Chapter 5: The Secret Nathan Kept From Me
I read the sentence three times.
Then a fourth.
Because my brain refused to accept it.
Vanessa believed she had a claim to my house.
I looked at Nathan.
“What is this?””
He didn’t answer.
That was worse than anything.
“Nathan.””
He sat down.
“Emily, listen.””
“No.””
My voice was calm.
Too calm.
“I’ve spent twelve years listening.””
He looked at the papers.
“She thinks she’s protecting the family.””
I stared at him.
“You sound like you believe her.””
“I don’t.””
“But you’re defending her.””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because he knew.
The truth was sitting between us.
I had spent years defending Nathan from his family.
But nobody had ever defended me from them.
I picked up the documents.
“How long have you known?””
He looked down.
“Known what?””
I laughed.
“Don’t insult me.””
Silence.
“How long have you known Vanessa was looking into my house?””
Nathan finally spoke.
“A few months.””
A few months.
I felt something break inside me.
“You knew?””
“She told me she was just trying to understand things.””
“And you said nothing?””
“I didn’t think it would become serious.””
I stepped back.
“You didn’t think it was serious that your sister was investigating my property?””
He rubbed his face.
“I was trying to avoid conflict.””
I nodded slowly.
There it was.
His favorite excuse.
Avoid conflict.
Meaning:
Let Emily handle the pain.
Let Emily absorb the disrespect.
Let Emily forgive everyone.
I walked upstairs and opened our bedroom closet.
I found another surprise.
A small box.
Hidden behind Nathan’s clothes.
Inside were papers.
More papers.
Bank statements.
Copies of documents.
And one envelope.
I recognized the handwriting.
Vanessa.
I opened it.
The letter was short.
“Nathan, we need to make sure Emily understands that family assets should remain with family.””
Family assets.
My home.
My work.
My sacrifice.
They had turned my life into an asset.
I walked downstairs holding the letter.
Nathan saw my face.
“What happened?””
I placed it on the table.
“Read it.””
He did.
His expression changed.
For the first time, I saw fear.
Not guilt.
Fear.
Because maybe he finally understood how far this had gone.
“I didn’t know about this.””
I looked at him.
“But you knew enough.””
He sat down.
“Emily…”
“No.””
I grabbed my bag.
“I need to leave.””
“Where will you go?””
I looked at him.
The question was supposed to hurt me.
Instead, it made me stronger.
“Somewhere I’m respected.””
I walked toward the door.
Then Nathan said something behind me.
Something that made me stop.
“Emily.””
I turned.
His face was pale.
“There’s something else.””
I waited.
He swallowed.
“The reason Vanessa thinks she can challenge the house…”
My hand tightened around the door handle.
“What reason?””
He looked away.
Then quietly said:
“Because years ago, my father put something in writing.””
I stared.
“What?””
Nathan’s voice dropped.
“He left a document.””
“What kind of document?””
He looked at me.
“A document that says if our marriage ends…”
The silence was unbearable.
“…the house may not belong to you anymore.””
I felt the room tilt.
Because I had spent twelve years believing I was building a life.
But while I was building walls, memories, and a family…
Someone else had been planning how to take it all away.
And the worst part?
Nathan had known about the document.
May you like
He had known for years.
And he never told me.
