Chapter 6: The Man Who Ran Away

The name hung in the air.

Marcus.

For months, that name had been nothing more than a shadow.

A person I never saw.

A person I never knew.

A person everyone seemed determined to protect.

But now he was real.

He was somewhere out there.

And for the first time since the accident, I had the chance to look at the person who changed my life.

Daniel ended the call.

His expression was unreadable.

“Where is he?”” I asked.

He looked at me carefully.

“Emily…”

“Where is he?””

Vanessa stood suddenly.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

She shook her head.

“No, you can’t.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“Why?””

Her mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Because she knew.

She had run out of excuses.

“Vanessa,” Daniel said quietly, “why are you afraid of me finding him?””

She looked away.

That was the answer.

Again.

Always the same.

Silence.

Avoidance.

A hidden truth waiting to be dragged into the light.

“I asked you a question,” Daniel said.

Vanessa wiped her tears.

“He’ll make everything worse.””

I stared at her.

“Worse for who?””

She looked at me.

And for a second, I saw guilt.

Real guilt.

But it disappeared quickly.

“For everyone.””

“No,” I said.

My voice surprised even me.

“For you.””

She didn’t respond.

Daniel grabbed his jacket.

“I’m going.””

Vanessa stepped toward him.

“Daniel, please.””

He stopped.

“Please what?””

Her voice became desperate.

“Don’t do this.””

“Do what?””

“Destroy everything.””

He looked at her.

“You destroyed it the moment you decided Emily didn’t deserve the truth.””

The words cut through the room.

Vanessa looked at me.

“Emily, say something.””

I didn’t.

Because I had spent years saying something.

I had defended her.

Explained her.

Forgiven her.

And somehow, she always ended up standing taller while I carried the damage.

Daniel opened the door.

“Emily, come with me.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because you deserve to hear it from him.””

I knew he was right.

I grabbed my coat.

Vanessa moved closer.

“Don’t go.””

I looked at her.

The old version of me wanted to comfort her.

The old version of me wanted to say everything would be okay.

But that version of me was the woman who believed love meant absorbing someone else’s mistakes.

She was gone.

“I’m sorry,” Vanessa whispered.

I stopped.

Those words sounded different.

Not because they fixed anything.

They didn’t.

But because they were the first words she had said without defending herself.

I looked back.

“Are you?””

She started crying.

“I don’t know how to fix this.””

I nodded slowly.

“That’s the first honest thing you’ve said.””

Then I walked away.

The drive was quiet.

Too quiet.

Daniel kept both hands on the steering wheel.

The city lights moved across the windshield.

I watched them pass.

A few months ago, I had been a completely different person.

I worried about normal things.

Work.

Bills.

Dinner plans.

Now I was sitting beside the man who was supposed to marry my sister, driving to meet the man who caused my accident.

Life could change in one second.

One careless decision.

One person choosing themselves over you.

“Are you sure you want to do this?”” Daniel asked.

I looked out the window.

“No.””

He glanced at me.

“But I need to.””

He nodded.

“I understand.””

I looked at him.

“You loved her.””

His jaw tightened.

“Yes.””

“Do you still?””

The question surprised him.

He was quiet for a moment.

Then he answered honestly.

“I don’t know.””

I respected that.

Because honesty was something I had been missing for a long time.

“She wasn’t always like this,” he said.

I looked down.

“Maybe.””

“You don’t believe me.””

“I believe you.””

“Then why did you say maybe?””

I sighed.

“Because I think people show you who they are when they think there are no consequences.””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because he knew.

A few minutes later, we pulled into a small parking lot outside an old apartment building.

My stomach tightened.

“This is where he is?””

Daniel nodded.

“My friend found him.””

“Your friend?””

“He works in private investigations.””

I looked at him.

“You investigated my sister?””

“I investigated the accident.””

A pause.

“Then I found your sister.””

The words hurt.

Because Vanessa had been right about one thing.

Everything was falling apart.

But it wasn’t because of me.

It was because the truth had finally arrived.

We walked toward the building.

Before Daniel could knock, the door opened.

A man stood there.

Tall.

Dark hair.

Early thirties.

His face changed when he saw me.

Not Daniel.

Me.

He knew exactly who I was.

“You’re Emily.””

I froze.

The way he said my name made my skin crawl.

Not like he was meeting me.

Like he had been expecting me.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Marcus.””

The man looked nervous.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

I stared at him.

“You know who I am.””

His eyes dropped.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

No answer.

“Why do you know me?””

He looked away.

And that was when I understood.

He had been watching.

Following.

Knowing.

While I was trying to rebuild my life.

“You knew I survived.””

His face changed.

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“And you still stayed hidden.””

Marcus swallowed.

“I was scared.””

I almost laughed.

Everyone was scared.

Everyone had a reason.

“You were scared?””

“Yes.””

“You left me in that car.””

“I didn’t know if you were alive.””

The words hit me.

“You didn’t know?””

He looked ashamed.

“I panicked.””

I stepped closer.

“Did Vanessa tell you to run?””

Silence.

Then he nodded.

Slowly.

“Yes.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Why?””

Marcus looked between us.

“Because she said if I stayed, everything would be ruined.””

I stared.

“Everything?””

He looked at me.

“She said Daniel would leave her.””

Of course.

Always Daniel.

Always the image.

Always the perfect life.

“What exactly happened that night?””

Marcus sat down.

Like his legs couldn’t hold him anymore.

“I was supposed to meet Vanessa.””

“For what?””

“She wanted to end things.””

I frowned.

“She told me she was choosing Daniel.””

I looked at Daniel.

His face remained cold.

“She was pregnant,” Marcus continued.

The room went silent.

“She didn’t know how to tell Daniel.””

I looked at him.

“And then?””

“We argued.””

“About the baby?””

He nodded.

“She said she couldn’t lose everything.””

My hands curled into fists.

“So you drove away angry.””

“Yes.””

“And crashed.””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

I waited.

I needed him to say it.

Not Vanessa.

Not my mother.

Him.

“I lost control.””

The room became quiet.

“I hit the other car.””

My breath caught.

“And then?””

He looked at the floor.

“I got out.””

“While I was inside?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His voice broke.

“Because Vanessa told me to leave.””

I felt tears burn my eyes.

Not sadness.

Something else.

A pain so deep it felt empty.

“She told you to leave me.””

Marcus nodded.

“She said if you died, she would take care of everything.””

The words were barely audible.

But they destroyed me.

If you died.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked just as shocked.

Marcus continued.

“I thought Vanessa would call for help.””

I whispered:

“But she didn’t.””

“No.””

“Why?””

He looked at me.

“Because she called your mother first.””

My heart stopped.

Another piece.

Another betrayal.

Another person choosing silence.

Then Marcus reached into a drawer beside him.

He pulled out a small object.

A phone.

Old.

Cracked.

He placed it on the table.

“I kept this because I knew one day someone would come looking.””

Daniel picked it up.

“What is this?””

Marcus looked at me.

“The phone Vanessa used that night.””

My blood ran cold.

“What’s on it?””

Marcus swallowed.

“Everything.””

Daniel turned it on.

The screen lit up.

A list of old messages appeared.

Then one conversation.

With Vanessa.

The final message she sent him that night was visible.

Only seven words.

Seven words that changed everything.

“Leave. I’ll handle Emily.””

I stared at the screen.

My entire body went numb.

Because for months, I had wondered why my sister lied.

Why she hid the truth.

Why she pushed me into that pool.

Now I finally understood.

Vanessa wasn’t trying to hide what happened.

She was trying to hide what she did afterward.

Daniel looked at the phone.

Then at me.

And before anyone could speak, another message appeared.

A new notification.

From Vanessa.

Sent just seconds ago.

Marcus looked at the screen.

His face turned pale.

“What?””

Daniel grabbed the phone.

I leaned closer.

The message was only one sentence.

“Marcus, don’t say anything. I already took care of Emily once.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

And then Daniel whispered the words that made my blood run cold.

“She’s not talking about the accident.””

I looked at him.

“What do you mean?””

Daniel turned the phone toward me.

There was one more line beneath Vanessa’s message.

One line I hadn’t seen.

May you like

One line that explained why my sister had pushed me into that pool.

“I won’t let her ruin my life twice.””
