Chapter 2: The Name on the Ownership Papers

For three seconds, nobody moved.

I stood beside the armchair with Grace against my chest, listening to my father's question.

"Has anyone told you who owns that hotel?""

I looked at Marcus.

Then at Victoria.

"No, Dad. Why?""

My father exhaled.

"Because I think it's time you learned something about the company your grandfather left us.""

Marcus's face had gone pale.

Victoria, however, still seemed convinced that nothing important was happening.

She stepped closer.

"Excuse me. Whatever family drama this is, it doesn't change the fact that this woman needs to leave.""

The man holding the leather folder turned toward her.

"Ma'am, I would recommend that you wait.""

Victoria stared at him.

"Do you know who I am?""

He didn't blink.

"Yes, ma'am. We do.""

She looked satisfied.

"Then you should understand that I am a preferred guest at this property.""

"Understood.""

"And I expect the manager to handle this situation.""

The man glanced at Marcus.

"That is precisely what we're here to discuss.""

Marcus swallowed.

I could hear my father breathing through the phone.

"Danielle?""

"I'm here.""

"Put me on speaker again.""

I did.

"Dad, I'm listening.""

"Do you remember your grandfather, William?""

I smiled faintly despite everything.

"Of course.""

My grandfather had died when I was nineteen.

He was a tall, silver-haired man who always carried peppermint candies in his coat pockets. He had built his business from a single small hotel in Ohio into a nationwide hospitality company.

He called me his little hurricane.

He used to say I was the only person who could make him laugh during a board meeting.

But I hadn't seen much of the business after he died.

My father had taken over its management, while I chose a quieter life.

I went to college, married briefly, and later became a mother.

I had never wanted to work in a corporate office.

My father respected that.

Or at least, I thought he did.

"Your grandfather established Brooks Hospitality Group," Dad continued.

"The Grand Meridian is one of its flagship properties.""

I frowned.

"I know that.""

"Danielle, you also know that I control the group now.""

"Yes.""

"Then you should know that your grandfather placed a controlling family interest in a trust for you.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

Marcus looked down at the folder.

Victoria's expression changed slightly.

My father continued.

"The trust owns fifty-one percent of Brooks Hospitality Group. You're its principal beneficiary. You've been the majority beneficial owner since your twenty-first birthday.""

My mouth fell open.

"Dad, what are you talking about?""

"I was going to explain everything when you were ready. You told me you wanted nothing to do with hotels, and I didn't want the responsibility interfering with your life.""

I looked around the lobby.

The crystal chandeliers.

The polished marble.

The reception desk.

The expensive furniture.

All of it suddenly seemed different.

"You're telling me this hotel belongs to my family?""

"More accurately, sweetheart, you own the controlling interest in the company that owns it.""

Victoria laughed.

It was a sharp, dismissive sound.

"That's ridiculous.""

The first man in the suit opened his leather folder.

"Mr. Reed, perhaps you should look at this.""

Marcus hesitated.

"What is it?""

"Corporate ownership documentation, along with confirmation from the executive office.""

Marcus took the papers.

His eyes moved across the first page.

Then the second.

Then the signature at the bottom.

His fingers began to tremble.

Victoria stepped beside him.

"Marcus, what's going on?""

He didn't answer.

She pulled the document slightly toward herself.

Her eyes landed on the company name.

*BROOKS HOSPITALITY GROUP.*

Beneath it was a statement identifying the controlling family trust and its principal beneficiary.

Danielle Marie Brooks.

My name.

Victoria stared.

Then she looked at me.

"That's impossible.""

I didn't know what to say.

The man in the suit introduced himself.

"My name is Daniel Price. I'm the group's regional legal director. This is James Carter, executive security.""

He turned toward Marcus.

"Mr. Reed, the corporate office has requested an immediate preservation of all surveillance footage from the lobby, reception area, and entrance.""

Marcus licked his lips.

"Of course.""

"Additionally, we need an incident report identifying every employee who witnessed the altercation.""

Victoria stepped forward.

"Wait a minute. This is getting out of hand.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Ma'am, nobody has accused you of anything at this moment. We're documenting an incident involving a physical assault allegation against a guest's family member.""

"She wasn't a guest!""

I finally spoke.

"I was sitting in the lobby.""

Victoria pointed at me.

"She was trespassing.""

Daniel didn't raise his voice.

"That does not give anyone permission to strike another person.""

Victoria's face flushed.

"You have no idea what happened.""

I almost laughed.

"You're right. Apparently, nobody in this room wants to know.""

Daniel turned toward me.

"Miss Brooks, would you be comfortable telling us what happened?""

I nodded.

"She approached me while I was feeding my daughter. She demanded to know why I was sitting here. I explained that I needed a quiet place for a few minutes. She insulted me, then slapped me.""

"Did she touch your daughter?""

"No. I turned away before she could.""

Daniel glanced at James.

"Please make sure we have a private area available for Miss Brooks and the baby.""

James nodded.

"Certainly.""

Marcus suddenly stepped forward.

"Miss Brooks, perhaps we should discuss this privately.""

I looked at him.

"Why? You didn't want to discuss it privately when I was asking you for help.""

He winced.

"I was trying to maintain order.""

"By threatening to have security remove me?""

"That's not how I intended it.""

Victoria shook her head.

"This is absurd. Marcus, tell them who I am.""

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

"Mrs. Hale is one of our long-standing guests.""

"Exactly," she snapped.

"My family has stayed here for years. My husband is a major investor in several hospitality businesses.""

Daniel closed his folder.

"That may be true, ma'am. It doesn't change what happened.""

Victoria took a step toward me.

"Listen, Danielle, I don't know what your father told you, but money doesn't give you the right to humiliate people.""

I stared at her.

"You're the one who hit me.""

She rolled her eyes.

"It was a misunderstanding.""

"A misunderstanding?""

"You were being aggressive.""

I glanced at the men in suits.

"Did I look aggressive while holding a six-week-old baby?""

Neither answered.

They didn't need to.

My father's voice came through the speaker again.

"Danielle, I'm on my way. Don't let anyone pressure you into signing anything.""

Victoria heard him.

"Your father seems to enjoy making a scene.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"He's worried about me.""

"Well, perhaps he should teach you some manners.""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Mrs. Hale, I strongly advise you not to approach Miss Brooks again.""

Victoria looked at him with disbelief.

"Who do you think you are?""

"Someone whose job is to protect the company and its people.""

She laughed bitterly.

"People? She isn't even an employee.""

Daniel glanced toward me.

"She's the controlling beneficiary of the company that owns this building.""

Victoria went silent.

Marcus looked as though he might collapse.

A few minutes later, a young receptionist approached with a glass of water.

"Miss Brooks? Would you like to sit somewhere more comfortable?""

I nodded.

"Thank you.""

She led me toward a quieter lounge.

I settled into a sofa and began feeding Grace again.

For the first time since entering the hotel, nobody was telling me to leave.

But I couldn't stop thinking about what had happened.

My father had kept the ownership arrangement quiet because he wanted me to live my own life.

I understood that.

What I didn't understand was why the people managing the company had never been told that the person holding its controlling interest could walk into one of their hotels with a diaper bag and be treated like an intruder.

Daniel sat across from me.

"Miss Brooks, there's something else.""

I looked up.

"What?""

He hesitated.

"We've received preliminary information from the property management office. Mrs. Hale has been involved in several complaints over the past year.""

My stomach tightened.

"What kind of complaints?""

"Disputes with staff. Allegations of verbal abuse. One complaint involving a delivery employee.""

"And what happened?""

He looked down at his folder.

"According to the internal records, none of those complaints resulted in formal disciplinary action.""

"Why?""

"Because they were closed by the property manager.""

I stared at him.

"Marcus?""

Daniel nodded.

Before I could respond, I heard Victoria's voice from the reception desk.

"You're making a terrible mistake, Marcus. My husband will make sure this company regrets today.""

Daniel slowly stood.

Then he looked at me.

"Miss Brooks, I think you should see something.""

He turned his tablet toward me.

A security photograph showed Victoria standing in the lobby three months earlier.

Her hand was raised.

In front of her was a young hotel employee holding a tray of drinks.

The next photograph showed the tray on the floor.

And beneath the images was an incident report.

The employee's name was listed.

*Ethan Miller.*

The complaint had been closed by Marcus Reed.

May you like

But the final line made my blood run cold.

*Employee terminated following management recommendation.*
