Chapter 7: The Envelope That Exposed Everything
"Nobody moves.""
My father's voice cut through the conference room.
Daniel immediately called hotel security.
"Lock down the executive floor. Nobody leaves with company documents, electronic devices, or archived records until legal has completed the initial review.""
I looked at Samantha.
"How do you know Victoria paid people to stay silent?""
Samantha's fingers tightened around the edge of her folder.
"Because she offered me money.""
My father turned toward her.
"When?""
"Eleven months ago. After I submitted my complaint.""
She took a shaky breath.
"She called me into a private meeting room. Marcus was there, too. Victoria told me that my career would be easier if I stopped making accusations.""
"What did she offer?"" I asked.
"Twenty thousand dollars.""
I stared at her.
"Just to withdraw your complaint?""
Samantha nodded.
"She said it was compensation for the stress I'd experienced. She also said that if I accepted, nobody would have to lose their job.""
My father looked disgusted.
"And you refused?""
"Yes.""
Samantha's eyes filled.
"Two days later, I was accused of mishandling guest information. My father told me there was nothing he could do.""
I looked at her.
"Did you tell him about the offer?""
"Yes.""
"What did he say?""
She lowered her head.
"He told me to take the money and move on.""
Nobody spoke.
Then my father turned toward Daniel.
"Bring Marcus upstairs.""
Daniel nodded.
"And have someone secure that envelope before it disappears.""
Within minutes, two security officers entered the lobby.
Through the conference room's glass wall, I watched them approach the reception desk.
Victoria stood beside Marcus, speaking rapidly.
Marcus held the envelope against his chest.
When the officers approached, Victoria immediately stepped back.
"What's happening?"" she demanded.
One officer calmly explained that the envelope needed to be preserved as potential evidence in an ongoing corporate investigation.
Victoria laughed.
"That's a private business document.""
The officer replied, "Then you won't mind allowing the legal department to verify that.""
Marcus looked toward the elevator.
His eyes met mine through the glass.
For a moment, he seemed to want to say something.
Then he looked away.
The officers escorted him upstairs.
Victoria remained in the lobby, furious.
When Marcus entered the conference room, he looked like a man who hadn't slept in days.
Daniel pointed toward a chair.
"Please sit down, Mr. Reed.""
Marcus didn't move.
"Am I being accused of something?""
"Not at this stage. We're asking you to cooperate with an investigation.""
Marcus looked at my father.
"Richard, I've worked for this company for seven years.""
Dad nodded.
"And in those seven years, you were entrusted with protecting its employees and guests.""
Marcus looked down.
Daniel placed the envelope on the table.
"Who gave this to you?""
Marcus hesitated.
"Mrs. Hale.""
"What did she say was inside?""
"An apology letter.""
I almost laughed.
"An apology letter?""
Marcus glanced at me.
"She said she wanted to resolve the misunderstanding.""
"Did you believe her?""
He rubbed his hands together.
"I didn't open it.""
Daniel carefully opened the envelope.
Inside were three documents.
The first was a cashier's check for $25,000.
The second was a handwritten note.
The third was a printed statement.
Daniel read the note silently.
Then he passed it to my father.
Dad's expression hardened.
"What is this?""
Marcus looked frightened.
"I don't know.""
Dad placed the paper in front of him.
"Read it.""
Marcus's eyes moved across the handwriting.
His face lost color.
The note said:
Marcus, I expect you to keep your statement consistent with what we discussed. The incident should be described as a disagreement initiated by Danielle Brooks. Your previous assistance has been appreciated. I trust you understand why discretion remains important.
At the bottom was Victoria's signature.
I looked at Marcus.
"Your previous assistance?""
He closed his eyes.
My father leaned forward.
"How much money has Mrs. Hale paid you?""
Marcus shook his head.
"Mr. Brooks, I never accepted money.""
Daniel lifted the cashier's check.
"Then why is this addressed to you?""
Marcus looked at the check.
"I didn't ask for it.""
"That wasn't the question.""
Marcus finally sat down.
"I accepted money once.""
The room became silent.
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Once?""
He nodded.
"Last year.""
"For what?""
He stared at the table.
"She offered me fifteen thousand dollars to make sure Samantha's complaint didn't reach corporate.""
Samantha made a small sound.
I turned toward her.
She looked devastated.
"My own father?""
Marcus immediately looked at her.
"Samantha, please.""
She shook her head.
"You told me there was nothing you could do.""
"I was trying to protect you.""
"By helping the woman who threatened me?""
Marcus's voice broke.
"I was afraid.""
Samantha stood.
"Do you know what I did after I left this hotel? I worked two jobs because nobody wanted to hire someone who had been dismissed for dishonesty.""
Marcus covered his face.
"I know.""
"No, Dad. You don't.""
She pointed toward the envelope.
"You took money while I was losing my career.""
Marcus began crying.
My father allowed the silence to continue.
Then Daniel spoke.
"Mr. Reed, we need the full history of your communications with Mrs. Hale.""
Marcus wiped his face.
"I can provide them.""
"All of them?""
"Yes.""
"Even those involving Martin Cole?""
Marcus hesitated.
Then nodded.
"Especially those.""
Daniel immediately began documenting his statement.
For the next forty minutes, Marcus described how Victoria's influence had spread through the hotel.
She knew which employees were financially vulnerable.
She knew which managers were worried about their performance reviews.
She knew that Gregory Hale's financing relationships made executives reluctant to challenge her.
And she knew Martin Cole was willing to help.
Marcus admitted that he had approved several employee terminations after receiving complaints from Victoria.
He also admitted that he had closed Samantha's report without investigating it.
When he finished, my father looked at him.
"Why did you defend her today?""
Marcus stared at his hands.
"Because I thought the consequences of upsetting her would be worse than the consequences of upsetting you.""
I felt a chill.
"So you chose the person who could hurt you financially over the woman who had just been assaulted.""
He didn't answer.
My father stood.
"Marcus Reed, you are being placed on immediate administrative leave pending investigation. You will surrender your company credentials and cooperate fully with legal counsel.""
Marcus nodded slowly.
"I understand.""
He turned toward Samantha.
"Can we talk?""
She looked at him for a long moment.
"Not today.""
He lowered his head.
Daniel collected the documents.
But just as he finished, his phone rang.
He listened.
Then looked toward my father.
"Sir, we've located Martin Cole.""
"Where?""
"He's at the company's regional office.""
"Good. Have him come in.""
Daniel hesitated.
"There's a problem.""
"What?""
"He's not alone. Gregory Hale is with him.""
Dad looked at me.
I understood immediately.
They were coordinating their response.
My father asked Daniel to arrange a formal meeting with both men.
Then he turned toward Samantha.
"Your evidence is important. I want you to know that your complaint will finally receive a proper investigation.""
Samantha nodded.
"Thank you.""
I reached for her hand.
"You shouldn't have had to wait this long.""
She squeezed my fingers.
"Neither should you.""
A few minutes later, Victoria appeared outside the conference room.
She was no longer smiling.
She had removed her sunglasses, and her lipstick was slightly smudged.
She knocked sharply.
My father opened the door.
"Yes?""
"I want my envelope back.""
Dad looked at her.
"The documents are being preserved.""
"That check is mine. I can cancel it.""
Daniel answered from behind him.
"You're welcome to discuss the payment with your attorney.""
Victoria's eyes narrowed.
She looked directly at me.
"You think you've won something?""
I didn't answer.
She stepped closer.
"You have no idea what you've started.""
My father moved between us.
"That's enough.""
Victoria laughed bitterly.
"Richard, your daughter has made this personal.""
Dad's voice was ice-cold.
"Your behavior made it personal.""
She looked at Samantha.
Then at Marcus.
Finally, she turned toward me.
"You should have stayed in your little chair and minded your own business.""
I held her gaze.
"I was minding my own business when you slapped me.""
For the first time, Victoria had no immediate response.
She walked away.
But as the door closed, Daniel's phone buzzed again.
He checked the message.
His expression changed.
"Mr. Brooks, Gregory Hale has requested an emergency board meeting.""
Dad frowned.
"On what grounds?""
Daniel turned the screen toward him.
The request contained a proposed resolution.
It called for an immediate review of my voting authority under the family trust.
And the stated reason was devastating.
*Alleged conduct by Danielle Brooks creating reputational and operational risk to the company.*
I stared at the screen.
"They're trying to remove me?""
Dad nodded slowly.
"Yes, sweetheart.""
May you like
Then he added something that made my heart sink.
"And they may already have enough votes to try.""
