Chapter 4: The Archive Beneath Ashford House
The Ashford estate looked different after midnight.
During the gala, it had been a palace.
Golden lights.
Perfect gardens.
A symbol of generations of wealth.
Now, hidden beneath the darkness, it looked exactly like what it really was.
A fortress.
Simone stared through the windshield as Marcus drove through the private road leading to the property.
Rain tapped against the glass.
Maya sat beside her, reviewing the information they had gathered.
“Private archive,” Maya said quietly.
“I still can’t believe this place has one.””
Simone looked out at the gates ahead.
“Old families don’t just collect money.””
“What do they collect?””
“Secrets.””
The iron gates opened slowly.
No security guard appeared.
No questions were asked.
That was almost worse.
Marcus noticed it too.
“They knew we were coming.””
Simone nodded.
“Yes.””
Maya looked up from the tablet.
“You think Nathan warned them?””
Simone didn’t answer.
Because she had spent the last hour trying to decide what hurt more.
The possibility that her brother betrayed her.
Or the possibility that he was telling the truth and was now in danger.
The car stopped in front of Ashford House.
The building stood three stories tall, built from dark stone with enormous windows overlooking the property.
It had belonged to the Ashford family for nearly a century.
Inside those walls, generations of decisions had been made.
Deals.
Promises.
Betrayals.
Marcus stepped out first.
He scanned the area.
“Clear.””
Simone exited the car.
The front door opened before they reached it.
A woman stood there.
Late fifties.
Gray hair.
Black dress.
Her expression was exhausted.
“Dr. Carter.””
Simone stopped.
“Who are you?””
The woman looked around nervously.
“My name is Evelyn.””
“And your connection to the Ashford family?””
“I worked here for twenty-four years.””
Maya stepped forward.
“House staff?””
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.””
Her eyes moved toward the hallway.
“I managed the private records.””
Simone immediately understood.
The archive.
“You know why I’m here.””
Evelyn swallowed.
“Yes.””
“Where is Nathan?””
The woman looked down.
“I don’t know.””
Simone’s expression hardened.
“Don’t lie to me.””
“I’m not.””
“Then tell me what happened.””
Evelyn hesitated.
Then she stepped aside.
“Come inside.””
The hallway was silent.
Too silent.
The portraits lining the walls showed generations of Ashfords smiling confidently.
Men in expensive suits.
Women wearing jewelry passed down through decades.
Everyone looked untouchable.
Maya stared at them.
“Do these people ever age?””
Evelyn glanced at the portraits.
“They do.””
“Then why don’t they look afraid?””
The older woman stopped walking.
“Because they learned early that fear belongs to people without power.””
The words stayed with Simone.
They entered a hidden room behind a bookshelf.
A keypad appeared on the wall.
Evelyn entered a code.
The door opened.
Behind it was a narrow staircase descending underground.
Maya looked down.
“You’re kidding.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“The Ashfords built the archive during the first major expansion of the estate.””
“Why?””
“To protect information.””
Simone looked at the shelves below.
“Or hide it.””
Evelyn didn’t deny it.
The archive was larger than Simone expected.
Rows of locked cabinets.
Old contracts.
Property records.
Private correspondence.
Decades of history stored away from public eyes.
“This isn’t a record room,” Maya whispered.
“No,” Simone said.
“It’s a graveyard.””
Evelyn looked at her.
“You understand.””
Simone walked toward the nearest cabinet.
“Where is Nathan?””
Evelyn’s face changed.
“He found something he wasn’t supposed to find.””
“What?””
“The original redevelopment contracts.””
Simone turned.
“The ones proving ownership?””
Evelyn nodded.
“He discovered the Ashfords didn’t acquire the land legally.””
Maya looked shocked.
“How much land?””
Evelyn looked down.
“Almost forty percent of the redevelopment zone.””
The room went quiet.
Simone processed the information.
Forty percent.
The Ashford consortium had built a $4.2 billion proposal around assets they might not actually control.
If true, the entire project could collapse.
Thousands of jobs.
Millions in investment.
Public trust.
Everything.
“Who else knows?”” Simone asked.
Evelyn hesitated.
“Daniel.””
Simone’s jaw tightened.
“And Richard?””
“Yes.””
“Victoria?””
Evelyn looked away.
That answer was enough.
Simone walked deeper into the archive.
“So why attack me?””
Evelyn followed.
“Because Daniel believed you were the only person who could stop them.””
Maya frowned.
“That makes no sense. Why would they invite the person who could expose them?””
Evelyn looked at Simone.
“Because they thought they could control you.””
Simone almost smiled.
“They underestimated me.””
“No.””
Evelyn’s voice was quiet.
“They underestimated what you would do after they humiliated you.””
Simone stopped.
The sentence felt familiar.
Because it was true.
The Ashfords had expected anger.
They expected a public reaction.
They expected a scandal.
They did not expect investigation.
A noise echoed from somewhere deeper in the archive.
Everyone froze.
Marcus immediately reached for his radio.
“Someone’s here.””
The lights flickered.
Then went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Maya whispered:
“Simone?””
“I’m here.””
A sound came from the far side of the archive.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Careful.
Someone moving between the shelves.
Marcus turned on his flashlight.
“Show yourself.””
No answer.
The footsteps continued.
Then stopped.
A figure appeared at the end of the aisle.
Simone held her breath.
“Nathan?””
The figure stepped forward.
But it wasn’t Nathan.
It was Daniel Whitmore.
The man who had once taught her everything about finance.
The man whose signature was buried in the documents.
The man she thought had betrayed her.
He looked different.
Not powerful.
Not confident.
Terrified.
“Simone,” Daniel said.
Marcus moved between them.
“Don’t come closer.””
Daniel raised his hands.
“I’m not here to hurt her.””
Simone stared at him.
“Then why are you here?””
Daniel looked around the archive.
“Because I knew you would find this place.””
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“And you still let it happen?””
His face tightened.
“I tried to stop it.””
Simone laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because she was tired of hearing the same excuse.
“Everyone tries to stop it after it happens.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
He took a slow breath.
“Victoria’s attack wasn’t supposed to be the beginning.””
Simone frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“It was supposed to be the end.””
The words chilled the room.
Daniel continued.
“The plan was simple. You would arrive at the gala. Victoria would provoke you.
You would leave. The trustees would announce a temporary delay in the funding vote. Then they would blame the delay on your company.””
Maya looked confused.
“Why blame her?””
Daniel looked at Simone.
“Because they needed someone powerful to sacrifice.””
Simone’s eyes narrowed.
“Why?””
“Because the money was already gone.””
Silence.
“What money?””
Daniel stepped closer.
“The investment money.””
Simone felt her stomach tighten.
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
Daniel looked at the documents around them.
“That’s why they needed your approval.””
Maya understood first.
“They weren’t trying to get the money.””
Daniel nodded.
“They were trying to replace the missing money.””
Simone stared at him.
“They needed Carter Meridian to cover the hole.””
“Yes.””
A terrible realization formed.
The Ashfords weren’t building a project.
They were hiding a collapse.
“How much is missing?””
Daniel looked away.
“More than three hundred million dollars.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Simone asked:
“Where did it go?””
Daniel’s expression changed.
Because that was the question he had been afraid of.
“I don’t know.””
“You signed the documents.””
“I know.””
“Then tell me.””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“Someone else moved the money.””
“Who?””
Before Daniel could answer, the archive door slammed shut.
Everyone turned.
A lock clicked.
They were trapped.
Marcus rushed toward the door.
“Locked from outside.””
Maya looked at Simone.
“Who did that?””
Daniel’s face went pale.
Not surprised.
Terrified.
“Oh no.””
Simone stared at him.
“What?””
Daniel looked toward the security camera in the corner of the archive.
“They know we found it.””
The camera light turned red.
A speaker crackled above them.
Then a voice filled the room.
A voice Simone recognized.
A voice that made Daniel close his eyes.
Because it belonged to the person they had all forgotten to fear.
“Dr. Carter,” the voice said.
“Since you’ve already uncovered the truth…”
A pause.
“And since my brother failed to stop you…”
Simone’s heart stopped.
The voice continued.
“Maybe it’s time you learned who actually owns the Ashford empire.””
Maya looked at Simone.
“Who is that?””
Simone stared at the speaker.
Because she knew that voice.
Everyone in the room knew that voice.
It was Victoria Ashford.
And she wasn’t crying.
May you like
She wasn’t afraid.
She was smiling.
