Chapter 6: The DNA Report That Changed Everything
The drive to St. Matthew’s Hospital felt endless.
Every red light felt like a punishment.
Every second felt stolen.
I sat in the passenger seat while Detective Brooks drove, but I barely noticed the city passing outside the window.
All I could see was Claire.
The woman I thought had walked away from me.
The woman I had spent years trying not to remember.
The woman lying unconscious in a hospital bed, waiting for a DNA confirmation before she would speak to me.
Waiting to tell me something that could change everything.
Beside me, Oliver sat silently.
He had barely spoken since we left the mansion.
I looked at him.
His face was turned toward the window.
“Oliver.””
He didn’t answer immediately.
“Yeah?””
“I’m sorry.””
His eyes stayed outside.
“For what?””
“For not listening.””
A long silence followed.
Then he said quietly:
“I needed you to believe me.””
The words hit harder because he didn’t say them angrily.
He said them like a fact.
Like something he had already accepted.
“I know.””
“No, Dad.””
He finally looked at me.
“You don’t.””
His voice cracked.
“I spent months thinking maybe I was the problem.””
My chest tightened.
“Oliver…”
“I thought maybe Vanessa hated me because I was difficult.””
He looked down at his hands.
“I thought maybe if I tried harder, she would stop being angry.””
I closed my eyes.
Every memory came back.
The dinners where Oliver sat quietly.
The mornings when he avoided Vanessa.
The nights he stayed in his room.
I had seen everything.
I just hadn’t understood.
“I should have protected you.””
He nodded slightly.
“But you didn’t.””
There was no cruelty in his voice.
Only honesty.
And somehow, that hurt more.
When we arrived at the hospital, Ethan was already there.
He stood outside Claire’s room.
For the first time since I met him, he looked broken.
Not mysterious.
Not controlled.
Just a man waiting to find out if someone he loved would wake up.
“How did you find her?”” I asked.
Ethan looked at me.
“She left a trail.””
“What kind of trail?””
“One she hoped I would understand.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
He looked through the glass window at Claire.
“She knew someone would come after her.””
A chill moved through me.
“Who?””
Ethan didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
We both knew.
Vanessa.
But there was something else.
Something bigger.
Detective Brooks walked over holding a file.
“The hospital confirmed the patient’s identity.””
I looked at her.
“It’s Claire?””
“Yes.””
My heart tightened.
“And the DNA test?””
“Still processing.””
I looked through the glass.
Claire looked smaller than I remembered.
Years had passed.
But I still recognized her.
The shape of her face.
The way she held her hands.
The woman who once laughed while cooking dinner in our tiny apartment.
The woman who used to fall asleep on my shoulder while watching movies.
The woman who disappeared before I got the chance to ask why.
“Can I see her?””
Brooks hesitated.
“She hasn’t regained consciousness.””
“I just want to be there.””
After a moment, she nodded.
I walked into the room.
The machines were the loudest sounds.
Beeping.
Breathing.
Reminding me she was still here.
I stood beside the bed.
“Claire.””
The name felt strange.
Like saying it after so many years was something forbidden.
“I don’t know if you can hear me.””
My voice shook.
“But I need you to know something.””
I looked at her face.
“I was angry.””
A tear escaped before I could stop it.
“I was so angry.””
I swallowed.
“I thought you left because you didn’t care.””
The monitor continued its steady rhythm.
“But Oliver thought the same thing.””
I looked toward the door.
“He thought he wasn’t worth staying for.””
My voice broke.
“And I let him believe that.””
For a moment, nothing happened.
Then Claire’s fingers moved.
I froze.
“Claire?””
Her eyelids trembled.
Slowly.
Painfully.
Her eyes opened.
For several seconds, she stared at me like she didn’t know where she was.
Then she whispered:
“Daniel?””
I grabbed her hand.
“Yes.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“No.””
The word was barely audible.
“No, you can’t be here.””
My heart sank.
“Why?””
She looked terrified.
“Because if you’re here…”
She stopped.
“Claire?””
Her eyes moved toward the door.
Then back to me.
“He found out.””
I frowned.
“Who?””
Her breathing became faster.
“Did Vanessa tell you?””
I looked at her.
“She told me enough.””
Claire closed her eyes.
“Enough is dangerous.””
“What does that mean?””
Before she could answer, Ethan entered the room.
“Sis.””
Claire opened her eyes.
“Ethan.””
The emotion between them was immediate.
Years of pain.
Years of searching.
Years of believing they would never see each other again.
“I thought you were dead,” Ethan whispered.
Claire looked away.
“I needed everyone to think that.””
“Why?””
Her eyes moved to me.
“Because I knew they would come after Oliver.””
My heart stopped.
“They?””
Claire looked afraid.
Not confused.
Not weak.
Afraid.
“Daniel, there’s something you need to know.””
I stepped closer.
“Tell me.””
She looked at Ethan.
Then at Oliver, who had quietly entered the room behind me.
The moment she saw him, she started crying.
“Oliver.””
My son froze.
For a moment, he looked like a little boy again.
Not the teenager who had carried secrets.
Not the child who had been afraid.
Just a son seeing his mother.
“Mom?””
Claire covered her mouth.
“I’m sorry.””
Oliver didn’t move.
“I thought you left.””
The pain in his voice was unbearable.
“I know.””
“Why?””
Claire cried silently.
“Because I thought leaving was the only way to keep you alive.””
Oliver looked at me.
Then at her.
“What does that mean?””
Claire reached for him.
He hesitated.
Then stepped closer.
She held his hand.
“I discovered something before you were born.””
“What?””
“That there was someone trying to change your records.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Vanessa.””
Claire shook her head.
“Not only Vanessa.””
The room became quiet.
“Who else?””
Claire looked at me.
“The hospital administrator.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He was involved.””
“Why?””
She took a slow breath.
“Because Oliver wasn’t supposed to be transferred after birth.””
I looked at Ethan.
Then back at her.
“Transferred?””
Claire nodded.
“The night Oliver was born, there was a mistake.””
My heart started pounding.
“What kind of mistake?””
She looked at Oliver.
“Two newborn records were switched.””
Nobody spoke.
The words hung in the room.
“What?””
Claire squeezed Oliver’s hand.
“There was another baby born that night.””
I felt dizzy.
“And?””
“And that baby’s family had power.””
I understood.
Or at least I thought I did.
“Someone wanted the records changed.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Claire’s eyes filled with pain.
“Because the other child was supposed to inherit everything.””
I stared at her.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It will.””
She looked at Oliver.
“The hospital made a mistake. They recorded the wrong identity.””
Oliver whispered:
“So I’m not…”
Claire immediately shook her head.
“No.””
She held his face.
“You are my son.””
Then she looked at me.
“And you are his father.””
The relief lasted only one second.
Because then she added:
“But someone spent years trying to prove otherwise.””
The room went silent.
Detective Brooks stepped forward.
“Claire, who?””
Claire looked toward the door.
Her expression changed.
Like she was afraid someone was listening.
Then she whispered:
“The person who ordered the records changed…”
She stopped.
Her hand tightened around Oliver’s.
“It was someone Daniel trusted.””
My heart dropped.
“Who?””
Claire looked directly at me.
And the answer destroyed the last piece of certainty I had.
“Your brother.””
I froze.
I didn’t have a brother.
Not one who was alive.
Not one connected to Oliver.
Not one who could have done this.
“Claire…”
She shook her head.
“You need to understand.””
Her voice became weaker.
“The man you thought was your father’s only child…”
The monitor beside her suddenly changed.
Doctors rushed in.
The room filled with movement.
Voices.
Commands.
I was pushed backward.
But before Claire lost consciousness again, she looked at me one last time.
And whispered the sentence that changed the entire investigation:
“Daniel… your family history was rewritten before Oliver’s was.””
The doctors pulled the curtain closed.
I stood outside, unable to move.
Then my phone vibrated.
A new message.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
*“Now you know why we needed Oliver gone.””*
And beneath it was a photograph.
A photograph of someone standing outside the hospital room.
Watching Claire.
May you like
Watching us.
It was Vanessa.
