Chapter 9: The Meeting I Was Never Meant to See

The photograph stayed on my screen.

I kept staring at it, waiting for something to change.

Waiting for the image to become unclear.

Waiting for some explanation to appear.

It didn’t.

There was Clara.

Standing outside the hospital.

Standing beside Marcus Hale.

Smiling.

My wife.

The woman I trusted more than anyone.

The woman who had spent the last few days proving she was the only person who never abandoned me.

And yet there she was.

With the man trying to take everything I built.

“Arthur.””

Clara’s voice was barely above a whisper.

I looked up.

She wasn’t looking at the photo.

She was looking at me.

And I saw the hurt in her eyes.

Not anger.

Not guilt.

Pain.

Because she knew exactly what I was thinking.

“Tell me.””

The words came out colder than I intended.

Her face changed.

“Arthur…”

“Tell me who he is.””

She looked at the screen.

Then closed her eyes.

“I can explain.””

I hated those words.

Not because they meant guilt.

Because every person who had betrayed me had used them.

My father.

My mother.

Vanessa.

Everyone had an explanation.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone wanted me to understand after they had already hurt me.

“Clara.””

She looked at me.

“I need the truth.””

She nodded slowly.

“You deserve that.””

She sat down.

For a moment, she just looked at her hands.

Then she said:

“Marcus Hale is my brother.””

The room went silent.

I blinked.

“What?””

“My half-brother.””

I stared at her.

“I don’t understand.””

“I know.””

She swallowed.

“I should have told you.””

“Why didn’t you?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because I thought he was gone.””

That answer confused me even more.

“Gone?””

She nodded.

“From my life.””

I sat down across from her.

“Start from the beginning.””

She took a deep breath.

“My mother had me when she was very young. My father left before I was born.””

I listened.

“She remarried years later. Marcus was her husband’s son from a previous marriage.””

“Your stepbrother.””

“Yes.””

She looked away.

“He was always different.””

“How?””

“Ambitious.””

The way she said the word told me there was more.

“Ambitious isn’t a crime.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“But he didn’t care who got hurt.””

I stayed quiet.

“When I was eighteen, Marcus was already talking about investments and companies. He used to say people were either owners or employees.””

“That sounds like him.””

She nodded.

“He hated being powerless.””

“What happened?””

Her expression became distant.

“His father left him nothing.””

“And?””

“And he blamed everyone.””

I leaned back.

“So why was he at the hospital?””

She looked down.

“Because he came to see me.””

“When?””

“Six months ago.””

“Why?””

She hesitated.

Then:

“Because he knew about Sophie.””

I frowned.

“How?””

“He found me through social media.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She looked at me.

“Arthur, I haven’t spoken to him in almost ten years.””

I believed her.

But I needed to understand.

“What did he want?””

Her voice lowered.

“He wanted to reconnect.””

I almost laughed.

“The man trying to buy my company wanted to reconnect?””

“I didn’t know about the company.””

“Clara.””

“I swear.””

The certainty in her voice stopped me.

“He never mentioned your business.””

I looked at the photograph.

“Then why did he take this?””

“I don’t know.””

I picked up my phone.

“Daniel needs to know.””

“Arthur.””

“What?””

“Please.””

The desperation in her voice made me stop.

She wasn’t asking me to hide something.

She was asking me to listen.

“He came to the hospital because he said he wanted to apologize.””

“For what?””

“For how he treated me when we were younger.””

I waited.

“My mother became sick when I was nineteen. Marcus blamed me because he thought I was taking attention away from him.””

I frowned.

“That’s why you stopped talking?””

She nodded.

“He said things I never forgot.””

“What things?””

Her eyes lowered.

“He told me I would never belong anywhere.””

My chest tightened.

Because suddenly I understood something.

My wife wasn’t hiding Marcus because she trusted him.

She was hiding him because he was a wound.

A painful part of her past she had buried.

“What did you talk about at the hospital?””

“Mostly Sophie.””

I looked at her.

“He knew?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“He saw the pregnancy announcement.””

I nodded slowly.

“And then?””

“He asked about you.””

My body went still.

“About me?””

“Yes.””

“What did you say?””

“The truth.””

“What truth?””

“That you built a successful company.””

My stomach tightened.

“And that was all?””

“Yes.””

I studied her face.

She looked exhausted.

Not defensive.

Not secretive.

Just tired.

Then my phone buzzed.

Daniel.

I answered.

“Arthur.””

His voice was urgent.

“I found the connection.””

“What connection?””

“Marcus Hale and your father.””

I stood.

“What?””

“They’ve been working together longer than we thought.””

I looked at Clara.

“How long?””

“Almost a year.””

My jaw tightened.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Daniel sounded frustrated.

“It’s real.””

“What proof?””

“I found emails.””

“Send them.””

A few seconds later, my phone buzzed.

I opened the first one.

From Marcus.

To my father.

The subject:

*Project Bennett Acquisition*

My stomach turned.

The message was short.

> “Once the transfer is complete, Arthur will no longer have authority.””

I kept reading.

Another email.

> “The wife is the key. Use her trust.””

My blood went cold.

I looked at Clara.

She saw my expression.

“What?””

I turned the phone around.

She read it.

Then her face changed.

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“No, he wouldn’t.””

“Who?””

“Marcus.””

She looked horrified.

“He used me.””

I wanted to say something.

Anything.

But I didn’t know what.

Because this wasn’t just my betrayal anymore.

It was hers too.

Daniel continued.

“There’s more.””

“What?””

“Your father wasn’t the person who started this plan.””

I froze.

“What do you mean?””

“The first proposal came from Marcus.””

I looked at the email.

“Why?””

“That’s what I’m trying to figure out.””

I stared at Clara.

Then something clicked.

The hospital.

The signature.

The documents.

Marcus had access to something only Clara would have.

Her trust.

Her handwriting.

Her past.

He didn’t need to break into my company.

He found a way through my wife.

Not because she helped him.

Because he knew she would never expect him to hurt her.

“Daniel.””

“Yeah?””

“Find everything about Marcus Hale and Clara.””

A pause.

“Arthur…”

“Everything.””

“Okay.””

I ended the call.

Clara was crying silently.

“I’m sorry.””

I sat beside her.

“No.””

“But if I had told you—”

“No.””

She looked at me.

“This isn’t your fault.””

The words surprised me.

Because a week ago, I would have said them without hesitation.

Now I understood how hard it was to say them when trust had been damaged.

But I meant it.

“You didn’t betray me.””

She looked away.

“He used me.””

“Yes.””

“And I let him close.””

“You didn’t know.””

She shook her head.

“I should have.””

I took her hand.

“Clara.””

She looked at me.

“The people who hurt us are responsible for their choices.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

For the first time in days, I saw some of the weight leave her face.

Then my phone buzzed again.

A new message.

From Daniel.

One sentence.

*Arthur, I found why Marcus chose your company.*

I opened it.

A file appeared.

Inside was a report.

A financial report.

Not about my company.

About Marcus Hale.

I scrolled.

Then stopped.

Because the final page explained everything.

Marcus wasn’t trying to buy my company because it was profitable.

He wasn’t trying to destroy me because of money.

He was trying to take it because of something my father had hidden for years.

Something connected to the beginning of my business.

Something that meant my entire company might have never belonged only to me.

At the bottom of the report was one sentence:

*Original investor: Richard Bennett.*

I looked at the screen.

My father.

My company.

My entire life.

And a truth I had never known.

May you like

My father wasn’t trying to steal my business.

He was claiming something he believed was already his.
