Chapter 1: The Name on the List
The teacher looked at Aaron as if he had just walked into the wrong family.
Then she lowered her clipboard and asked, quietly, "Mr. Blake… why are you listed as not authorized to pick up Lily?""
For one strange second, the noise of Brookhaven Elementary seemed to thin around him.
The buses still hissed. Parents still called to their children. A crossing guard blew two sharp notes on her whistle near the parking lot.
But Aaron heard only that sentence.
He looked down at Lily.
Her smile was gone.
She had stopped bouncing on her sneakers.
"What?"" Aaron asked.
The teacher swallowed.
"I need to see your identification.""
Aaron stared at her.
He had picked Lily up from this school dozens of times.
He knew the front-office secretary by name. He had signed field-trip forms. He had attended parent-teacher conferences. He had sat on tiny plastic chairs during the school’s literacy night while Lily read him a book about dolphins.
He even knew which hallway smelled like crayons.
"Ms. Carter," Aaron said, keeping his voice low, "you know me.""
"I do.""
"And I'm Lily's father.""
"I know.""
"Then why are you saying I'm not authorized?""
Ms. Carter glanced at the sheet again.
Her fingers tightened around the clipboard.
"Because the system was changed this morning.""
Aaron felt Lily's hand disappear from his.
She stepped behind him.
He turned.
"Lily?""
She pressed her face against the back of his jacket.
Aaron's stomach dropped.
Ms. Carter crouched slightly, trying to soften her voice.
"Lily, sweetheart, I just need you to stay with me for a minute, okay?""
Lily shook her head.
"No.""
Aaron looked between them.
"What system change?""
Ms. Carter hesitated.
"I can't discuss another parent's information.""
"I'm not asking about another parent. I'm asking why my daughter is standing here scared because her father supposedly can't take her home.""
A woman standing near the curb glanced over.
Then another.
Aaron noticed.
The pickup lane had a way of turning private problems into public entertainment.
Ms. Carter's cheeks reddened.
"Please don't make this harder.""
Aaron almost laughed.
"Harder for who?""
She didn't answer.
Instead, she asked, "Can I call the office?""
"You should.""
She turned away.
Aaron crouched in front of Lily.
Her curls had loosened from the puffs. One purple bead hung crookedly near her ear.
"Baby, look at me.""
She slowly lifted her face.
"Am I in trouble?""
The question hit him harder than anything else.
"No.""
"But Mrs. Carter said I have to wait.""
"That's because something got mixed up.""
Lily stared at him.
"Mommy said you weren't supposed to come.""
Aaron froze.
The sounds around him returned all at once.
"She said what?""
Lily immediately looked down.
"Nothing.""
"No, sweetheart. What did Mommy say?""
Lily rubbed the toe of her sneaker against the pavement.
"She said Uncle Marcus was picking me up.""
Aaron's jaw tightened.
"Uncle Marcus?""
Lily nodded.
Aaron knew Marcus.
His wife's younger brother.
He had no idea Marcus was supposed to pick Lily up.
"Did Mommy tell your teacher that?""
"I don't know.""
Aaron stood.
Ms. Carter was returning with a woman Aaron recognized as Principal Denise Holloway.
Principal Holloway was in her fifties, Black, composed, and usually warm. Today, she carried herself with the careful stiffness of someone walking through a room full of broken glass.
"Mr. Blake," she said.
"Principal Holloway.""
"I'd like to speak with you in the office.""
Aaron looked at Lily.
"Can I take my daughter with me?""
Principal Holloway exchanged a glance with Ms. Carter.
"At the moment, Lily needs to remain here until we verify the authorization.""
Aaron's pulse began to climb.
"Verify what?""
"I don't want to discuss this in the pickup lane.""
"Neither do I.""
"Then please come inside.""
Lily reached for his hand.
Aaron took it.
Principal Holloway shook her head gently.
"Mr. Blake—"
"I'm not leaving her.""
Silence.
Finally, Holloway nodded.
"All right.""
They walked inside.
The school smelled of disinfectant, paper, and the faint sweetness of cafeteria cookies.
Aaron kept Lily beside him.
At the office, Principal Holloway closed the door.
She sat behind her desk.
Aaron remained standing.
"Tell me what's happening.""
Holloway opened a folder.
"This morning at 9:17, we received an updated custody instruction concerning Lily.""
Aaron stared at her.
"Custody?""
"Yes.""
"From whom?""
"Your wife.""
His heart began beating harder.
"Emma changed my pickup authorization?""
Holloway didn't answer immediately.
That was answer enough.
Aaron's phone vibrated.
He pulled it from his pocket.
A message from Emma.
*Don't go to the house.*
He stared at it.
Another message arrived.
*Aaron, please. You need to trust me.*
He looked up.
Principal Holloway was watching him.
"What did she tell you?"" Aaron asked.
Holloway's expression changed.
"She told us that if you attempted to pick Lily up today, we were not to release her.""
Aaron's mouth went dry.
"Why?""
Holloway slid the folder across the desk.
"We were instructed to contact the police.""
Lily gasped.
Aaron looked down at his daughter.
Then at the folder.
Then at the locked office door.

And for the first time that afternoon, he wondered whether Emma had been trying to keep Lily away from him—
or keep someone else from finding her.
