare key to your house.””
The room went silent.
“You gave them access?””
“Yes.””
“Sarah.””
“I know.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You don’t understand.””
Her tears fell faster.
“I do.””
“No.””
I pointed at her.
“You didn’t just watch.””
The pain in my chest grew.
“You helped them enter.””
Sarah covered her mouth.
“I’m sorry.””
I stepped back.
Because suddenly I understood why Daniel sent the photo.
He wasn’t just trying to divide us.
He was reminding me of something Sarah had done.
Something she could never take back.
Officer Reynolds entered quietly.
He had heard enough.
“Sarah Bennett.””
She looked up.
“Yes?””
“We need you to come with us.””
Her face went pale.
“Am I under arrest?””
“Not at this time.””
“Then why?””
“Because we found something else.””
Sarah looked confused.
“What?””
Officer Reynolds held up a file.
“Your name appears on a transfer from Daniel Carter’s account.””
Sarah froze.
I looked at her.
“What transfer?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Officer Reynolds answered.
“Three weeks before the attack.””
He opened the file.
“Daniel paid Sarah Bennett twenty thousand dollars.””
My heart sank.
Sarah looked at me.
And I saw the worst thing.
Not guilt.
Not anger.
Shame.
Because there was a part of the story she still hadn’t told me.
A part even bigger than the key.
“Emma,” she whispered.
I stepped back.
“What?””
Her voice trembled.
“I can explain.””
I looked at the woman who had once been my closest friend.
The woman who knew my secrets.
The woman who knew my pain.
And now I knew one thing.
The truth wasn’t hidden anymore.
May you like
It was buried.
And Sarah had been the one holding the shovel.
