Chapter 2

It was my script.

Covered in ink. Every line crossed out. My name blotted over until the paper tore.

The director’s face was pale with anger.

"What is the meaning of this?" he demanded, glancing from the ruined script to the girl clutching her cheek, then to me.

"She attacked me!" the girl—Maya—shouted, pointing a shaking finger at me. "She broke the door down and hit me! And look—she must have destroyed the script in there!"

The principal stepped forward.

"We heard the crash. We saw her swing the chair," he said gravely. "And now this. This is unacceptable."

My heart hammered.

"I didn't touch the script," I said. "Maya and her friends locked me inside. They wanted to make sure I missed the performance. I broke the door only to get out."

"Lies," Maya said, voice trembling but sharp. "You were angry about being chosen over me. You destroyed your own script to ruin the showcase. Then you attacked me!"

The director looked at me, disappointment heavy in his eyes.

"You were the one we trusted," he said. "The lead. The face of this production. And this is how you behave?"
