Chapter 6: The Promise He Never Broke

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

Marcus stood beneath the flashing red-and-blue lights, his injured shoulder pressed against a blood-soaked cloth, while my mother's notebook remained open in my hands.

His handwriting was beneath her final words.

*I promised her I would make sure Nia never learned the truth.*

I looked at him.

“You wrote this?””

Marcus swallowed.

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Ten years ago.””

My laugh came out broken.

“Ten years.””

“Nia—”

“Don't.””

He stopped.

I closed the notebook.

“You lied to me for ten years.””

His eyes dropped.

“Yes.””

The police entered the storage unit, but I barely noticed them.

One officer approached Daniel.

Another spoke with Vanessa.

A paramedic moved toward Marcus.

I stood perfectly still.

The man I'd loved for ten years had known something about my mother.

Something terrible.

And he'd chosen silence.

The paramedic touched Marcus's shoulder.

“You need stitches.””

“I'll be fine.””

“No, you won't,” I snapped.

Everyone looked at me.

I pointed toward the exit.

“Go get treated.””

Marcus nodded.

He didn't argue.

As the paramedic led him away, Daniel approached me.

“There's something you need to understand.””

I looked at him.

“I'm done understanding things for everyone else.””

He accepted that.

“You're angry because Marcus kept the truth from you.””

“Yes.””

“You should be.””

“Then why are you defending him?””

“I'm not.””

Daniel reached into his coat.

He pulled out a folded sheet of paper.

“I'm telling you what your mother asked me to tell you if she ever died before you knew the truth.””

I stared at the paper.

“You had this?””

“Yes.””

“For ten years?””

“Yes.””

My hands curled into fists.

“Why does everyone know something except me?””

Daniel's face tightened.

“Because your mother wanted you protected.””

“Protected from my own life?””

“Protected from the people who destroyed hers.””

I opened the paper.

My mother's handwriting covered the page.

*Daniel, if Richard ever comes after Nia, tell her everything. But only when Marcus is beside her.*

I looked up.

“Why Marcus?””

Daniel's eyes shifted toward the hallway.

“Because your mother trusted him.””

I almost laughed.

“She trusted him enough to lie to me?””

“She trusted him enough to sacrifice his reputation for you.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel sighed.

“Your father wasn't just involved with Richard's family. He was the one who started the entire scheme.””

My chest tightened.

“My father?””

“He used your mother's name to move money.””

“Why?””

“Because she was a nurse. Nobody suspected her.””

I shook my head.

“My mother didn't know.””

“Not at first.””

Daniel explained that my father had forged signatures, opened accounts, and used my mother's employment records to make the transactions appear legitimate.

When she discovered what he'd done, she confronted him.

He threatened her.

She secretly copied everything.

Then she went to Richard's father.

That was when the situation became dangerous.

“Why would Richard's father help her?””

“He didn't.””

Daniel looked away.

“He wanted the evidence destroyed.””

“And Richard?””

“Richard was ordered to retrieve it.””

I felt sick.

“So my mother was killed because she had evidence.””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn't the police find any of this?””

“Because your father had already made sure nobody would believe her.””

My eyes filled with tears.

“He made her look guilty.””

Daniel nodded.

“He destroyed her reputation after she died.””

I covered my mouth.

All my childhood, I'd heard whispers.

That my mother had been unstable.

That she'd struggled financially.

That she'd made bad decisions.

I'd defended her without knowing why.

Now I knew.

Someone had spent years turning the victim into the suspect.

A police officer approached.

“Ms. Bennett?””

I looked at him.

“We found something else.””

He held up a small evidence bag.

Inside was my missing wedding ring.

The one I'd believed Vanessa had stolen.

I stared.

“Where did you find it?””

“In Richard Hale's vehicle.””

My heart stopped.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“I gave it to him.””

I turned.

“You?””

She nodded through tears.

“He told me he needed something that would make you distrust Marcus.””

My voice went cold.

“You stole my ring.””

“Yes.””

“From our house?””

“Yes.””

“The night the window broke?””

She nodded.

“I had the key.””

I looked at Marcus's empty chair.

The missing ring had never been evidence of a failing marriage.

It had been evidence of an enemy standing inside my home.

The police officer continued.

“We also found a phone.””

He held up another bag.

“Richard was recording conversations.””

“Can I hear them?””

The officer hesitated.

“Not here.””

“Why?””

“Because one of the recordings appears to involve your father.””

My heart stopped.

“Let me hear it.””

He shook his head.

“Not until we process it.””

I wanted to scream.

Instead, I turned toward the hallway.

Marcus was sitting on a medical chair while a paramedic wrapped his shoulder.

He looked exhausted.

But when our eyes met, he stood.

I walked toward him.

“Did you know about the ring?””

“No.””

“Did you know Vanessa had access to our house?””

“No.””

“Did you know Richard was recording you?””

“No.””

I studied his face.

“What exactly did my mother give you?””

Marcus hesitated.

“The recording.””

“The one inside your ring?””

“Yes.””

“You still have it?””

He nodded.

“Where?””

“I don't.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What do you mean?””

“Richard took it.””

“When?””

“Tonight.””

I stared at him.

“Then how did you know what was on it?””

“I didn't.””

“Marcus.””

He looked directly at me.

“I only knew your mother had recorded something. I never listened to it.””

I didn't know whether to believe him.

Then he reached into his pocket.

He pulled out his phone.

“There is one thing I never told you.””

“What?””

“Your mother called me the night she died.””

I froze.

“What?””

Marcus's voice broke.

“She called me at 11:43 p.m.””

“Why?””

“She said someone was following her.””

“And you?””

“I drove toward her.””

My breath caught.

“Were you there when she crashed?””

“I arrived minutes after.””

“Did you see her?””

“Yes.””

“Was she alive?””

Marcus looked down.

“For a few seconds.””

My knees weakened.

“What did she say?””

He closed his eyes.

“She told me to protect you.””

“What else?””

“She said, ‘He knows about the notebook.’”

“Who?””

“I don't know.””

“Marcus, you must know.””

“I didn't.””

Then he looked at me.

“She gave me one last name.””

I waited.

He whispered it.

“Bennett.””

My father's name.

I felt the world tilt again.

But Marcus wasn't finished.

“She wasn't talking about your father.””

My heart stopped.

“Then who?””

He looked at Daniel.

Daniel's face had gone pale.

May you like

Marcus whispered,

“She was talking about someone else in your family.””
