Chapter 3: The Man Who Tried to Take Everything

The voice on Vanessa Whitmore’s phone transported me back three years.

Back to a night when I stood in my old office, staring at a stack of legal documents while the man I trusted most told me I was finished.

“Claire.””

Just one word.

But my entire body remembered the betrayal attached to it.

The boutique around me disappeared for a moment.

The chandeliers.

The marble floor.

The silent employees watching us.

All of it faded.

Because there was only one person in the world who could say my name like that.

Like it belonged to him.

Like he still had some kind of ownership over my life.

Vanessa watched my reaction carefully.

She noticed.

Of course she did.

People like Vanessa collected weaknesses the way other people collected jewelry.

She smiled.

“I knew you’d recognize him.””

I didn’t answer.

The voice on the phone spoke again.

“Claire, are you there?””

I stepped closer.

“Alexander.””

A quiet laugh came through the speaker.

Not a happy one.

A confident one.

The kind of laugh someone gave when they believed they had already won.

“It’s been a while.””

“Yes.””

“I heard you’ve been making decisions without consulting anyone.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked pleased.

Too pleased.

“Interesting,” I said.

“What?””

“That you’re calling through her phone.””

A pause.

Then Alexander laughed.

“You always were observant.””

“And you always preferred hiding behind other people.””

Vanessa’s smile faded slightly.

The man on the phone became silent.

A dangerous silence.

Then he said, “You haven’t changed.””

“No.””

I looked around Aurelia House.

“At least one of us built something instead of trying to steal it.””

Daniel shifted uncomfortably.

Emily looked between me and the phone.

She didn’t know the history.

Most people didn’t.

They knew the public version.

The magazines.

The interviews.

The success story.

They didn’t know the war behind it.

They didn’t know that Aurelia almost disappeared before it became an empire.

They didn’t know Alexander Cross was the reason.

Three years earlier, Alexander had been my closest friend.

My business partner.

The person I trusted with every financial decision.

When Aurelia had only twelve stores, he was the one who convinced me we needed aggressive expansion.

He was charming.

Intelligent.

Persuasive.

And I believed he cared about the company as much as I did.

Until the morning I discovered he had been secretly transferring company assets into a private investment group.

My investment group.

My designs.

My employees.

My years of sacrifice.

He thought he could quietly remove me from my own company.

He was wrong.

But he had never forgiven me for surviving.

“I’m surprised,” Alexander said through the phone.

“By what?””

“That you’re still pretending you’re the hero.””

I smiled slightly.

“Are you calling to rewrite history?””

“No.””

“Then why are you here?””

The phone remained silent for a moment.

Then his voice lowered.

“To warn you.””

Vanessa looked amused.

I almost laughed.

Alexander Cross warning me was like a thief offering security advice.

“About what?””

“You’re making emotional decisions.””

I glanced at Daniel.

“No.””

“You’re angry.””

“I’m disappointed.””

“Same thing.””

“No.””

I walked slowly across the boutique.

“Anger wants revenge.””

I stopped.

“Disappointment wants change.””

Nobody spoke.

Alexander sighed.

“You still think you can fix everything.””

“I already did.””

“No, Claire.””

His voice sharpened.

“You built a company. You didn’t build an empire.””

I looked at the walls around me.

Aurelia advertisements.

Luxury collections.

The symbol I created from nothing.

“You sound upset.””

“I’m realistic.””

“Is that what you call it?””

“Yes.””

He paused.

“Because reality is that companies don’t survive because of one person.””

I smiled.

“That’s the first true thing you’ve said.””

Vanessa looked confused.

Alexander continued.

“Aurelia survived because of investors.””

“Yes.””

“Partners.””

“Yes.””

“Board members.””

“Yes.””

“People like me.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

The room became quiet.

“People like you almost destroyed it.””

Vanessa looked between us.

She was starting to understand.

This wasn’t a disagreement.

This was unfinished business.

Alexander’s voice hardened.

“You really want to do this here?””

“I’m not the one who called.””

“You canceled the Whitmore acquisition.””

“Yes.””

“Without board approval.””

I looked at Daniel.

Then back at the phone.

“I am the board approval.””

A pause.

Then Vanessa’s face changed.

Just slightly.

She looked at me.

“You’re lying.””

I didn’t answer.

Alexander did.

“She isn’t.””

The words shocked Vanessa.

Because even he admitted it.

“She owns controlling shares.””

Vanessa stared.

“You knew?””

“Of course I knew.””

Alexander sounded annoyed.

“She built the company.””

Vanessa looked angry now.

“You let me walk into this?””

“No.””

Alexander’s voice became colder.

“I let you create pressure.””

I narrowed my eyes.

“What does that mean?””

Silence.

Too long.

The kind of silence that reveals something.

I looked at Vanessa.

Then at the phone.

“Alexander.””

No answer.

“What does that mean?””

Finally, he spoke.

“You’ll find out soon.””

The call ended.

Vanessa lowered the phone slowly.

For the first time all morning, she looked genuinely uncertain.

I studied her.

“You didn’t know.””

She didn’t respond.

“You thought he was helping you.””

Her eyes hardened.

“I don’t need help.””

“No?””

“No.””

She lifted her chin.

“Alexander approached my family because he knows how valuable our connections are.””

I stared at her.

“And what did he promise you?””

She looked away.

That was enough.

I already knew.

People like Alexander never offered help.

They offered deals.

Deals where they were the only ones who benefited.

Daniel cleared his throat.

“Ms. Vale?””

I turned.

“Yes?””

“What happens now?””

It was a simple question.

But everyone in the room wanted the answer.

I looked at the employees.

At the manager.

At Vanessa.

Then I thought about the years I spent building Aurelia.

I thought about every employee who believed in the company.

Every customer who trusted the name.

Every person who had been judged before they were understood.

“Now,” I said, “we find out how deep this goes.””

Daniel nodded.

“I’ll cooperate.””

“I expect you to.””

He swallowed.

“Am I fired?””

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

His face fell.

“But not today.””

He looked surprised.

“Why?””

“Because today, I need answers.””

I turned toward Emily.

“Bring me every complaint filed against this location.””

Her eyes widened.

“Every one?””

“Every one.””

“Yes, Ms. Vale.””

“And Emily?””

She stopped.

“Yes?””

“You’re not in trouble.””

Her expression softened.

“Thank you.””

After she walked away, I looked back at Vanessa.

She was still standing there.

Still trying to hold onto dignity.

Still refusing to admit the ground had shifted beneath her.

“You should leave,” I said.

Her eyebrows lifted.

“Excuse me?””

“You heard me.””

Her laugh returned.

Weak.

Forced.

“You think this is over?””

“No.””

I looked directly at her.

“I think it’s beginning.””

She stepped closer.

“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””

I almost smiled.

“Neither did you.””

She stared at me.

Then she reached into her purse and pulled out her phone.

She typed something quickly.

A few seconds later, mine vibrated.

A message appeared.

Unknown number.

Attached was a photo.

My hand froze.

Because it wasn’t a threat.

It was worse.

It was a document.

A document that showed someone inside Aurelia had been selling confidential company information.

And at the bottom of the page was a signature.

Not Alexander’s.

Not Vanessa’s.

Someone I trusted.

Someone who had been beside me since the very beginning.

My eyes locked onto the name.

And for the first time that day…

I felt something close to fear.

May you like

Because the person trying to destroy my empire wasn’t standing outside the company.

They were already inside.
