Chapter 9: The Truth Hidden Inside The Necklace

For a long moment, Sarah couldn't move.

The small piece of paper sat on the concrete floor between us.

A piece of paper that had been hidden inside a necklace for years.

A piece of paper that somehow held the truth Richard Whitmore had spent his entire life trying to bury.

Sarah stared at it like it was something dangerous.

Maybe it was.

Because secrets could hurt people just as much as weapons.

Michael slowly bent down and picked it up.

His hands were shaking.

He read the words again.

"If you found this, Richard knows the truth is still alive.""

He looked at Sarah.

"Mom wrote this?""

Sarah nodded.

"I never knew.""

Michael turned the paper over.

"There's nothing else.""

Jack walked closer.

"Maybe there's something hidden.""

He carefully examined the pendant.

"The necklace itself.""

Sarah looked confused.

"What?""

Jack pointed at the metal.

"Your mother didn't hide a note inside something she thought you'd lose.""

He looked at the pendant.

"She hid it inside something you would never throw away.""

Sarah touched the necklace.

A memory crossed her face.

"My mother gave this to me on my seventh birthday.""

Michael looked at her.

"She never took it off you.""

Sarah nodded.

"She said it was a promise.""

"A promise of what?""

Sarah swallowed.

"I don't know.""

A loud sound suddenly came from outside.

Everyone turned.

A vehicle door slammed.

Then another.

Richard's people were moving.

Jack looked toward the garage entrance.

"We don't have much time.""

Michael looked at Sarah.

"You need to remember.""

She looked at him.

"Remember what?""

"Anything your mother said.""

Sarah closed her eyes.

The room became quiet.

Everyone waited.

"My mother...""

She paused.

"She used to tell me stories.""

"What kind of stories?"" I asked.

"About a bird.""

Sarah looked confused by her own memory.

"A little bird trapped in a cage.""

Michael frowned.

"What does that mean?""

Sarah shook her head.

"I don't know.""

Jack looked at the necklace again.

"Maybe she wasn't telling a story.""

Sarah opened her eyes.

"What?""

"Maybe she was giving you a clue.""

The garage went silent.

Michael looked at him.

"You think the necklace has a location?""

Jack nodded.

"Or a key.""

Sarah stared at the pendant.

"My mother knew something would happen.""

She looked sick.

"She prepared this.""

Michael's voice became quiet.

"She knew Dad would come after us.""

A heavy silence followed.

Then Tyler spoke.

Everyone looked at him.

"I know where the key is.""

Sarah's expression changed.

"What?""

Tyler looked exhausted.

"Your mother gave something to me.""

Michael immediately moved toward him.

"You.""

Tyler looked at him.

"I know what you're thinking.""

"You were involved.""

"Yes.""

Tyler looked down.

"But that doesn't mean I wanted this.""

Sarah stared.

"What did she give you?""

Tyler hesitated.

"A location.""

Nobody spoke.

"Where?""

Tyler looked toward the garage door.

"Somewhere Richard would never look.""

Jack nodded.

"Where?""

Tyler took a breath.

"The old Whitmore family house.""

Sarah frowned.

"That house burned down.""

Tyler looked at her.

"No.""

She froze.

"What?""

"It was reported as destroyed.""

Tyler looked at Michael.

"But your father never wanted anyone knowing what was underneath it.""

Michael stared.

"Underneath?""

Tyler nodded.

"There was a hidden room.""

Jack's eyes narrowed.

"Of course there was.""

Tyler continued.

"Your mother stored everything there.""

Sarah looked at the flash drive.

"The original evidence.""

Tyler nodded.

"The real evidence.""

A sudden pounding hit the garage door.

Everyone stopped.

Richard's voice came through the speaker.

"You are running out of time.""

Jack looked at the men.

"We move now.""

Sarah looked toward the door.

"What about Emma?""

Michael's expression hardened.

"We get her first.""

Tyler shook his head.

"Richard won't leave her unprotected.""

"We know.""

Michael looked at him.

"That's why you're coming with us.""

Tyler looked surprised.

"Why?""

Michael's face was cold.

"Because my father trusts you.""

Tyler laughed bitterly.

"Not anymore.""

"Exactly.""

A few minutes later, we were moving.

Not away from the fight.

Toward it.

Jack split everyone into groups.

Tony stayed with Sarah and Michael.

The rest of us prepared the bikes.

I watched Sarah as she climbed onto the back of my Harley.

A few hours earlier, she had arrived terrified.

Now she was heading straight toward the man who had destroyed her family.

"You sure you're ready?"" I asked.

She looked at me.

"No.""

I nodded.

"Good answer.""

She almost smiled.

"I'm still scared.""

"That's normal.""

She looked ahead.

"My whole life, I thought fear meant I was weak.""

I started the engine.

"It doesn't.""

She looked at me.

"It means you know something matters.""

For a moment, she said nothing.

Then she held on.

We left the garage.

But we weren't alone.

Richard's vehicles followed.

He wanted us to know.

He wanted us afraid.

He wanted a chase.

So we gave him one.

Because sometimes the only way to beat someone who thinks they control the road...

Is to stop following their map.

The old Whitmore house sat outside town.

Abandoned.

Forgotten.

At least that's what everyone thought.

The gates were broken.

The windows were covered.

The property looked empty.

But Michael walked through the front door like he had been there yesterday.

"He kept it.""

Sarah looked around.

"Why?""

"Because he never throws away anything connected to power.""

Tyler walked behind us.

"You should see the basement.""

Sarah looked at him.

"You've been here?""

Tyler nodded.

"Once.""

"What happened?""

His expression changed.

"Your father showed me what happens when people betray him.""

Nobody asked more.

We found the hidden entrance behind an old wall panel.

Michael pressed a small section of wood.

A click echoed.

The wall opened.

Behind it was a staircase.

Dark.

Cold.

Waiting.

Sarah grabbed my arm.

"I don't want to know what's down there.""

I looked at her.

"But you need to.""

She nodded.

We walked down.

At the bottom was a room.

Not a storage room.

An archive.

Boxes.

Documents.

Photographs.

Hard drives.

Everything Richard Whitmore had spent years hiding.

Michael picked up a file.

Then stopped.

His face changed.

"What?""

He handed it to Sarah.

Inside was a photograph.

Her mother.

Michael.

Sarah.

And another child.

A baby.

Sarah stared.

"Who is that?""

Michael looked confused.

"I don't know.""

Tyler stepped closer.

Then his face went pale.

"No.""

Sarah looked at him.

"What?""

Tyler stared at the picture.

"That's impossible.""

Michael grabbed the photo.

"Who is that?""

Tyler whispered:

"Your father's first child.""

Nobody moved.

Sarah looked at him.

"That's not possible.""

Tyler looked terrified.

"Your father told everyone that child died.""

Michael looked at the picture again.

"Who is it?""

Tyler pointed at the baby.

Then slowly looked at Sarah.

"That's the person your father has been protecting all these years.""

A sound came from upstairs.

Footsteps.

Everyone froze.

Someone was inside the house.

Jack looked toward the stairs.

"He's here.""

Michael grabbed the file.

Sarah held the necklace.

And then Richard Whitmore appeared at the top of the staircase.

Alone.

Calm.

Smiling.

"I was wondering how long it would take you to find it.""

Nobody spoke.

Richard looked directly at Sarah.

"You finally opened your mother's gift.""

Sarah stepped forward.

"You knew.""

Richard smiled.

"Of course.""

"Then why let me find it?""

His smile faded slightly.

"Because I wanted you to understand something.""

He looked at the photograph in her hand.

"Your mother didn't hide the truth from me.""

A pause.

"She hid it from you.""

Sarah stared.

"Why?""

Richard slowly walked down the stairs.

"Because the truth would destroy the family.""

Michael stepped forward.

"What family?""

Richard looked at him.

Then at Sarah.

"The one you never knew existed.""

He stopped.

And said the words that made everyone freeze.

"Sarah...""

A pause.

"You are not my daughter.""

The room went silent.

Richard looked at the photograph.

"You're the reason your mother died.""

Sarah stopped breathing.

And behind Richard, another person stepped out of the shadows.

Someone none of us expected to see.

Emma.

Alive.

But not alone.

May you like

Because the woman holding her hand...

was the same woman in the old photograph.
