Chapter 8: The Man Who Owned Our Secrets
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The hospital hallway became completely silent.
A man I had never seen before stood ten feet away from me, claiming to be the person whose existence could destroy everything I knew about myself.
My father.
Not the man who raised me.
Not the man whose photographs filled my childhood home.
Not the man whose voice I remembered telling me bedtime stories.
This stranger.
Richard Vale.
The same man whose name appeared in every secret.
The same man connected to Vanessa.
The same man everyone believed was dead.
I stared at him.
My mind rejected the words before my heart even had a chance to react.
“No.””
The man’s expression changed slightly.
Not anger.
Not surprise.
Sadness.
“I know this is difficult.””
I laughed.
A short, broken laugh.
“Difficult?””
I stepped forward.
“You disappeared.””
His eyes lowered.
“I had reasons.””
“You don’t get to say that.””
My voice echoed through the hallway.
“You don’t get to walk into my life after decades and call yourself my father.””
Detective Reed moved between us.
“Sir, you need to explain who you are.””
The man looked at him.
“My name is Richard Vale.””
“I know who you claim to be.””
“I’m not claiming anything.””
He reached into his coat slowly.
Everyone tensed.
Then he pulled out an old photograph.
He handed it to Reed.
The detective studied it.
Then his expression changed.
“What is this?””
Richard looked at me.
“Proof.””
Reed turned the photograph around.
My stomach dropped.
It was a picture of my mother.
A young version of her.
Standing beside Richard.
And beside them…
Was me.
A baby.
A baby I had always been told belonged to my father.
But the photograph was dated three months before my parents’ wedding.
My hands went cold.
“No.””
Richard looked at me.
“Your mother wanted to tell you.””
“Then why didn’t she?””
“Because she believed she was protecting you.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
My voice became bitter.
“Everyone keeps using that excuse.””
Richard didn’t argue.
Because he knew I was right.
For years, every person who lied to me had used the same words.
Protecting you.
Protecting Oliver.
Protecting the family.
But all they had done was build a prison around the truth.
“Why now?”” I asked.
Richard looked toward Claire’s room.
“Because Claire found the evidence.””
My heart tightened.
“You knew about Claire?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Because Claire was the only person who discovered what Vanessa and I were trying to hide.””
The words stopped me.
Vanessa and I.
Not Vanessa’s father.
Not someone else.
Vanessa.
She had been part of it from the beginning.
“You’re admitting it?””
Richard looked at me.
“I’m admitting that mistakes were made.””
I almost lost control.
“Mistakes?””
I stepped closer.
“You destroyed people’s lives.””
He didn’t move.
“You don’t know the full story.””
“I know enough.””
“No.””
His voice became firm.
“You know the version everyone wanted you to know.””
The same sentence Vanessa had used.
The same sentence every person hiding something said.
I looked at Ethan.
He looked just as uncomfortable as I felt.
“You knew he was alive,” I said.
Ethan nodded.
“I suspected.””
“Suspected?””
“My sister spent years searching for the truth.””
He looked toward Claire.
“She found evidence connecting Richard to the hospital records.””
Richard’s expression hardened.
“She shouldn’t have looked.””
My anger returned.
“You threatened her.””
“No.””
“You forced her to leave.””
“I gave her a choice.””
“What choice?””
Richard looked at me.
“The choice to disappear or watch Oliver become part of something dangerous.””
The hallway went silent.
I felt a chill.
“What does that mean?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Detective Brooks stepped forward.
“Mr. Vale, we need answers.””
Richard looked at her.
“Then ask the right questions.””
She frowned.
“Fine.””
She opened her notebook.
“Why were Oliver’s records altered?””
Richard looked at me.
“Because Oliver was never supposed to be involved.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
He looked toward Claire’s room.
“It’s the truth.””
I clenched my jaw.
“Explain.””
Richard took a breath.
“Years ago, my company was involved in a legal battle.””
“With who?””
“Your father.””
My head snapped up.
“My father?””
“The man you believed was your father discovered financial fraud.””
The room went quiet.
“He found out Richard Vale’s company was hiding money.””
Richard nodded.
“He did.””
“So what happened?””
Richard looked away.
“People panicked.””
“People?””
He didn’t answer.
And that told me enough.
Someone had done something terrible.
Someone had erased records.
Someone had created lies.
But why Oliver?
Why my son?
Richard looked at me.
“Because Oliver carried information he didn’t know he had.””
My stomach tightened.
“What information?””
“His birth records.””
I stared.
“That makes no sense.””
“It does.””
He looked toward Oliver.
My son stood silently beside Claire’s room.
Richard’s expression softened.
“The night Oliver was born, the hospital discovered the error.””
“The switched records.””
“Yes.””
“Then why hide it?””
“Because one of those records exposed the truth about my company.””
I shook my head.
“You’re saying a baby’s birth record threatened a company?””
“No.””
Richard’s voice lowered.
“I’m saying the people behind the company threatened anyone who could expose them.””
The words felt heavy.
“Who?””
Richard looked at Vanessa.
But she wasn’t there.
I suddenly realized something.
She had disappeared.
Again.
“When did Vanessa leave?”” I asked.
Nobody answered.
Because everyone was thinking the same thing.
She had heard enough.
She knew Richard was here.
She knew the truth was coming out.
And she ran.
Detective Reed immediately called his team.
But I wasn’t focused on Vanessa anymore.
I was focused on Richard.
“You knew about Oliver.””
“Yes.””
“You knew he was my son.””
“Yes.””
“You knew Vanessa was trying to take him from me.””
Richard looked ashamed.
“Yes.””
My fists tightened.
“And you did nothing?””
His eyes closed briefly.
“I tried.””
“Tried?””
“I warned Claire.””
“You warned Claire?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you warn me?””
He looked at me.
“Because Vanessa had already convinced everyone that you were the problem.””
That sentence hit differently.
Because it was exactly what she had done.
She had slowly separated me from my own instincts.
Made me doubt my son.
Made me doubt myself.
Richard reached into his bag.
He removed another folder.
“This is why Vanessa wanted Oliver hidden.””
Inside were pages of financial records.
Names.
Accounts.
Transfers.
Then I saw something.
My name.
Not on a fake custody document.
On a company agreement.
A company I had never heard of.
“What is this?””
“The company your father created.””
“My father?””
“Your biological father.””
I looked at him.
“Why would I be involved?””
“Because the company was left to you.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Richard pointed to a line.
Beneficiary.
Daniel Carter.
I felt dizzy.
“Then why did I never know?””
“Because the ownership was transferred.””
“To who?””
Richard looked at me.
“Vanessa.””
The room went silent.
My entire body went cold.
“She stole my inheritance.””
“She believed she was taking control of what belonged to her family.””
I looked at the documents again.
“She married me for this?””
Richard didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
The truth was already there.
The woman I trusted.
The woman who raised my son.
The woman who told me she loved me.
Had spent years building a plan around something I never knew existed.
Then Oliver suddenly spoke.
“Dad.””
I turned.
His face was pale.
“What?””
He pointed toward the hospital room.
Claire’s heart monitor was changing.
Doctors rushed inside.
A nurse shouted for help.
Everyone moved.
I followed.
Claire’s eyes were open.
Barely.
But she was awake.
She looked directly at Oliver.
Then at me.
And whispered:
“Daniel…”
I grabbed her hand.
“I’m here.””
Her lips trembled.
“There’s one more thing.””
“What?””
She looked terrified.
“Vanessa didn’t take Oliver because of the records.””
My heart stopped.
“Then why?””
Claire looked at Richard.
Then back at me.
“Because Oliver was the only person who knew where the original file was hidden.””
I looked at Oliver.
He shook his head.
“I don’t know what she means.””
Claire squeezed my hand weakly.
“She does.””
The room froze.
“Who?””
Claire closed her eyes.
Then whispered:
“Vanessa.””
A second later, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered immediately.
Nobody spoke.
Only breathing.
Then Vanessa’s voice came through.
Calm.
Cold.
Different from the woman I knew.
“You finally understand, don’t you?””
My grip tightened.
“Where is Oliver’s file?””
She laughed softly.
“That’s what everyone always wanted.””
“Where are you?””
“Somewhere you should have looked years ago.””
“Vanessa—”
But she interrupted.
“Daniel, if you want the original file…”
A pause.
“And if you want to know why Oliver was chosen…”
My blood ran cold.
“You’ll come alone.””
The call ended.
And the final message appeared on my screen.
An address.
May you like
One I recognized immediately.
Because it was the house where I grew up.
