Chapter 7: The Buyer Waiting in the Shadows

“The buyer is someone you already know.””

My mother’s words followed me out of her mouth and stayed there.

Suspended.

Waiting.

I stared at her.

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

That was the problem with my family.

They always knew how to create a disaster.

But when the truth arrived, suddenly everyone became afraid of speaking.

“Mom.””

She looked at me.

“Who is buying my company?””

Her lips parted.

Then closed.

I tightened my grip on the document.

“I’m done protecting everyone’s feelings.””

She flinched.

“Arthur…”

“No.””

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Ten years.””

She looked down.

“Ten years I fixed problems I didn’t create.””

I placed the document on the table.

“Ten years I believed you needed help.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I did need help.””

“Yes.””

I nodded.

“And I gave it.””

A pause.

“But you didn’t need a son.””

She looked at me.

“You needed a bank account.””

The words hurt her.

I could see that.

But for the first time, I wasn’t trying to make the pain disappear.

Because nobody had cared about mine.

Finally, she whispered:

“Marcus Hale.””

The name hit me instantly.

Not because I knew him personally.

Because everyone in my industry knew him.

Marcus Hale was the CEO of Hale Strategic Partners.

A private investment firm that specialized in acquiring logistics companies.

His reputation was simple.

He bought successful businesses, removed founders, cut costs, and sold them later for massive profits.

He wasn’t a competitor.

He was something worse.

A predator who waited for weakness.

“You’re lying.””

My mother shook her head.

“I wish I was.””

I looked at the document again.

The name was there.

The agreement was between my father and Marcus’s company.

A plan to transfer ownership.

Then sell.

My company.

The thing I built from nothing.

The thing where I spent nights sleeping at my desk.

The thing where I missed birthdays, vacations, and holidays because I believed I was building security for my future family.

They were going to sell it.

And they were going to do it using my own name.

“When?””

My mother looked confused.

“What?””

“When were they planning this?””

She hesitated.

“After the vacation.””

I laughed once.

A quiet, empty sound.

Of course.

The vacation.

The celebration.

The perfect ending to their performance.

They planned to enjoy three weeks in Italy while I unknowingly lost control of my own company.

“When were you going to tell me?””

My mother looked away.

That was the answer.

I nodded slowly.

“You weren’t.””

She whispered:

“I was afraid.””

I stared at her.

“Afraid of what?””

“Your father.””

I almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

But then I remembered Clara sitting at that dinner table.

Remembered the way my mother watched while my wife was humiliated.

“You were afraid of him.””

“Yes.””

“But not afraid enough to stop him.””

She said nothing.

That silence was the final answer.

I picked up the folder.

“I need the rest of these documents.””

She looked alarmed.

“Arthur.””

“Give them to me.””

“I can’t.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

She looked toward the hallway.

Then lowered her voice.

“Because he knows.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

“Your father.””

“What does he know?””

“That I took these.””

I froze.

“You stole evidence from him?””

She shook her head.

“I copied it.””

“Why?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because when I saw what he planned to do…”

She stopped.

“What?””

She wiped her face.

“I realized he wasn’t trying to protect our family.””

A pause.

“He was destroying it.””

For the first time that day, I saw something human in her.

Regret.

But regret didn’t erase damage.

It only arrived after the damage was done.

My phone buzzed.

Daniel.

I answered.

“Tell me you found something.””

“I did.””

His voice was rushed.

“Arthur, where are you?””

“At my parents’ house.””

A pause.

“Get out.””

My expression changed.

“What?””

“Get out now.””

“Why?””

“I checked the security records again.””

I stepped away from my mother.

“What did you find?””

“Your father accessed the company system forty minutes ago.””

My eyes narrowed.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“It’s not.””

“What did he access?””

“Your executive files.””

My heart sank.

“Why?””

“Because he’s looking for something.””

“What?””

Another pause.

Then:

“Your contingency plan.””

I went still.

Only a few people knew about that.

A private legal document I created after a competitor attempted a hostile takeover two years earlier.

A document designed to protect the company if someone tried to force control away from me.

My father shouldn’t even know it existed.

“How does he know?””

“I don’t know.””

I looked at my mother.

She looked terrified.

“What is it?”” she asked.

I ignored her.

“Daniel, can he access it?””

“We’re trying to lock him out.””

“Trying?””

“Arthur…”

The way he said my name told me everything.

“What?””

“He already downloaded something.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

“We’re not sure yet.””

“Find out.””

“I’m working on it.””

I ended the call.

My mother was watching me.

“What happened?””

“My father is trying to access my emergency files.””

Her face changed.

“Emergency files?””

“Yes.””

She looked frightened.

“Arthur…”

“What?””

She hesitated.

“He knows about those because…”

I stepped closer.

“Because what?””

She looked away.

“Because Vanessa told him.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Vanessa.

The person who always needed more.

The person who always wanted the next thing.

The person who had convinced herself she deserved everything because she was family.

I left without saying goodbye.

I didn’t have the energy.

When I got home, Clara was standing in the kitchen.

The moment she saw my face, she knew.

“What happened?””

I put the folder down.

“It’s worse than we thought.””

She waited.

“My father planned to sell the company.””

Her face went pale.

“To who?””

“Marcus Hale.””

She covered her mouth.

“I’ve heard of him.””

“So have I.””

“And your father was working with him?””

“Yes.””

She looked at the folder.

“How?””

I sat down.

“My family.””

The word felt strange.

Like it no longer belonged to me.

“My family was going to take everything I built.””

Clara came closer.

She didn’t say “I told you so.””

She didn’t say she hated them.

She didn’t say anything cruel.

She just hugged me.

And that somehow hurt more.

Because she was still the person I wanted to protect.

My phone buzzed again.

This time, Daniel sent a message.

Not a call.

Just a message.

*I found the file your father downloaded.*

I opened it.

One attachment.

A PDF.

The name:

*Bennett Logistics Final Transfer Package.*

I clicked.

The first page appeared.

My company logo.

My name.

The ownership transfer agreement.

Then page two.

Page three.

Page four.

My eyes moved down.

And stopped.

Because the final approval section wasn’t signed by my father.

It wasn’t signed by Marcus Hale.

It wasn’t even signed by me.

It was signed by someone else.

Someone whose name I had never expected to see.

At the bottom of the page was a handwritten signature.

And underneath it:

*Clara Bennett.*

I looked up.

My wife saw my face.

“Arthur?””

I couldn’t speak.

Because after everything I had learned…

After all the lies.

After all the betrayal.

There was still one question left.

May you like

The one my father had wanted me to ask from the beginning.

*Why was my wife’s signature on the document that could destroy everything?*
