Chapter 9: The Man Who Lied for Forty-Six Years

Richard was waiting when I returned home.

Not the home we shared.

The house that belonged to the life I thought I had.

He stood by the window holding a glass of whiskey.

“You found her.””

It was not a question.

I closed the door.

“Yes.””

He nodded slowly.

“I always knew this day would come.””

I stared at him.

“You knew?””

“I knew Amelia would eventually find you.””

“And you still said nothing?””

Richard looked away.

“I was trying to protect Julian.””

There it was.

The sentence that explained everything.

Not protect me.

Not protect our family.

Protect Julian.

The son who betrayed me.

The son who became his father’s reflection.

“Why?”” I asked.

Richard looked tired.

“Because Julian needed this company.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“He wanted this company.””

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“You never understood him.””

“I raised him.””

“You built him.””

The words shocked me.

Richard stepped closer.

“You taught him that winning mattered.””

I stared at him.

“I taught him discipline.””

“You taught him ambition.””

“And you taught him entitlement.””

The silence between us was unbearable.

For the first time, Richard had no defense.

“I loved you,” he whispered.

I almost believed him.

Almost.

“Love doesn’t stand beside a boat and watch someone drown.””

His eyes filled.

But I did not care.

Because tears were easy.

Regret was easy.

Accountability was harder.

The police investigation moved quickly after Daniel handed over the evidence.

Julian was arrested for attempted murder.

Richard was charged as an accomplice.

The media surrounded the courthouse.

Everyone wanted the story.

The billionaire.

The son.

The betrayal.

But I refused to become entertainment.

I entered the courtroom quietly.

And I left stronger.

The most important moment was not when Julian was sentenced.

It was when Amelia testified.

She walked past me before taking the stand.

She paused.

Then squeezed my hand.

Just once.

A tiny gesture.

But it meant everything.

Afterward, Julian asked to speak with me.

I almost refused.

Then I agreed.

We sat across from each other in a small room.

He looked different.

Smaller.

“You hate me.””

I studied him.

“No.””

He looked surprised.

“I don’t have enough energy left to hate you.””

His eyes dropped.

“Do you remember when I was eight?””

“Yes.””

“You stayed awake all night when I had pneumonia.””

“Yes.””

He swallowed.

“I remember thinking nobody loved me more.””

The sadness in his voice almost broke through.

Almost.

“Then what happened?”” I asked.

He looked away.

“I thought everything would finally be mine.””

I waited.

“My whole life, I was Eleanor Thorne’s son.””

He laughed bitterly.

“Never just Julian.””

I leaned forward.

“You had every opportunity to become your own person.””

“I wasn’t you.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You weren’t.””

He looked at me.

“You’re right.””

For the first time, he admitted it.

“I wasn’t strong enough to stand beside you.””

His voice cracked.

“So I decided to remove you.””

I stood.

The son I loved was still somewhere inside that man.

But I could not save someone who chose to destroy me.

As I reached the door, Julian spoke.

“Mom.””

I stopped.

“There’s something you don’t know.””

I turned.

His face was serious.

“What?””

He hesitated.

“Dad wasn’t the one who started this.””

My blood ran cold.

“What do you mean?””

Julian looked terrified.

“Someone else convinced him.””

“Who?””

He swallowed.

Then whispered:

“The person who knew exactly how to destroy our family.””

The door behind me opened.

Daniel stepped inside.

His expression was pale.

“Eleanor.””

I looked at him.

“What happened?””

He held a file.

“We found the original documents.””

“Which documents?””

“The ones from twenty years ago.””

My stomach tightened.

Daniel looked at Julian.

Then at me.

“Your daughter’s disappearance wasn’t arranged by Richard.””

A cold silence filled the room.

“Then who?””

May you like

Daniel opened the folder.

And the name written inside changed everything.
