Chapter 7: The Second Time She Tried to Silence Me

I read the message over and over.

“I won’t let her ruin my life twice.””

The words didn’t feel real.

They looked like something written by a stranger.

Not my sister.

Not the girl who used to braid my hair when we were children.

Not the person who sat beside me during my first heartbreak and told me I deserved someone who would never hurt me.

But maybe that was the part that hurt most.

Maybe Vanessa had always been capable of this.

Maybe I just refused to see it.

Daniel took the phone from my hands.

His face had gone completely blank.

Not angry.

Not shocked.

Empty.

That was somehow worse.

“Daniel,” Marcus said quietly.

He didn’t respond.

He was staring at the screen.

At the proof that the woman he was going to marry was not just hiding a terrible mistake.

She was still threatening me.

Still trying to control the story.

Still trying to make herself the victim.

“I need to call the police,” Daniel said.

Vanessa’s name appeared again.

She was calling.

Daniel looked at the screen.

Then answered.

“Hello?””

There was a pause.

Then Vanessa’s voice came through the speaker.

“Daniel?””

No one spoke.

She sounded nervous.

Not sorry.

Nervous.

“Where are you?””

Daniel looked at me.

Then at Marcus.

“You know where I am.””

Silence.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“You found him.””

It wasn’t a question.

It was fear.

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Yes.””

“Daniel, listen to me.””

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“That’s what you’ve always wanted, isn’t it?””

“What?””

“For everyone to listen to your version.””

Vanessa breathed in sharply.

“You don’t understand.””

“You’re right.””

Daniel looked at the phone.

“I don’t understand how someone can hurt the person they claim to love and then keep lying for months.””

“I was protecting us.””

“No.””

His answer was immediate.

“You were protecting yourself.””

I watched Marcus lower his head.

Even he knew.

Everyone knew.

Except Vanessa.

Or maybe she knew and simply didn’t care.

“Where is Emily?”” Vanessa asked.

I felt my body tense.

Daniel noticed.

He turned slightly away from the phone.

“She’s safe.””

A pause.

Then Vanessa said:

“Put her on.””

I shook my head.

Daniel saw.

“No.””

“Daniel, please.””

“No.””

Her voice changed.

The fear disappeared.

The anger came back.

“You don’t get to decide that.””

I almost laughed.

Because that sentence was so Vanessa.

Even now.

Even after everything.

She believed she was entitled to control everyone around her.

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“You threatened her.””

“What?””

“You heard me.””

A pause.

Then Vanessa became quiet.

“What are you talking about?””

Daniel looked at the phone.

“The message.””

No response.

“The one you sent Marcus.””

Silence.

Long enough.

Too long.

“Daniel—”

“Don’t.””

His voice cracked slightly.

And I realized something.

He wasn’t just angry.

He was grieving.

He was grieving the person he thought Vanessa was.

“You told him not to talk,” Daniel said.

“I was scared.””

“You said you wouldn’t let Emily ruin your life twice.””

“That’s not what I meant.””

“Then what did you mean?””

Nothing.

No answer.

Because there wasn’t one.

Daniel ended the call.

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Then Marcus spoke.

“She’s going to come after me.””

I looked at him.

“You’re afraid of her.””

He nodded.

“You don’t know what she’s like when she feels trapped.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

Because I did know.

I had just never admitted it.

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“What else haven’t you told us?””

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

“There’s more.””

Of course there was.

There was always more.

“What?”” Daniel asked.

Marcus rubbed his face.

“The pool.””

My stomach dropped.

“What about the pool?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Vanessa didn’t just push you because she was angry.””

I stared.

“What do you mean?””

He hesitated.

“She wanted Daniel to see you as unstable.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Marcus looked down.

“She told me she needed a reason to make you look dramatic.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“She planned it?””

Marcus nodded.

“She told me she knew Daniel was starting to question things.””

I felt sick.

The engagement party.

The smiles.

The laughter.

All of it.

Planned.

“She said if you reacted badly, people would think you were creating drama.””

My hands trembled.

“So she wanted everyone to blame me.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Because Daniel cared about you.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He always asked about your recovery.””

I looked at Daniel.

He looked away.

Marcus continued.

“Vanessa hated that.””

The room became quiet.

Because suddenly the pool incident made sense.

It wasn’t a joke.

It wasn’t a moment of jealousy.

It was a performance.

A way to rewrite the story.

A way to make me look like the problem.

“She told me she needed one final thing,” Marcus said.

“What?””

His expression became serious.

“She wanted Daniel to think you were trying to ruin her wedding.””

I closed my eyes.

The pain in my shoulder suddenly felt small compared to what I was feeling.

My own sister had tried to make me the villain.

Daniel walked outside.

I followed him a few seconds later.

He stood near the parking lot, staring at nothing.

“Are you okay?”” I asked.

He laughed quietly.

“No.””

I nodded.

“Me neither.””

For a while, we just stood there.

Two people who had both been betrayed by the same person.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

I looked at him.

“For what?””

“For not seeing it sooner.””

“You didn’t know.””

“I should have.””

I shook my head.

“Daniel, she fooled everyone.””

He looked at me.

“Not everyone.””

I didn’t answer.

Because I knew what he meant.

The truth had been there.

Hidden in small moments.

The way Vanessa dismissed my pain.

The way she hated attention I never asked for.

The way she always needed to be the person everyone felt sorry for.

A car suddenly pulled into the parking lot.

Both of us turned.

My heart stopped.

It was my mother.

She got out slowly.

Her face was pale.

“Emily.””

I felt anger rise instantly.

“Why are you here?””

She looked at Daniel.

Then at Marcus.

Then back at me.

“Because Vanessa called me.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She said you found everything.””

I stepped back.

“She called you?””

My mother nodded.

“What did she say?””

My mother looked terrified.

“She said if I didn’t help her one more time…”

She stopped.

“What?””

My mother swallowed.

“She said she would tell everyone the accident was your fault.””

I stared.

The insanity of it almost made me laugh.

“She would tell everyone?””

My mother looked down.

“She said she had proof.””

I looked at Daniel.

Then Marcus.

“Proof of what?””

Nobody answered.

My mother’s hands began shaking.

“Emily…”

“What?””

“There’s something I never told you about the night of the accident.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What now?””

She started crying.

“I wasn’t just a witness.””

The world seemed to stop.

“What are you saying?””

My mother looked at me.

And the guilt in her eyes terrified me.

“I was in the car.””

I couldn’t speak.

No.

That wasn’t possible.

My mother had always said she arrived after the crash.

She had always said she found me unconscious.

But now...

Now everything was changing again.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Mrs. Hart, what do you mean you were in the car?””

My mother covered her mouth.

“I was sitting in the passenger seat.””

I stared.

All the lies.

All the secrets.

All the people protecting Vanessa.

It was too much.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

My mother cried.

“Because Vanessa begged me.””

“Begged you to lie?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

My mother looked at me.

And the answer made my blood run cold.

“Because Vanessa wasn’t afraid of losing Daniel.””

I waited.

She whispered:

“She was afraid of you remembering what happened before the crash.””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“Before the crash?””

My mother nodded.

“There was an argument.””

“Between who?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Between you and Vanessa.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t remember.””

“That’s what she wanted.””

A chill moved through me.

“What did she do?””

My mother looked toward the ground.

Then she said the words I never expected to hear.

“Vanessa didn’t just cause the accident.””

I froze.

“She caused the reason you were driving that night.””

And suddenly, the memory I had lost after the crash began to return.

Not all of it.

Just one moment.

One sentence.

One thing Vanessa said before everything went black.

“You always take everything from me.””

I looked at my sister’s name on my phone.

Because at that moment, I finally understood.

May you like

The pool wasn’t the first time Vanessa tried to hurt me.

It was the second.
