Chapter 7: The Secret Sarah Never Told Her Brother

Nobody looked at Richard anymore.

Everyone looked at Sarah.

Because the way her face changed told us one thing.

Richard hadn't lied.

He had found another secret.

A secret Sarah had been hiding.

Michael stared at his sister.

"Sarah.""

She didn't answer.

"Sarah.""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I was going to tell you.""

Michael took a step closer.

"When?""

She looked away.

"When I knew how.""

The garage became completely silent.

I had seen a lot of people hide things.

People hid money.

Mistakes.

Relationships.

But this was different.

This wasn't someone hiding because they wanted to protect themselves.

Sarah looked like she had been carrying something too heavy for too long.

Jack crossed his arms.

"Someone explain.""

Sarah closed her eyes.

"My father had another child.""

Michael froze.

"What?""

She looked at him.

"A daughter.""

The words hit him harder than I expected.

"No.""

Sarah nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

Michael stepped backward.

"That doesn't make sense.""

"It does.""

Sarah wiped her face.

"Because she was never supposed to exist.""

Nobody spoke.

Sarah looked toward the garage door.

Toward the man waiting outside.

"My father's entire life was built on controlling everything.""

She took a shaky breath.

"When Michael disappeared, I thought I had lost my entire family.""

She looked at her brother.

"Then I found her.""

Michael stared.

"Who?""

Sarah whispered:

"Emily.""

The name hung there.

"She's six years old.""

Michael looked confused.

"How?""

Sarah looked down.

"Because our father had another family.""

The garage went silent.

Even Tyler looked shocked.

Sarah continued.

"I found out by accident.""

"When?""

"Last year.""

She sat down slowly.

"I was looking through some old documents from my mother's estate. I found medical records.""

Her voice became quieter.

"They belonged to a child.""

Michael stared at her.

"And you never told me?""

"I tried.""

Her voice cracked.

"Every time I got close, something happened.""

"What do you mean?""

Sarah looked at the door.

"Someone was watching me.""

Michael's expression changed.

"You knew?""

Sarah nodded.

"I knew our father was suspicious.""

She looked at him.

"I didn't know how dangerous he really was.""

Michael ran his hand through his hair.

"So where is Emily?""

Sarah didn't answer.

That was the answer.

Michael's face changed.

"No.""

Sarah whispered:

"Father has her.""

The garage felt colder.

Jack looked at the ceiling.

"So he has two children.""

Sarah nodded.

"And he wants to use both of them.""

Michael walked away.

For the first time since he arrived, he looked lost.

I followed him with my eyes.

A man could handle someone trying to hurt him.

A man could handle someone threatening his own life.

But when someone threatened a child...

That was different.

Especially when that child was innocent.

Richard's voice suddenly came through the speaker again.

"Are we finished with the family reunion?""

Everyone looked toward the door.

Sarah stepped forward.

"Richard.""

A pause.

Then:

"Hello, Sarah.""

Her voice shook.

"Where is Emily?""

Richard didn't answer immediately.

"I knew you would ask.""

"Where is she?""

"You always were the emotional one.""

Sarah's face hardened.

"Don't talk about me like you know me.""

A quiet laugh came through the speaker.

"I know you better than you know yourself.""

Michael stepped toward the speaker.

"Where are the girls?""

Richard ignored him.

"You were always my biggest disappointment, Michael.""

Michael's jaw tightened.

"You tried to kill me.""

"No.""

Richard's voice remained calm.

"You ran away.""

"You destroyed my life.""

"I gave you everything.""

Michael laughed bitterly.

"You gave me fear.""

For the first time, Richard's voice changed slightly.

Only slightly.

But enough.

"You sound like your mother.""

The entire room went quiet.

Michael froze.

Sarah noticed.

"What did you say?""

Richard didn't answer.

Jack looked at Michael.

"Your mother?""

Michael stared at the speaker.

"My mother died.""

Richard said nothing.

And that silence was worse.

Because it meant there was something else.

Another secret.

Another lie.

Sarah looked at her brother.

"What is he talking about?""

Michael didn't answer.

"I don't know.""

Richard finally spoke again.

"You both have spent years believing the stories I created.""

He paused.

"But tonight, you're going to learn the truth.""

Jack stepped closer.

"Stop playing games.""

Richard ignored him.

"Sarah.""

She looked at the speaker.

"You think you know why you ran.""

A pause.

"You don't.""

Sarah's face changed.

"What does that mean?""

"It means your brother was not the only person I protected.""

Michael looked confused.

Richard continued.

"Your mother wasn't killed in an accident.""

The room went silent.

Sarah stopped breathing.

"What?""

Michael stared at the speaker.

"No.""

Richard's voice remained cold.

"She found out too much.""

Sarah shook her head.

"You're lying.""

"Am I?""

A pause.

"Ask your brother.""

Everyone looked at Michael.

Sarah looked at him.

"Michael?""

He didn't answer.

That was the moment everything changed.

Because silence was sometimes a confession.

Sarah's voice became smaller.

"You knew?""

Michael looked at her.

"I knew something was wrong.""

"What does that mean?""

Michael looked away.

"When I started investigating father, I found documents.""

Sarah stepped closer.

"What documents?""

Michael swallowed.

"About mom.""

The garage felt like it was shrinking.

"What did they say?""

Michael closed his eyes.

"They said her death was investigated.""

"And?""

"And the investigation disappeared.""

Sarah stared at him.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I was trying to protect you.""

"No.""

Her voice broke.

"You were doing the same thing everyone else did.""

Michael looked hurt.

"What?""

"Deciding what I could handle.""

The silence between them was painful.

I looked at Jack.

Even he seemed unsure what to say.

Then Tyler suddenly laughed.

Everyone turned.

"You still don't understand.""

Tony looked at him.

"You have something useful to say?""

Tyler looked at Sarah.

"Your father doesn't need the files.""

Sarah stared.

"What?""

Tyler smiled.

"He already has them.""

Nobody moved.

Michael looked at him.

"What are you talking about?""

Tyler looked at the flash drive.

"That drive isn't the original.""

Sarah's face went pale.

"What?""

Tyler continued.

"I helped create the copies.""

Michael stepped forward.

"You were involved from the beginning.""

Tyler didn't deny it.

"I was.""

Sarah looked devastated.

"You lied to me.""

Tyler looked down.

For one second, he looked ashamed.

Then it disappeared.

"I was trying to survive.""

Jack shook his head.

"Everyone has an excuse.""

Tyler looked toward the speaker.

"Richard doesn't forgive mistakes.""

Michael stared at him.

"What did you do?""

Tyler didn't answer.

Then his phone rang.

Everyone looked at it.

Nobody moved.

Finally, Jack picked it up.

The screen showed one word.

*RICHARD.*

Jack answered.

A few seconds passed.

Then Richard said:

"Bring Tyler to the door.""

Everyone looked at Tyler.

Tyler's face turned white.

Richard continued:

"He knows where the real evidence is.""

Sarah stared.

"What evidence?""

Richard's voice came through clearly.

"The evidence that proves what really happened the night your mother died.""

Nobody spoke.

Then Richard said one final sentence.

"And Sarah...""

A pause.

"Ask Tyler why he was there that night.""

Tyler closed his eyes.

Sarah slowly turned toward him.

"Tyler?""

He didn't answer.

Her voice trembled.

"You knew my mother?""

Tyler looked up.

And the fear in his eyes told us the truth before he spoke.

"Sarah...""

May you like

He swallowed.

"I was there when she died.""
