Chapter 6: The Truth About My Mother

For eight years, I believed I knew everything about my family.

I believed my father was a brilliant businessman.

I believed my mother’s death was a tragic accident.

I believed Daniel was the man who loved me enough to stand beside me forever.

That night, in a ballroom full of strangers, every belief I had built my life around began to collapse.

“Sarah…”

My father’s voice came through the phone.

But I barely recognized it.

The confidence was gone.

The certainty was gone.

For the first time in my life, Victor Bennett sounded like a man carrying a burden too heavy to hide.

Daniel stood across from me, watching.

Waiting.

He had spent the entire evening losing control.

The company.

The board.

His reputation.

His marriage.

But now he had found something else.

A secret.

And he knew secrets could be more powerful than money.

“What about my mother?”” I asked.

Nobody moved.

The guests who had stayed for entertainment were now witnessing something far more personal.

A family breaking apart in real time.

My father was silent.

“Dad.””

I kept my voice steady.

“Tell me.””

Daniel looked almost satisfied.

He thought he had finally found a weapon.

He thought this was the moment I would fall apart.

But he didn’t understand something.

I had spent years living with unanswered questions.

I had spent years wondering why my father never talked about my mother.

Why her photographs disappeared from our home.

Why every conversation about her ended quickly.

I wasn’t afraid of the truth.

I was tired of not knowing it.

My father finally spoke.

“Your mother was not supposed to be part of this world.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means she hated everything about my business.””

A small, painful smile appeared in his voice.

“She used to tell me that money changes people.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

“And she was right.””

I looked at him.

He immediately stopped smiling.

My father continued.

“Your mother believed people should be judged by what they do when nobody is watching.””

Those words felt strangely familiar.

Because they sounded like something my mother would say.

Something I wished I remembered.

“She knew about Hartwell Global?””

“Yes.””

My father paused.

“She knew everything.””

I looked at Daniel.

His expression changed slightly.

“You knew?””

I asked him.

Daniel didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

“You knew about my mother?””

His jaw tightened.

“I knew stories.””

“What stories?””

He looked away.

“Your mother wasn’t the person you think she was.””

My heart tightened.

“Don’t.””

His eyes returned to mine.

“I’m serious.””

“No.””

My voice became sharper.

“You don’t get to use my mother as a weapon because you’re losing.””

The ballroom became silent.

Daniel looked at me.

And for once, he had no immediate response.

Because he knew I was right.

My mother was not a business strategy.

Not a negotiation.

Not a weakness he could exploit.

She was the woman who gave me life.

My father spoke again.

“Daniel is right about one thing.””

I turned toward the phone.

My heart sank.

“About what?””

“Your mother knew more than I ever wanted you to know.””

I closed my eyes.

“Then tell me.””

A long pause.

Then:

“Your mother discovered financial problems inside Hartwell Global.””

Everyone looked toward Daniel.

The room shifted.

My father continued.

“She discovered someone was moving money.””

Rachel immediately looked up.

“Before I joined the company?””

“Yes.””

Rachel’s expression changed.

“How long before?””

My father answered.

“Before Daniel became CEO.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What?””

My father continued.

“The first signs of corruption appeared years ago.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“You’re saying someone was stealing before I was in charge?””

“Yes.””

Daniel’s face changed.

For a moment, he looked genuinely shocked.

And I believed him.

Because this was new information even to him.

My father continued.

“Your mother found evidence.””

“Of what?”” I asked.

“Of someone inside the company creating hidden accounts.””

A chill moved through me.

“Who?””

Silence.

My father didn’t answer.

That frightened me more than anything.

“Dad.””

He finally said:

“I never found out.””

Daniel looked at him.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

My father’s voice became heavier.

“It was someone very careful.””

Rachel opened her folder.

“Mr. Bennett.””

Everyone looked at her.

She slowly removed another document.

“I think I know who.””

Daniel stared.

“What?””

Rachel looked at me.

“Your mother’s old records were included in the files I received.””

My breathing stopped.

“Why would you have my mother’s records?””

Rachel hesitated.

“Because they were connected to the investigation.””

My father immediately said:

“Rachel.””

She looked at the phone.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Bennett.””

Then she looked at me.

“But Sarah deserves the truth.””

She handed the document to Emily.

Emily read the page.

Then her face changed.

“What is it?””

Emily looked at me.

“This is a report filed twelve years ago.””

My hands felt cold.

“Twelve years ago?””

“Yes.””

“What does it say?””

Emily hesitated.

Then:

“Your mother suspected someone close to the company.””

“Who?””

She looked at Daniel.

Not at me.

Not at my father.

At Daniel.

The entire room changed.

Daniel immediately stepped back.

“No.””

Rachel spoke quietly.

“She never accused you.””

Daniel looked relieved for half a second.

Then Rachel continued.

“But she investigated your family.””

His relief disappeared.

“My family?””

“Yes.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“Daniel’s family?””

Rachel nodded.

“Your mother believed the financial problems were connected to an old partnership.””

Daniel laughed.

“That’s ridiculous.””

“Is it?””

Rachel opened another file.

“Because the original documents show something interesting.””

“What?””

She looked at him.

“Your father was one of the first people connected to the missing funds.””

Daniel went completely still.

Nobody spoke.

The man who had spent the entire night accusing everyone else of betrayal suddenly had his own family history placed under a spotlight.

“That’s a lie.””

Rachel shook her head.

“No.””

She opened another page.

“I checked the records myself.””

Daniel looked at my father.

“You knew?””

My father didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“You knew my father was involved?””

“I suspected.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“So everyone knew except me?””

The irony was painful.

For years, Daniel had acted like the smartest person in every room.

But the truth was that everyone around him knew more than he did.

My father spoke.

“Daniel, your father’s actions were not yours.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Then why hide it?””

“Because I wanted to protect Sarah.””

The words hit him.

And me.

Because suddenly I understood.

My father wasn’t hiding power.

He was hiding pain.

My mother’s death.

The company.

The secrets.

Everything connected.

I looked at Daniel.

“You knew something was wrong with Hartwell Global.””

His expression changed.

“I didn’t know.””

“But you knew about my mother’s investigation.””

A pause.

“I heard rumors.””

“From who?””

He looked away.

That was the first honest reaction I had seen from him all night.

Fear.

Not fear of losing.

Fear of being exposed.

“Daniel.””

I stepped closer.

“Who told you?””

He remained silent.

My father’s voice became urgent.

“Sarah, listen to me.””

But I couldn’t.

Because Daniel finally spoke.

Quietly.

Almost like he was admitting something he had tried to forget.

“My father told me.””

The room froze.

“He told me before he died.””

I stared at him.

“What did he tell you?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“He told me to stay away from Bennett Holdings.””

“Why?””

His eyes lifted.

And the answer changed everything.

“Because he said your father wasn’t the person everyone thought he was.””

My father became silent.

Daniel continued.

“And he said your mother discovered the truth.””

My heart raced.

“What truth?””

Daniel looked at me.

For the first time, there was no anger.

No arrogance.

Only fear.

“She didn’t die because of an accident.””

The words struck the room like lightning.

Nobody breathed.

Nobody moved.

Daniel whispered:

“Your mother was trying to expose someone.””

My hands trembled.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at my father.

Then back at me.

May you like

And the next words nearly broke me.

“She was investigating your father.””
