Chapter 5: The Truth Behind the Baby
For several seconds, I couldn’t understand the words coming out of Sarah’s mouth.
Not because I didn’t hear them.
Because my mind refused to accept them.
“He wanted your baby.””
The sentence hung between us.
Heavy.
Impossible.
I looked at Sarah, waiting for her to take it back.
Waiting for the familiar Sarah to appear.
The Sarah who would laugh nervously and say, “I explained that badly.””
The Sarah who would tell me I was misunderstanding.
But she didn’t.
She just sat there, crying.
And that scared me more than anything.
“Say that again,” I whispered.
Sarah wiped her face.
“Emma…”
“No.””
My voice became sharper.
“Say it again.””
She looked down.
“Daniel didn’t care about the divorce.””
My fingers tightened around the hospital blanket.
“What does that mean?””
Sarah took a shaky breath.
“It means he knew you would never agree to give up your rights.””
I stared at her.
“What rights?””
Her silence answered before her words did.
The room felt smaller.
“What rights, Sarah?””
She looked at me.
“The baby.””
My heart started pounding.
“You’re saying my husband hurt me because of our child?””
Sarah nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
I felt sick.
Because somehow, that explanation was worse than anything I had imagined.
A person could hate someone.
A person could want revenge.
A person could leave.
But to look at your pregnant wife and see only something to take?
That was not anger.
That was something colder.
“Why?”” I asked.
Sarah looked away.
“Because of his mother.””
Of course.
Linda.
The woman who had spent months reminding me that I was carrying “her family’s future.””
The woman who touched my stomach without asking.
The woman who always said, “This baby belongs to the Carter family.””
I had thought it was just an old-fashioned opinion.
I had never imagined it was a plan.
“What did Linda say?”” I asked.
Sarah hesitated.
“Everything started after the ultrasound.””
I frowned.
“The ultrasound?””
She nodded.
“The day you found out you were having a boy.””
A memory flashed through my mind.
That day.
Daniel had looked so happy.
He had held my hand in the doctor’s office.
He had kissed my forehead.
“You’re giving me everything I ever wanted,” he had whispered.
I remembered crying because I thought it was love.
Now I wondered what he really meant.
“What happened after that day?”” I asked.
Sarah looked at her hands.
“Linda became obsessed.””
“With the baby?””
“With control.””
The answer was immediate.
Sarah continued.
“She started talking about how boys carried the family name. How important it was that the child be raised by the Carters.””
I swallowed.
“I’m his mother.””
“I know.””
“But they acted like I was just…”
“A person carrying him.””
The honesty hurt.
Because it was exactly how they had made me feel.
Like my body was a place where something valuable was being kept until they could claim it.
I looked at Sarah.
“How long have you known?””
She closed her eyes.
“Months.””
The pain that followed was different.
Not shock.
Not fear.
Betrayal.
“You knew?””
“I tried to help.””
“You knew.””
My voice cracked.
“You knew my husband and his mother were planning something, and you said nothing?””
Sarah started crying harder.
“I was scared.””
I laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because I didn’t know what else to do.
“You were scared?””
“Yes.””
I looked at her.
“Sarah, I was the one trapped in that house.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
The words came out before I could stop them.
“You got to walk away.””
She lowered her head.
“I know.””
“You got to go home.””
“I know.””
“You got to sleep at night.””
Her face broke.
“I know.””
The room became silent.
And for the first time, I saw something in Sarah’s expression.
Not guilt alone.
Fear.
Real fear.
“What did Daniel threaten you with?”” I asked.
She looked up.
I knew immediately I had guessed correctly.
“Sarah.””
She looked toward the door.
Then whispered:
“He knew about my brother.””
My eyebrows tightened.
“Your brother?””
She nodded.
“Two years ago, my brother had a legal problem. Daniel helped him.””
I felt my stomach sink.
“He helped him?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because he wanted leverage.””
The word chilled me.
“Leverage?””
“He told me I owed him.””
I stared at her.
“He used your brother to control you?””
“Yes.””
The pieces were falling into place.
Daniel didn’t just control me.
He controlled everyone around him.
Fear was his favorite weapon.
And he knew exactly where to place it.
“But you still helped him.””
Sarah flinched.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I did.””
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because I thought I could stop it.””
I almost said something.
But she continued.
“I thought if I stayed close, I could protect you.””
My anger softened for one second.
Then returned.
“By standing outside my house?””
She looked down.
“I was supposed to take the papers.””
“What papers?””
“The divorce papers.””
I froze.
Sarah reached into her bag.
My body immediately tensed.
She noticed.
“I’m not going to hurt you.””
I said nothing.
She slowly pulled out a folder and placed it on the table.
“I took these from Daniel’s office.””
Officer Reynolds would want them.
I knew that.
But before anyone else saw them, I needed to understand.
I opened the folder.
The first page was a legal document.
My name.
Daniel’s name.
A divorce agreement.
My eyes moved quickly.
Then stopped.
There was a section about custody.
I read it again.
Then again.
Because it couldn’t be real.
“Full custody?””
Sarah nodded.
“Daniel wanted sole custody.””
My hands shook.
“He planned this before the baby was even born?””
“Yes.””
I turned the page.
There were notes.
Handwritten.
Not from a lawyer.
From Daniel.
My blood ran cold.
*Emma is emotionally unstable. Emma has no family nearby.*
*Emma will be easier to discredit after delivery.*
The words blurred.
“He was building a case against me.””
Sarah nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at her.
“How long?””
“Since before you were pregnant.””
I stopped.
“What?””
Sarah looked away.
“Emma…”
“No.””
My voice became quiet.
“How long has he been planning to take my child?””
Sarah didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
I already knew.
The hospital room suddenly felt unsafe.
Not because Daniel was there.
Because I realized how long he had been smiling while planning my destruction.
The flowers.
The baby announcements.
The family dinners.
All of it.
A performance.
A carefully built lie.
I looked at the folder.
Then at Sarah.
“Why give this to me now?””
She wiped her tears.
“Because when I heard the recording…”
She stopped.
“Because I realized I wasn’t helping you.””
She looked directly at me.
“I was helping them.””
For the first time since she entered the room, I believed she meant it.
But forgiveness was not something I could give.
Not yet.
Maybe not ever.
A knock came from the door.
Officer Reynolds entered.
He looked between us.
“Am I interrupting?””
“No,” I said.
I handed him the folder.
“This is what Daniel planned.””
He opened it.
His expression changed as he read.
“This is significant.””
“Can it help?””
He looked at me carefully.
“Yes.””
The word gave me a small piece of strength.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
“Reynolds.””
A few seconds passed.
His face became serious.
“What do you mean she left?””
My heart tightened.
He listened.
Then looked at me.
“Sarah.””
She stood immediately.
“What?””
Officer Reynolds lowered the phone.
“The police were trying to contact your brother.””
Sarah went pale.
“Why?””
“Because Daniel filed a complaint.””
Her face changed.
“What kind of complaint?””
The officer paused.
“He claims you stole confidential documents from him.””
Sarah looked at me.
And suddenly I understood.
Daniel had moved faster than we expected.
He wasn’t waiting.
He wasn’t defending himself.
He was attacking.
Again.
“What else?”” I asked.
Officer Reynolds looked at the phone.
“There’s more.””
“What?””
He hesitated.
Then said:
“Daniel has filed an emergency petition claiming you are unsafe to care for the baby.””
The room went silent.
My hands moved instinctively to my stomach.
My baby.
Even before he was born, Daniel was trying to take him from me.
And then Officer Reynolds added one more sentence.
The sentence that made me realize this fight was bigger than I thought.
“He also named a witness who claims you have a history of violent behavior.””
I stared at him.
“Who?””
The officer looked down at his notes.
Then answered.
“Your mother-in-law.””
I almost laughed.
Because it was unbelievable.
The woman who helped destroy me was now telling the world I was dangerous.
But before I could respond, my phone buzzed.
A new message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
And my blood froze.
*Emma, you should have stayed quiet.*
A second message appeared.
*Now you’re going to lose everything.*
I stared at the screen.
Because I finally understood Daniel’s plan.
May you like
He wasn’t trying to hide what he did anymore.
He was trying to make sure nobody believed the victim.
