Chapter 4: The Secret Behind the Rescue
The next morning, I met Howard at his office.
I didn’t tell Ethan where I was going.
Not because I wanted revenge.
Because I needed answers.
Howard placed a file on the table.
“I traced the message.””
“And?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“It came from someone connected to Ethan’s company.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
Howard opened the file.
“Daniel Mercer.””
I knew the name.
Ethan’s former business partner.
The man who disappeared after the company survived.
“What does he want?””
Howard leaned back.
“I don’t know.””
I opened the file.
Inside were financial records.
Transfers.
Contracts.
Emails.
And one document that made my hands go cold.
A payment authorization.
Signed by Ethan.
Five years earlier.
The same week I saved his company.
I looked at Howard.
“What is this?””
“Your money prevented bankruptcy.””
I stared at the numbers.
“But this…”
“Was transferred afterward.””
“To where?””
Howard hesitated.
“An account connected to a separate investment group.””
My voice became quiet.
“Whose account?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
He didn’t have to.
I already knew.
“Ethan.””
Howard nodded.
I closed my eyes.
For years, I had believed I saved my husband’s dream.
Now I wasn’t sure what I saved.
That night, I confronted him.
He was sitting in the living room.
The same room where his family had celebrated while I stood upstairs.
“Did you use my money to create another investment?””
His face changed.
“What?””
“Answer me.””
He stood.
“Claire, who told you?””
“That’s not the question.””
Silence.
Then he looked away.
And that was enough.
“You did.””
“Claire, listen—”
“No.””
My voice surprised even me.
“You listen.””
He stopped.
“You told me you were losing everything. I helped you because I loved you.””
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
He didn’t answer.
“After ten years? Twenty?””
“It wasn’t like that.””
“Then what was it like?””
He rubbed his face.
“I was trying to build something for us.””
I looked at him.
“For us?””
“Yes.””
“The house was for us?””
“Yes.””
“The company was for us?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did your family believe they owned everything?””
He had no response.
The next morning, Margaret arrived.
She didn’t apologize.
She came angry.
“You need to stop this.””
I looked at her.
“Stop what?””
“Destroying Ethan’s reputation.””
I almost laughed.
“His reputation?””
“Yes.””
I stepped closer.
“Margaret, do you know what reputation means?””
She stared.
“It means what people believe about you.””
I held up the file.
“And this is what he actually did.””
Her expression changed.
For the first time, I saw uncertainty.
“You don’t understand business.””
“No.””
I looked at her.
“I understand trust.””
She left quickly.
But Ethan stayed.
That night, he sat beside Noah’s bed.
I watched from the doorway.
He whispered:
“I’m sorry, buddy.””
Noah looked sleepy.
“For what?””
Ethan swallowed.
“For making Mommy sad.””
Noah looked at him.
“Mommy cries when people hurt her?””
Ethan looked toward the door.
He saw me.
“I think sometimes she does.””
Noah hugged him.
“Then don’t hurt her.””
The simplicity of a child’s wisdom broke something in me.
Later, Ethan found me outside.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at the stars.
“I believe you’re sorry.””
He looked surprised.
“But?””
“But I don’t know if sorry fixes twelve years.””
He nodded slowly.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
The color disappeared from his face.
“What?””
A pause.
“No, that’s impossible.””
He looked at me.
“Who?””
His voice became barely audible.
“Daniel.””
I froze.
Ethan ended the call.
“What did he say?””
He looked terrified.
“He said he has proof.””
“Proof of what?””
Ethan swallowed.
“That the company rescue wasn’t the only thing he hid.””
I stared at him.
Then my phone received another message.
This time, it wasn’t from Daniel.
It was from someone I never expected.
Margaret.
May you like
The message contained only one sentence.
“Claire, you need to hear the truth about why Ethan married you.””
