Chapter 2: The Name in the Files
The name on the document sat on Simone Carter’s screen like a warning.
She stared at it for several seconds, refusing to believe what she was seeing.
The office suite on the top floor of Carter Meridian Group was usually a place of control. Glass walls. Clean lines. A view of the city that reminded everyone who entered that decisions made here affected thousands of lives.
Tonight, it felt different.
The city lights outside looked distant.
Cold.
Maya stood across from Simone’s desk, watching her carefully.
“Simone,” she said softly.
“You know that person?””
Simone didn’t answer immediately.
She picked up the printed document from the table.
The paper shook slightly in her hand.
Not because she was afraid.
Because she was angry.
“I know him,” Simone finally said.
Maya stepped closer.
“Who is he?””
Simone placed the document down.
“Daniel Whitmore.””
Maya’s eyebrows lifted.
“The Ashford Foundation’s financial advisor?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
Simone looked at the screen again.
Daniel Whitmore’s signature appeared beneath a series of undisclosed transactions involving Ashford redevelopment funds.
Millions of dollars.
Transferred through shell companies.
Hidden from public donor reports.
Maya crossed her arms.
“Okay. He’s involved. But why does that surprise you?””
Simone leaned back in her chair.
“Because Daniel was my mentor.””
The room became silent.
Maya had heard countless stories about Simone’s career.
How she built Carter Meridian from a small investment firm into a global company.
How she spent years being underestimated.
How she learned finance from people who never expected her to sit at their table.
But she had never heard Simone mention Daniel Whitmore.
“Your mentor?”” Maya asked.
“When I was twenty-eight, he was one of the first people in this industry who took me seriously.””
Simone looked at the city below.
“He told me I didn’t need permission to belong in a room.””
Maya looked back at the document.
“And now he’s hiding money from you?””
Simone didn’t respond.
Because that was the part that hurt.
Not the cake.
Not Victoria.
Not the laughter.
Betrayal always came from someone who knew exactly where to place the knife.
A notification appeared on Simone’s laptop.
A video link.
The gala footage.
Someone had uploaded the moment Victoria smashed the cake into her face.
The headline was already spreading.
*ASHFORD GALA SHOCKER: CEO HUMILIATED DURING CHARITY EVENT*
Maya looked at the screen.
“They’re making you the story.””
Simone watched the video play silently.
Victoria’s voice echoed through the office.
“Money doesn’t buy class.””
Then came the laughter.
Hundreds of people.
Hundreds of witnesses.
And not one person had stopped her.
Simone closed the video.
“Good.””
Maya looked confused.
“Good?””
“Yes.””
“How is this good?””
“Because everyone is watching.””
Simone opened another file.
“The Ashfords wanted attention on me.””
She clicked through the financial records.
“They got it.””
Maya understood.
“They created a distraction.””
“Exactly.””
“And while everyone was recording the humiliation, nobody was checking the paperwork.””
Simone nodded.
“That was the plan.””
Maya walked around the desk.
“So what now?””
Simone looked at the clock.
11:17 p.m.
In less than ten hours, the investment committee would meet to approve the Ashford redevelopment package.
A $4.2 billion commitment.
A project that had been advertised as a major revitalization effort.
Affordable housing.
Commercial spaces.
Community investment.
A symbol of progress.
But behind the polished speeches were missing disclosures and hidden transactions.
Simone opened the funding agreement.
“They expected me to approve this tomorrow.””
Maya shook her head.
“They were confident.””
“They were.””
“Why?””
Simone scrolled through the documents.
Then she stopped.
Because suddenly something became clear.
“They knew exactly who would be in that room.””
Maya looked at her.
“What do you mean?””
“Look at the approval committee list.””
Maya leaned over.
Five names appeared.
Simone.
Two independent investors.
One community representative.
And Daniel Whitmore.
Maya’s expression changed.
“He was on the committee?””
“He recommended himself.””
“That’s a conflict.””
“Yes.””
Maya exhaled.
“So they needed your signature.””
Simone nodded.
“And they needed it before anyone looked deeper.””
A knock came from the office door.
Both women turned.
Simone’s security director, Marcus Reed, stepped inside.
“Sorry to interrupt.””
Marcus was a former military officer who rarely showed emotion.
Tonight, even he looked concerned.
“What happened?”” Simone asked.
He placed a tablet on her desk.
“You have a visitor.””
“At midnight?””
“He says it’s urgent.””
“Who?””
Marcus hesitated.
“Richard Ashford.””
Maya looked at Simone.
“The foundation chairman?””
Simone stared at the tablet.
Richard Ashford had spent the entire evening avoiding her.
Now he was at her office.
Interesting.
“Send him in,” Simone said.
A few minutes later, Richard entered.
The confidence he carried at the gala was gone.
His expensive suit was slightly wrinkled.
His face looked tired.
“Dr. Carter.””
Simone remained seated.
“Mr. Ashford.””
Richard glanced around the office.
“I assume you understand why I’m here.””
“I assume you’re here because you saw the funding freeze.””
His jaw tightened.
“Was that necessary?””
Simone looked at him.
“Was the cake necessary?””
Richard looked away.
“That was Victoria.””
“She acted in your ballroom.””
“She made a mistake.””
Simone smiled slightly.
“No. She made a choice.””
Richard ignored the comment.
“You are damaging a project that benefits thousands of people.””
Simone folded her hands.
“I’m protecting thousands of people from something you failed to disclose.””
His expression changed.
A small reaction.
But enough.
Simone noticed.
“You know.””
Richard’s eyes narrowed.
“Know what?””
“You know about the transactions.””
Silence.
Richard walked toward the window.
“Daniel assured us everything was handled.””
Simone felt something inside her shift.
“You trusted him?””
“He has managed our finances for fifteen years.””
“That doesn’t answer my question.””
Richard turned around.
“Dr. Carter, you don’t understand how complicated this situation is.””
“Then explain it.””
“I can’t.””
“Because you don’t know?””
“Because if certain information becomes public, people will lose everything.””
Simone stood.
“People already lost something tonight.””
Richard looked at her.
“What?””
“Trust.””
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Richard lowered his voice.
“Victoria shouldn’t have done what she did.””
Simone waited.
“But?””
Richard sighed.
“But there are powerful people involved in this project.””
“Who?””
He looked toward the door.
As if he was afraid someone might hear.
“People who don’t forgive easily.””
Simone stared at him.
“Is that a threat?””
“No.””
“It sounds like one.””
Richard shook his head.
“I’m warning you.””
“About what?””
He stepped closer.
“Some doors are closed for a reason.””
Simone almost laughed.
“You invited me to open this door.””
Richard’s face hardened.
“No. We invited you to fund it.””
The words hung between them.
There it was.
The truth beneath the charity speeches.
They didn’t want her partnership.
They wanted her money.
They wanted her signature.
They wanted her reputation attached to their project.
Simone walked back to her desk.
“You should leave.””
Richard paused.
“Dr. Carter—”
“No.””
Her voice was firm.
“You came here hoping I would be emotional. Angry. Afraid.””
She picked up the document with Daniel’s signature.
“But you made one mistake.””
Richard looked at her.
“What mistake?””
“You assumed humiliation would make me smaller.””
Richard said nothing.
Simone looked him directly in the eyes.
“It made me pay attention.””
After Richard left, Maya waited until the door closed.
“He knows more than he admitted.””
“Yes.””
“Do you think he’s involved?””
Simone looked at the security camera footage from the gala.
She watched Richard sitting at the trustee table.
Watching.
Silent.
While Victoria walked toward her.
“I don’t know yet.””
Maya frowned.
“But?””
Simone pointed at the screen.
“Pause.””
Maya stopped the footage.
Simone zoomed in.
On the far side of the ballroom, behind the guests, stood another person.
Someone who had not laughed.
Someone who had not recorded.
Someone who had been watching Victoria before the incident happened.
“Who is that?”” Maya asked.
Simone leaned closer.
The image was blurry.
But the face was familiar.
Very familiar.
Her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
“Dr. Carter speaking.””
For several seconds, nobody said anything.
Then a woman’s voice whispered:
“You need to stop looking into Ashford.””
Simone stood still.
“Who is this?””
“You don’t understand what you found.””
“Then explain it.””
A shaky breath.
“I tried to warn them.””
“Warn who?””
The woman’s voice dropped lower.
“The people who knew the truth.””
Simone looked at Maya.
“Who are you?””
A pause.
Then the woman answered:
“My name is Olivia Whitmore.””
Simone’s hand tightened around the phone.
Whitmore.
Daniel’s last name.
The woman continued.
“And I know why they chose you.””
Simone’s heartbeat slowed.
“Why?””
The line went silent.
Then Olivia said six words that changed everything.
“Because you weren’t the target.””
The call disconnected.
Simone stared at the dark screen.
Maya looked at her.
“What did she mean?””
Simone didn’t answer.
Because on her laptop, the gala footage continued playing.
And now she noticed something she had missed before.
Victoria had not walked toward her randomly.
Someone had pointed her in Simone’s direction.
Someone standing behind the Ashford family crest.
Someone whose face was finally becoming clear.
And Simone recognized him instantly.
May you like
Because he was the one person she never expected to see at the center of the betrayal.
Her own brother.
